Dan Rather on Reddit: No one proved that Bush documents were forged
Rather responded brusquely:
Number 1 – the facts of case are not in dispute.
Number 2 – no one had ever established that the documents were forged (those who attack them argued that we didn’t do enough to demonstrate that they were not forged) The whole documents argument was a camouflage – what was described in the documents was factual. As for the trap argument — could have been, might have been but nobody has ever proven that. What I know, all I know, is we reported a true story. Whatever you think of the documents, facts are facts.

Give it up, Dan. You’re finished, and your reputations sucks.

My only question is how did Dan Rather find his way onto Reddit to begin with?
BigGator5 on February 8, 2013 at 3:12 PM
He asked his own source: “why did you deceive us?” about those very documents. What a tool.
and lol @ Charles Johnson who now has to disown his own work to side with Rather (if he’s still even around).
Daemonocracy on February 8, 2013 at 3:12 PM
Fake but accurate!
/And THAT’S the WAY it WAS
Paul-Cincy on February 8, 2013 at 3:13 PM
Actually, they were proved to be MS Word documents, which wasn’t around at the time. Didn’t our own AllahPundit play a hand in that?
rbj on February 8, 2013 at 3:13 PM
“no one had ever established that the documents were forged”
Using Dan Rather’s logic, no one has ever established that anything Dan Rather said is true, either.
Ira on February 8, 2013 at 3:14 PM
Journalistic excellence: taking documents from a known partisan and having experts authenticate not those documents, but faxed copies of the photocopies the partisan made of the original documents prior to burning them.
CBS should have settled with Rather and paid him by photocopying $100 bills and faxing them to him.

I believe AP and Charles Johnson did most of the work. It’s a real shame what happened to Johnson. LGF was one of the first blogs I read and now he seems to have gone completely insane.

The superimposition of the original document over one composed in Word was one of the great “gotcha” images of our time. A picture is worth a thousand words. And trumps the credibility of the million words Dan Rather spoke on CBS over the years.
Paul-Cincy on February 8, 2013 at 3:19 PM
Dude! You can sit down with MS Word at the default settings and reproduce the “documents” exactly. Case closed!
claudius on February 8, 2013 at 3:20 PM
They’ll use the same font on his tombstone.

Christien on February 8, 2013 at 3:20 PM
Then why did Rather get fired? Why was Mapes let go? Why did they have to apologize on the air about the inaccuracy of the story? Just give it up, Dan. You tried to bring down an incumbent President right before an election and got burned. And you’ll go to the grave with this as your legacy.
Doughboy on February 8, 2013 at 3:20 PM
Sounds as if Dan is calling out Allahpundit…?
d1carter on February 8, 2013 at 3:25 PM
No one has established that the allegation the documents were fake is false. That’s a fact.
Facts are facts, so there!
Dusty on February 8, 2013 at 3:27 PM
The facts in the documents are true?
Why then, is there nothing other than the documents to prove those “facts”. If the facts are “true” (that Bush was AWOL, etc.), you would have other evidence – other documents, witness testimony – supporting the “facts”.
In this case, they had no witnesses or other documents stating that Bush was ever AWOL. the only thing supporting that “fact” were the fake documents.
Rather is absurd.

It’s sad what happened to LGF. Charles never claimed to be a conservative, but he had the intellectual honesty to put a smackdown on CBS’s “fake but accurate” story and documents.

The guys on PAWN STARS do a lot more “fact checking” whenever someone brings them a “Rock-Em-Sock-Em Robot” game to buy than Dan Rather does on ANY of his stories.
HondaV65 on February 8, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Yep. It started with putting up pro-evolution and anti-creation threads, pitting commenters against each other, and knocking people for criticizing Obama, and went downhill from there. I have to give him credit, though, for cracking on the idiot nirthers like the kooks at WND.
Ward Cleaver on February 8, 2013 at 3:35 PM
The problem they always had with that defense is that there is no other evidence aside from the fake documents supporting the accuracy of the AWOL charge. There were rumors of it for years on lefty web-sites (which shows where Rather and 60 minutes get their news from), but never any evidence. The whole reason that the documents were so important was that it was allegedly proof of the rumors.
Basically, what Rather is arguing is that the rumors are true because he says so. He is an idiot. All the newsreaders are idiots.

Some Air National Guard unit was not going to own typewriters fancy enough to do things like superscript and kerned Times New Roman-style fonts.
If the forger had enough of that elusive element Clue to change the font to Courier, it might have turned out differently. Might. Because superscript and kerning were harder to argue than a font typewriters of the period didn’t tend to use.

Now, to be fair, Rock’em Sock’em Robots is actually worth quite a bit of money.
Unlike anything Dan Rather produces…

Sadly, Charles Johnson has totally flipped out since 2004 when he exposing that the documents had been forged. He and Dan Rather need to placed in padded cells.

The forger needed to use a typewriter instead of MS Word. I don’t think MS Word can produce anything that will look like the output of a 1970s typewriter.

The years have not been kind to old Dan; worst case of Alzheimer I can recall that could still string words together.
michaelo on February 8, 2013 at 4:15 PM
More likely he’s saying it’s true because it would have produced the “right” results, i.e. President Kerry.
Rather thinks you should believe him instead of your lying eyes, his ego is that big.

… and that’s why I resigned in shame and and why I am spending my final years a bitter and broken man. – Lying Lib Rather
Pork-Chop on February 8, 2013 at 4:28 PM
It’s rather (
) comical we HotGas posters are working so hard to understand the motivation behind and substance of such a blatant lie and crime. It’s like considering someone who robbed a convenience store — he hit the clerk over the head, took $50 from the cash register, and some cartons of cigarettes. Well, he needed the money to buy drugs, and he smoked some of the cigarettes, and sold others. No. He committed a crime, he goes through the system, is found guilty, and pays. There’s no more to it than that. It’s nothing more than it appears to be. But in this case it’s Dan Rather, so people talk about it.
Paul-Cincy on February 8, 2013 at 4:34 PM
And don’t forget that Power Line also played a role.
Del Dolemonte on February 8, 2013 at 4:47 PM
One of the commenters at the linked article correctly notes that if Sean Hannity had tried to pull something like this he would be drummed out of TV.
Rather, on the other hand, was given awards by his “journalistic peers” for his malpractice.
