“Scouting is about teaching a substantial amount of life lessons. Sexuality is not one of them.”
Perry, a Republican and former presidential candidate, told a statewide gathering of scouts that such a change is not appropriate.
“Scouting is about teaching a substantial amount of life lessons,” he said. “Sexuality is not one of them. It never has been; it doesn’t need to be.”
The Dallas Morning News said he told reporters after the event, “I think most people see absolutely no reason to change the position and neither do I.”…
Perry is a former Eagle Scout and wrote the book “On My Honor: Why the American Values of the Boy Scouts Are Worth Fighting For.” His publisher says the book “explains the Scouts refusal to bend to the winds of political correctness by allowing activist homosexual scoutmasters” and addresses other scouting topics.

Oh dear, I would imagine Perry plowed up a snake with these comments? At least he said how he feels and one might imagine millions of American’s on the change of the boy scouts?
Thanks Perry for standing up for what you believe. Our home agrees with you.

But, if we don’t keep gays out of the Boy Scouts, then the terrorists have already won . . .

Don’t kick gays out is now equal to teach sexuality?!
It’s a retarded argument, which is fitting one as it’s made by a conservative.

You know, it’s great to be open minded and inclusive but is there any indication that our world was a bad place before we became so absorbed in our sex lives and especially the sex lives of others. I think our priority life equations have become off balance.

What differences are there with these folks other than their sexuality? And why would it ever need to come up in the first place? Because, they think think it is some kind of civil rights problem that people not only know but embrace. We are having the wrong argument.
Cindy Munford on February 3, 2013 at 3:59 PM
Damn well said, Governor Perry! I wish someone would tell that to public school teachers also.
Stoic Patriot on February 3, 2013 at 3:59 PM
No, not quite. If we are “open and affirming” of homosexuals in the Boy Scouts, then it negates the “morally straight” teachings of the organization, and it’s another notch in the belt of the glorifiers of sin, who are forcing morality, i.e. “right and wrong” into the scrap heap of American history.
Obviously, you’re in favor of that outcome. I, and many like me, are not.

It’s a parental duty, and not the business of the BSA.

This is a keeper. I am sure this will come back to haunt Mo.

But that’s irrelevant. Nobody’s telling BSA to teach about sexuality. Only Perry imagined that. BSA is being asked not to kick people out because they are gay.
lester on February 3, 2013 at 4:12 PM
I cannot believe you made such an insensitive statement about those who are mentally disabled. Mental disabilities are nothing to laugh or joke around about. I don’t care what point you are trying to make. If a conservative would have used the word “retarded”, you would have had a nuclear meltdown.

Is a young man’s sexuality on a questionnaire? How does anyone know who is gay? I believe SCOTUS has determined they have freedom of association.
Cindy Munford on February 3, 2013 at 4:17 PM
Calling an argument retarded is not insensitive to anyone. The closest you can come to that is assuming Perry is retarded, in the sense that he is actually mentally disabled. Gotta admit that is in fact a possibility.
Are you Sarah Palin or something? I remember she flipped out when Biden called something retarded. That’s until Rush Limbaugh used the same term and the Alaskan quitter came out and said it’s A-Okay for Rush Limbaugh to call people retard because he’s super-awesome.

reddevil on February 3, 2013 at 4:32 PM
Policy is to kick them out if you find out. Are you really implying the only way to find out about someone’s sexual orientation is through a question on a form?
You either want gays “sent back to closets where they belong” or are too sheltered from real world.
lester on February 3, 2013 at 4:35 PM
There’s nothing wrong with being gay. There’s something wrong with being a drug dealer. Understanding that basic point should be pretty simple.

Lester, you’re wanted in the Menendez thread.
How was Mass this morning?
CurtZHP on February 3, 2013 at 4:47 PM
There’s a game with gay rights, or at least two different perspectives. Liberals say it’s about who you are, conservatives say it’s about what you do. So according to liberals, rules excluding gays is the same as “not accepting who they are”. While conservatives say it doesn’t matter who you are, this is about behavior.
So the liberals say conservatives are haters because they don’t accept gays for who they are, while conservatives say liberals are brain dead because they don’t understand we can never know who someone is, we can only see behavior, and the sanctions are against homosexual behavior, not orientation.
I don’t think it’s right to teach boys that male/male sex is a good standard of behavior. It’s not about “accepting” homosexuals for “who they are”. It’s about molding the character of boys.
Paul-Cincy on February 3, 2013 at 4:49 PM
What makes you a drug dealer? Dealing drugs. What makes you a gay male? That you express love via sodomy. It’s not about “being”, it’s about “doing”.

Ghay’s want access to little boys outside the influence of their parents. Truly it is that evil and that simple.

Why should a gay kid be kicked out?
I tell you why. Because Jesus would have it that way. And the 2012 bust not withstanding, Jesus is gonna come back and whip your gay-lovin’ asses. Real soon, ya hear? Maybe this year. Maybe 2014. 2015 at the latest.
There really are three Americas at this point. The socialist progressive nuts, the religious social con nuts, and the rest of America.
Fortunately, history shows that every age has nuts, but just as in nature, the nuts always fall by the wayside.

Are you talking to yourself?
Paul-Cincy on February 3, 2013 at 5:08 PM
I understand how this comes up in adult conversations and may be more relevant if we were talking about Scout Leaders but I would venture to say that the vast majority of these boys are not sexually active in the first place. I might be very naive about the conversations that take place during scout outings but I don’t picture it being about hot babes and how to score. I’m suggesting that scouts might be a great place for young men to be focused on a larger goal than whether or not they fit into some particular mold. You think I want them in the closet, I say they need a respite and I am talking about the heterosexual young men also. Our culture is far to engrossed in sexuality of all kinds.
Cindy Munford on February 3, 2013 at 5:09 PM
No I don’t think that Jesus would kick a young man out of the Scouts and it’s a lead pipe cinch he would handle the situation better than any of us could. No one wants to reject a kid for anything, I would suggest to you that bullying people and belittling their faith is a terrible tactic to achieve your goal. Unless like Obama, your goal is too separate and ridicule people for whatever differences don’t fall in to his or your accepting loving ideals.

Can you name me one organization throughout not only the 200+ years of American history, but lets say 2000 years of world history, that has not fallen by the wayside while entire empires have risen and fallen?

By the way, gays will never run to court to require that churches perform wedding ceremonies and employ practicing homosexuals.

tom daschle concerned on February 3, 2013 at 6:13 PM
First off, no one is saying “kick the gays out,” or “don’t kick the gays out.”
It’s about letting the activist openly gays in, in positions of leadership. And that IS about sexuality.
So you, sir, are the one exhibiting a less than coherent level of intelligence regarding the question.
jaydee_007 on February 3, 2013 at 8:32 PM
Yes, it is. Perry is either being dishonest or he is a moron by putting forward this ridiculous strawman.
How depressing to see so many commenters here make excuses for kicking out gay scouts. The policy is idiotic and bigoted. It is immoral to kick out scouts because of their sexual orientation, and that is a fact!
It is a conservative value to judge an individual by the content of their character, not to prejudge them as part of some identity group. There is nothing wrong with being gay, people!
You all need to grow up. Seeing the ugly, bigoted smears like “gays are out for your children” on this site makes me embarrassed for HotAir. Some of you sound as bad as the Muslims on Arabic language Al Jazeera when they demonize Jews and try to justify treating them like second class citizens and portray them as dangerous, sickening beings.

You are wrong. The Boy Scouts do, in fact, kick out gay scouts. This ban is likely going to be dropped, and that makes the bigots here mad.
