[1] The bottom-barrel ports are directly underneath the top ones. And no, the ports look to be (IMO) about 45° off the vertical axis of the barrel (basically at right-angles off the center line).

[2] Those are propellant gases… if I had to guess, they had the photo guy do an ‘auto-fire’ on the shutter as he pulled the trigger… please note they went out of their way to post a photo of the weapon discharging.

Too bad they have anybody about to tell the TOTUS raise the barrels a little more cause I can’t imagine what’s he shooting at…

IF he just pulled the trigger (which if looks like he hasn’t yet)his cheek wouldn’t be comfortably pressed against the butt and his shoulder would be jammed back.

Not “all of the time,” which was the most laughable part of his original statement. So laughable, in fact, that even the CNN White House correspondent, Jessica Yellin, incredulously asked The Spokeskid about it.

Obama uses Camp David less than any other President and skeet shooting isn’t something high on the list of usual daily activities in Martha’s Vineyard or Hawaii. At most, according to the WH reporter at the WaPo, who studies the President’s diary, he’s done it twice.

“All of the time” = Twice

“A middle class family will see their health insurance premiums DECREASE by 3,000%” = “The cheapest policy under Obamacare will cost $20,000″

I’m assuming that there is a prominent military charity that they can find that would want to be involved with it. The thing is that Obama is just so thin skinned that he couldn’t laugh off what was an obvious bald-faced pander and turn it around into something positive like that.. Clinton, Reagan, Bush all could.

I did an error level analysis on the photo, and the smoke (nor anything else) does appear to NOT be photoshopped in…. But there is no evidence of recoil in his posture, so I’m betting it was a blank.

I found the original uploaded image on flikr (not the actual original image, unfortunately and all exif data has been erased.

Unlike the previous picture in the photostream which has the full exif data embedded.

And note their scare warning…

This official White House photograph is being made available only for publication by news organizations and/or for personal use printing by the subject(s) of the photograph. The photograph may not be manipulated in any way and may not be used in commercial or political materials,

Which, if the photo was done by a government employee, or on government property, they can’t legally enforce. That photo is OURS to do with as we please.

If you look carefully you can see where they photoshopped away the red flag which says BANG hanging out of the barrel.

Oh yeah, the shotgun sure looks like an ACME Model Wile E. to me.

Snark aside, the question is not whether Obama has ever shot a high-end shotgun of a style often used for skeet shooting, but whether he has actually shot skeet and whether he does it “all the time” as claimed. This photograph addresses neither of those questions.

Not shooting skeet, that’s for sure. Shooting targets would, and particularly so if the targets were pictures of Mitt Romney.

No wait, Obama loves to go skeet shooting after Kim Rhodes sets a record for gold medals by winning a gold medal in skeet shooting and he gets to talk about it that day in his weekly radio address along with the fact that he’s jealous that Michelle got to go to the Olympics and he couldn’t.

I hate to be a tin foil hatter, but anybody who’s watched or participated in skeet shooting knows that it’s pretty rare to wait until the clay is at eye level to shoot at it, at that point it’s almost on the ground, which is what the picture here suggests. So yeah, either it was staged or Obama just isn’t very good at skeet, one is just as likely as the other.

I’m pretty sure that’s not the wad. I think what folks are seeing is what appears to be a brass choke in the muzzle. (Which corresponds to the Browning Cynergy someone pointed out earlier.) If there is something else there I can’t see it.

I don’t shoot shotguns but is it wise to rest your cheek on the butt of a gun like that? Especially a shotgun?

When shooting rifles and shotguns the cheek is placed firmly on the comb of the stock in what is called a “cheek weld”. If you don’t do it, you can’t align your eye with the sights properly, and it hurts a lot when the gun smacks you.
Obama is not aiming this shotgun. He’s simply firing a shot for a publicity pic.
His head is tilted forward and his eye is below the plane of the barrel rib.
You don’t aim a shotgun the way you do a rifle. With a shotgun the eye is actually the rear sight. To place the “rear sight” correctly the head is held erect and the gun is mounted to the shoulder and a cheek weld is obtained. This places the eye above the plane of the barrel.
The way Barry is holding that shotgun if it was actually a full power shell it hurt when he pulled the trigger.
I’m skeptical that it was full power because, first, it’s odd that smoke only came from the ports on the right side of the barrel. I’ve never seen that in all the ported shotguns I’ve seen fired.
Second, there is no indication of recoil in his body. With a pic taken at the instant of firing the recoil should be obvious.
I’m not sure what’s sticking out of the end of the top barrel, unless it’s an extended choke tube.

In a recent interview with The New Republic magazine, Obama said “yes” when asked if he has ever fired a gun. He said “we do skeet shooting all the time,” except for his daughters, at Camp David, the presidential retreat in Maryland.

The White House photo released Saturday is dated Aug. 4, 2012, and shows Obama shooting at clay targets on the range at Camp David.

Hmm, interesting…. Despite my earlier ELC analysis showing no significant evidence of photoshgopping, I enlarged the photo and there are indeed ports on the side of the barrel facing the camera. Yet no smoke from them. Weird. I guess whoever ‘shopped’ the photo for him is really good at the job .

(Unfortunately for them, whoever set that photo up has no experience in shooting, and I still have no doubt that he is shootin’ blanks.

And indeed that thing on the end of the top muzzle is a brass choke tube extended beyond the muzzle.
