I had to look it up, but you’re right. Faso defeated Weld at the State Convention.

I’m pretty sure he still lives in New York, where he lost the 2006 gubernatorial race to Spitzer?

The Republican candidate in 2006 was John Faso, who was defeated by Spitzer. I believe Weld lives in NY, but maintains property in Mass and could switch residencey if he chose to. I suspect he will not. Other names being mentioned (per the NY Times) are:

Gabriel Gomez, a businessman and a former member of the Navy SEALs, and State Representative Daniel Winslow, a former district court judge who served in the administration of Mitt Romney. Another possible candidate is former Lt. Gov. Kerry Healey, who served as Mr. Romney’s No. 2 and who was deferring to Mr. Brown before making a decision.

Since when is a Republican losing by 1% of the vote in MA during a presidential election year getting smoked. I’d like to see him run, I love Bielat but he’s too conservative for MA. No way is Romney going to run, and if he were to run, no way is he going to win. Tisei is our best bet, plus the national GOP gets tons of media cred for nominating, and hopefully electing, a Gay guy statewide.
