Chris Christie and 2016
He is potentially the un-Romney of Republican presidential politics, the candidate who connects viscerally, sometimes perhaps too much so, with voters. Although he campaigned hard for Mitt Romney in 2012 and was one of the first governors to endorse him, Christie told Oprah in 2011 that Romney doesn’t connect with people. No one knows how the Republican nominating electorate of 2016 will feel about the idea of selecting a second consecutive Eastern governor from a blue state. “The presidency,” Christie says, “is the most personal vote people cast,” and he distills into two words the lesson of 2012: “Candidates matter.” …
He heartily agrees with the axiom that the most “likable” candidate usually wins presidential elections, and he understands that combativeness that might serve a governor might be inappropriate for a president, whom people want cloaked in a particular dignity, and who is in everyone’s living room every night. Christie says, “The image of me nationally is a little skewed.” What he calls his “yelling and screaming” is very limited and always tactical. He thinks even voters choosing a president “want someone who has that club in his golf bag.” …
By 2015, the Republican nominating electorate will have forgotten Christie’s effusive praise of Obama’s post-Sandy solicitousness toward New Jersey. And Christie will be the rambunctious fellow who before Sandy described Obama as “a man walking around in a dark room looking for the light switch of leadership.”

Yet if memory serves, Mr. Will, you were saying that Romney was a “serious candidate” and you spent a bunch of time pushing him as the best of the GOP.
So by inference, is Chris Christie a terrible candidate and a joke? If so, this may be the first time in a long time that I’ve agreed with you.

Well, Will was actually a Pawlenty and Mitch Daniels guy. I might add he was not very keen on Reagan before Reagan won:
While acknowledging that several potential candidates are flawed, in response, Jonah Goldberg made the case that we should let the voters decide. I agree.
And isn’t that what primaries are for? Let the voters use their own winnowing forks. It’s not like the GOP has a history of nominating irresponsible firebrands. And the two nominees who were so labeled by the political establishment — Barry Goldwater and Ronald Reagan — are the soul of the GOP today, for “tea partyers” and establishmentarians alike.
So, where was George Will on Ronald Reagan prior to his nomination? On September 16, 1979, Will was using his column to highlight what a risk Reagan was due to his age, speculating that, were Kennedy to beat Carter in the Democrat primary, everyone would, or should, turn to a younger, more vibrant candidate.
The screen cap below is from Will’s column, “Reagan’s The One” on Nov. 3, 1980, a day before the 1980 election. If we had taken George Will’s advice in 1979 and 1980, there would have been no Reagan Revolution. I don’t mean to attack him. But it’s a fact.
ddrintn on January 31, 2013 at 9:45 PM
Heck, if the GOP puts up the fight in 2016 that it did in 2012, that guy from Maryland could win. Whatshisname.

I dont know if she’ll run. Besides, I dont think people, especially party insiders would support Christie over Rubio.

Ummm… This is why I seriously think that you are a troll. The fact that you’re amused by Rick Santorum being the nominee and the Republicans losing the general election by 20 points to Hillary and losing the House as well.

Don’t worry. An ex-politician who couldn’t be elected to their previous position if they were running against an orange juice can is waiting in the wings and ready to do battle with the Republican insiders and the crony capitalists and is expert at playing the “will I? won’t I?” act.
Why yes, of course I mean the rogue Joe Scarborough.

Lord, please deliver us from these RINOs and squishes!
Yes, George, candidates matter. Presidential candidates need to be expert retail politicians who connect with people on a personal level. But it counts for jack all if the candidate doesn’t have the conservative street cred to back it up. He’s the un-Romney? No, he’s just Romney with a pulse and a temper. Not a lot separating these two philosophically. If you tools foist him on us like you did with Mittens, the outcome is going to be identical. The man is a squish! If it looks like a squish, and walks like a squish, and talks like a squish — it’s a squish! And we don’t want any more!
NoLeftTurn on January 31, 2013 at 11:34 PM
That’s only 2 years away, George. Trust me, I will not have forgotten.
Doughboy on January 31, 2013 at 11:39 PM
See folks there is things worse than Rubio, Paul, Ryan, etc. You might not agree with them on one or two things they have done, but Christie has racked up a list of infractions unlike any other.
(1) He help Obama win the presidency (or at least tried to)
(2) He is for more gun control than any other GOP pick in 2016
(3) Openly attacked the NRA
(4) Demanded Boehner pass a pork bill at once or be eaten alive
(5) Appointed an Muslim Judge who supported Sharia law
(6) Said that being in this country illegally is not a crime
(7) Wants to be Bruce Springsteen
(8) Always goes on NBC and MSNBC to trash other Republicans
(9) And in general acts like a jerk when he does not get his way
He is basically going to be the RINO Lord of 2016 and conservatives better rally behind someone smooth enough to win, even if he has a few infractions in your mind. I fear conservatives will split themselves over one issue or another thus dividing themselves between different candidates and all the RINOs will rally to Christie Rex giving him the win.

Dole, McCain, Romney, W. to a slightly lesser extent… I can’t do it again. I just can’t. No Christie. Absolutely not. I won’t stay home but I’ll vote third party.
deepdiver on February 1, 2013 at 12:02 AM
If Christie is the nominee, I will unregister as a Republican and vote against every single Republican on the ticket (unless Rand Paul or Ted Cruz is on there). Then, I will resolve to never vote for another Republican again. I may not be able to keep that resolution, but I’ll try.
