Amnesty and the welfare state
It is absolutely stupefying that so many libertarians have no problem with granting citizenship to so many illegals who would be eligible for transfer programs. To ignore this as a fiscal issue is to ignore reality. In 2007, Robert Rector estimated that the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill would cost roughly $2.6 trillion. Remember that was before the gutting of welfare reform and the massive eligibility expansions under Obama.
During his charm offensive on talk radio, Rubio assured conservatives that under his plan the amnestied immigrants would not be eligible for welfare (except for Obamacare, a provision he says is concerning). However, that is only during the probationary period. All of them would then be eligible for a green card and citizenship (if they pay a fine and buy an English textbook, as if the executive will even enforce that), at which point they could receive welfare.
This is also something we need to keep in mind regarding any proposal to grant them a permanent legal resident status without any path to citizenship. I’m open to suggestions, but it’s hard to imagine how we could legally and politically firewall welfare benefits from such a large group that is granted permanent residence. Temporary migrant worker visas are one thing, but an entire constituency of PLRs with a massive legal advocacy arm is quite another.

Congressman Lamar Smith for the great state of Texas:
“When you legalize those who are in the country illegally, it costs taxpayers millions of dollars, costs American workers thousands of jobs and encourages more illegal immigration,” Smith said in a brief statement. “By granting amnesty, the Senate proposal actually compounds the problem by encouraging more illegal immigration.”

Well Danny and all you poor ignorant mouf-breathing Conservatives don’t realize that we Libertarians will REPEAL the Welfare State! It’s all so simple….
Now if ONLY one of us could get elected POTUS…and by “one of us” I mean, 269 of us…so we could repeal the Welfare State, but still it’s all so simple…
It’s why we favour drug legalization, because we are going to repeal the Welfare State….
But you old Stick-in-the-mud Conservatives just keep right on pointing out that we haven’t repealed the Welfare State, dtails, details….

Libertarians are not liberty loving. What they are is consequence free idiots on average. Sure, there are some with brains, but they are the minority.

Certainly making me feel like I should get one of my in-laws over here illegally so they can transition to legal. Why not? What the government is telling me is that it is not in fact illegal, that it is in fact legal.

It would honestly be evil not to expand welfare and all these “safety net” programs if you pass amnesty because you would be creating a massive poverty class that is competing for a shrinking number of jobs in an importer society. They would have to live like slaves, albeit voluntary slaves, and undercut each other’s labor value for the pennies that the upper classes would offer them. They would literally be agreeing to work for food and shelter, just like slaves did.

Welfare State of open borders.
Pick one, you can’t have both.
We have a better count of Mexican Beer coming across the border than we do of people.
