Advice to Republicans on how not to talk about immigration
The talking points address a number of fundamental questions lawmakers may face. “When engaging in conversation or doing an interview on immigration reform” lawmakers “Do acknowledge that ‘Our current immigration system is broken and we need to fix it,’” but “Don’t begin with ‘We are against amnesty.’”
Similarly, when discussing undocumented workers living in the United States, HLN advises members, “Do use ‘undocumented immigrant’ when referring to those here without documentation,” but “Don’t use the word ‘illegals’ or ‘aliens,’” and “Don’t use the term ‘anchor baby.’”
Strikingly, HLN also recommends lawmakers not reference Ronald Reagan’s immigration reform law, pointing out that “That legislation was true amnesty; in addition, border security, fixing our visa system, and a temporary worker program were parts of the reform which were never implemented.”

Did they add how to vote too?

I’m sure Ben Smith and BuzzFeed are heartfelt in their concern that Republicans discuss immigration “correctly.”

Try to inject the word Latino whenever possible and never mention the words illegal or alien.

I think GOProud put out something similar for gay marriage. In that they suggested never using gay marriage at all but instead saying “really, lovey dovey marriage”.

In other words…
“Sit down and shut up you rascist pigs.”

BTW, these talking points are from a “Latino Conservative Group”.

The Dems want new revenue, I have a proposal for them, a ten percent payroll tax on employers of H-1b visa holders and any ‘guest workers’ allowed in the comprehensive immigration reform.

LOL. Just skip the foreplay and say, “I do not like the concept of the nation-state and think it should be destroyed … for the children!”

I listen to BuzzFeed specifically for their advice to Republicans/conservatives.
Jeddite on January 29, 2013 at 4:15 PM
It’s a Latino Conservative Group just ask Jeb Bush who chairs it.
Jeb Bush chairs the Hispanic Leadership Network, an ongoing effort by the American Action Network and the American Action Forum to provide a platform for the Hispanic community to connect with center-right policies and leaders.
How do you say Astro Turf in Spanish?

No, no they aren’t. They might be Republican, but they are in no way “conservative”.
Spot on!

The term “illegal alien” is a legal term used in courts, by the IRS, and in federal government law. It’s an appropriate term to use. If the words are officially banished from the law and from the IRS, then we can use something else. But they’re not.
Until then, not using appropriate legal terms because they offend the emotionally-challenged, well, that’s just Politically Correct claptrap.
visions on January 29, 2013 at 4:43 PM
First and last, they’re illegal immigrants. In a country that prides itself on respect for the rule of law, I find it inconceivable that we’re not insisting that these lawbreakers pay some serious consequences.
That said, the term alien seems inaccurate and antiquated.
Also, we need a different term for anchor babies. How about non-native children?
Finally, the term undocumented immigrant should be ridiculed for the laughable euphemism that it is. Get serious. It’s not as if their illegal status is the result of bureaucratic redtape or a paperwork snafu occurring the the HR department.
BuckeyeSam on January 29, 2013 at 4:50 PM
No, the terms are “illegal alien” and “anchor baby.” They are the best terms to describe what those things are. And “illegal alien” is even the official legal term used by the government.
Shump on January 29, 2013 at 5:01 PM
If we cannot talk about illegal immigrants, than we cannot have a debate about immigration.
El_Terrible on January 29, 2013 at 5:01 PM
Why would they? It’s not like the issue will even be mentioned in whatever legislation they come up with.
xblade on January 29, 2013 at 5:05 PM
So let’s see… the “strategists” are now saying that we should support…
- Gay marriage
- Drug legalization
- Amnesty
- Abortion
Why don’t they just say “Become Democrats” and get it over with?
