“He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands”
“It’s very exciting to have JJ aboard, leading the charge as we set off to make a new Star Wars movie,” said Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy in a statement.
“JJ is the perfect director to helm this … He understands the essence of the Star Wars experience, and will bring that talent to create an unforgettable motion picture.”
George Lucas added: “I’ve consistently been impressed with JJ as a filmmaker and storyteller. He’s an ideal choice to direct the new Star Wars film and the legacy couldn’t be in better hands.”
Abrams himself said the collaboration was “an absolute honour”.
“I may be even more grateful to George Lucas now than I was as a kid,” he said.

If there was an Intenational Court for Entertainment Crimes at the Hague, this guy would be in the bullet proof box trying to mount a defense.

My inner 10-year-old is screaming with delight at the thought of finally seeing the Episodes VII, VIII, and IX that we used to wonder about when we were kids.

The Zahn books?

AS long as it’s not in George Lucas’ hands, it stands a chance.

JJ Abrams is direct disciple of Spielberg — has has the same eye, the same feel for drama.
JJ Abrams is great – but he still needs a great story – great characters – (Old – Luke? Old – Solo?) — and he needs solid acting.
Very tough gig – the expectations will be massive.

Before the Zahn books. I grew up in the 80s; I don’t think the Zahn books came out until I was in high school. Even back then, we noticed that we had Episodes IV, V, and VI. It was obvious that there should some day be a I, II, and III, but there were rumors of a VII, VIII, and IX in the back of Lucas’s brain.
The usual stuff we chatted about at lunch in the mid-80s, while we were trying to hide our Garbage Pail Kids cards from the teachers.

He was behind Lost, but he didn’t have a hand in the other two from what I can tell.

J.J. Abrams to direct Star Wars VII? Mr. Plinkett agrees.

An ad on the right side here is for a Star Wars credit card. And a few weeks ago, a banner ad for a Star Wars coffee maker with Darth Vader on the side. At this point, the Star Wars legacy has been so diluted it’s become a fine mist of atoms. By the time this is over, if it ever is, they’ll be down to quarks.

Director, shmirector.
It’s the writers that will make or break the films.
The three prequils forgot that there is more to the story than Visual Effects, and more to story than quirky charaters, and, most important, it is the Values that make the film legendary.
Cardboard cutouts, and moral relativity watered it all down so badly that I never saw any of the prequils more than once. (I didn’t even buy the video tapes / dvds)

I hope he’s dropped from Star Trek. Not to sound like a complete nerd, but having the same guy behind both of these rival franchises takes the fun out of it. Maybe Duncan Jones can take over Star Trek, or Neil Blomkamp.

In a Parallel Universe, long, long ago…
…where all men have necks like goiter-stricken bullfrogs and all women wear coffee rolls on the side of their heads, a new Force has emerged!
A dictator seeking to disarm the free people of the Confederation of Solar Systems and put them all into his medical care apparatus which will drug them into zombiedom.
CHAPTER VII- DEATHCARE OF THE COLLECTIVISTS.

True, and even in case of Lost Lindelof had a lot more say. For all intents and purposes, JJ left the series after Season 3.

I thought the new Star Trek was just a generic sci fi flick with Star Trek uniforms.

So they’re trading in clunky dialogue for shaky cam and lens flares? Got it.

Good for JJ Abrams. Just please, don’t change the visual style of Star Wars. I don’t want to see it “grunged up” or with a bunch of streaky light like the Star Trek reboot had.
Oh, and NO RED BALLS. It was dopey in Alias, it was worse in Star Trek, and I’ll force choke Abrams if it’s in Star Wars.
