Absolutely not. Universal background checks are being pushed as the “reasonable” alternative to the so-called assault weapons ban by those who want to look like they are doing something about the evils of guns while respecting the 2nd Amendment. But universal background checks mandated by the federal government are not reasonable at all.

First, the federal government has no constitutional authority to mandate these checks. Even if you want to argue that it falls under the discretion of the interstate commerce clause, not all guns are sold in interstate commerce. And even if they were, that clause is trumped by the “shall not be infringed” language of the 2nd Amendment that is rather absolute.

Second, this is nothing more than another power grab by the federal government. It is a backdoor way to accomplish what they could not accomplish directly — national registration of guns with the federal government.

No, universal background checks must be stopped.

Well, the Oklahoma Legislature still holds the power of persuasion. To start with, they ought to pass a resolution that Coburn return to consult with them and the Governor on the issue, and politely give him a deadline to do so. In addition, they could consider a creating an oversight committee to hold hearings on the activities of their Senators.

Coburn has spent way too much time caucusing with extremely Leftists Senators in the name of collegiality and comity, so much so that he has neglected issues at stake with regard to the Constitution.

He has been played by the Left often enough that one would think that he has developed a clue about their unscrupulousness.

This will do nothing to stop criminals and the mentally defective from obtaining guns. It will only serve to inconvenience and tax those who are already law-abiding citizens.

I suppose it will enable politicians to check the box that they did something, which is err… good?

Trojan Horse. What does “background check” even mean? It could mean absolutely anything in your personal history. Presriptions, divorces, bankruptcies, arrests w/o conviction, non-violent misdemeanors etc.

If it were “felony conviction check” I’d be OK with it.
