Tom Coburn talking with Democrats about background check bill
Sen. Tom Coburn (R-Okla.) is working with Democratic senators on a bill that would mandate background checks for all gun buyers, with some limited exceptions.
In an interview Friday with a Tulsa television station, Coburn said he is working with Sens. Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.) and Joe Manchin III (D-W. Va.) on plans to keep weapons away from criminals and the mentally ill.
Coburn’s office didn’t immediately respond to requests for comment, but other Senate aides familiar with the negotiations confirmed his involvement. If a deal involving Coburn pans out, his ruby-red Republican reputation would lend significantly to any bipartisan effort to draft gun-control legislation.

Perfect example of the corruption that happens when someone moves from Muskogee Oklahoma to the Other People’s Money capital of the world.
Glad he’s retiring…. he’s been there too long already
THIS IS WHY THE 17TH AMENDMENT MUST BE REPEALED

Ruby red? What the crock does that mean? Maybe it means something to Warren Buffet. It’s his newspaper
I didn’t know it was possible to be more moderate than Coburn. Coburn is so moderate you can see through him
Why not just federalize all law. That way states could save money having a legislature, and all decisions could come from Central Authority

This is the problem. Stop letting the leftists set the countries priorities. There is not a gun problem in this country, there is a gang problem.
Stop it. Next they will create the priority of global warming…and we will be led along that. Rinse and repeat for every liberal item on their wish list. Stop falling for it.

Coburn, explain to us how any of this idiocy would have affected the kid who carried out the Sandy Hook massacre that is clearly motivating your idiocy. And after you attempt to explain that non-existent connection … FOAD.

Could the Feds potentially use your prescription drug history to curtail your Second Amendment rights?

Trojan Horse. What does “background check” even mean? It could mean absolutely anything in your personal history. Presriptions, divorces, bankruptcies, arrests w/o conviction, non-violent misdemeanors etc.
If it were “felony conviction check” I’d be OK with it.

This will do nothing to stop criminals and the mentally defective from obtaining guns. It will only serve to inconvenience and tax those who are already law-abiding citizens.
I suppose it will enable politicians to check the box that they did something, which is err… good?

Coburn has spent way too much time caucusing with extremely Leftists Senators in the name of collegiality and comity, so much so that he has neglected issues at stake with regard to the Constitution.
He has been played by the Left often enough that one would think that he has developed a clue about their unscrupulousness.

Well, the Oklahoma Legislature still holds the power of persuasion. To start with, they ought to pass a resolution that Coburn return to consult with them and the Governor on the issue, and politely give him a deadline to do so. In addition, they could consider a creating an oversight committee to hold hearings on the activities of their Senators.

Great, is he going to come up with a way to get around doctor patient privilege for these wackazoids who keep managing to get guns? And then do we want a group of people who don’t like guns or the Second Amendment deciding who is nuts?

Coburn? No! Really?

Absolutely not. Universal background checks are being pushed as the “reasonable” alternative to the so-called assault weapons ban by those who want to look like they are doing something about the evils of guns while respecting the 2nd Amendment. But universal background checks mandated by the federal government are not reasonable at all.
First, the federal government has no constitutional authority to mandate these checks. Even if you want to argue that it falls under the discretion of the interstate commerce clause, not all guns are sold in interstate commerce. And even if they were, that clause is trumped by the “shall not be infringed” language of the 2nd Amendment that is rather absolute.
Second, this is nothing more than another power grab by the federal government. It is a backdoor way to accomplish what they could not accomplish directly — national registration of guns with the federal government.
No, universal background checks must be stopped.
