Rubio shows opposition to immigration reform is an inch deep
It is interesting how a seemingly insoluble problem (e.g. weaning the GOP off immigration exclusionism) melts away if the timing, the messenger, the rollout and the substance of a solution are well considered. Just as the “never agree to any tax hike anywhere, anytime” faded with the realization that the GOP couldn’t stick to that without the White House and Senate, so too there is now a pathway for the GOP to rescue itself and address a major issue.
I don’t underestimate the force of the hysterical anti-immigration voices. But those who resent any modification of previous positions, no matter how far circumstances have changed and no matter the consequences, will yelp, certainly. But here is an opportunity to shed their own rhetoric and get out of a political cul-de-sac. Let’s see if they are smart enough to grab the opportunity.

So, now Rubin is humping Rubio’s leg like she did Romney’s leg? I can’t stand her. She’s like a bad penny.
Blake on January 26, 2013 at 5:12 PM
Please don’t like Sen. Rubio, Ms. Rubin, I’m not ready the throw in the towel on him yet. People are not anti=immigration you dimwit, they are against rewarding lawbreakers. I wouldn’t get a pass if I broke a law, let alone get rewarded. Equal protection.
Cindy Munford on January 26, 2013 at 5:16 PM
You’re gonna need a bigger ruler Jen because 1 inch barely scratches the surface.
TxAnn56 on January 26, 2013 at 5:18 PM
Gee, Jenn. Let’s list the reasons:
1) Amnesty will only be a magnet for more illegals. It happened after the 1986 “reform”. It’ll happen this time as well.
2) 12-20 million new citizens will overburden an already bankrupt entitlement state.
3) 12-20 million new citizens will usher in permanent Democrat rule. Hell, it could even turn a state like Texas purple or even blue.
4) There will be no effort made to secure the border. So the GOP gives Obama everything he wants and gets nothing in return.
Doughboy on January 26, 2013 at 5:19 PM
Wishcasting.
INC on January 26, 2013 at 5:21 PM
Here are some circumstances that haven’t changed: the border is not secure. Nor will it be after the GOP signs on to amnesty. Latinos do not vote Republican. Nor will they despite any Hispandering the GOP might engage in.
So remind us Jennifer–why are supposed to sign onto this? Because immigrants are by and large nice people? No argument. But we’re signing our own political death warrant.
Kataklysmic on January 26, 2013 at 5:21 PM
ugh the old substituting “anti-illegal immigration” with “anti-immigration” trick. So tired of these word games.
MechanicalBill on January 26, 2013 at 5:23 PM
Why should the GOP meekly consign itself to the trash bin of history?
Twenty million new Dem voters in one fell swoop will do that.
OldEnglish on January 26, 2013 at 5:24 PM
Really? I thought they were still working on it behind closed doors.
You wouldn’t be a liar would you, Jen?
Dusty on January 26, 2013 at 5:26 PM
It’s consign the United States to the trash bin of history. If the Republicans are intentionally trying to bring themselves and the entire country down as quickly as possible, they couldn’t have come up with a better blueprint.
Doughboy on January 26, 2013 at 5:27 PM
Noted.
OldEnglish on January 26, 2013 at 5:30 PM
2a): Immigration reform could add millions of people under Obama health law
TxAnn56 on January 26, 2013 at 5:34 PM
Inch deep nationally translates into several feet in many primaries.
lexhamfox on January 26, 2013 at 5:35 PM
Agree wholeheartedly.
As someone else noted, the long term outlook is grim. Amnesty will only beget another amnesty and another…..
I wonder, what does this attitude mean for the respect of the rule of law in other areas? Screw it?
CW on January 26, 2013 at 5:35 PM
You forgot we can just mint a trillion dollar coin. All is good.
CW on January 26, 2013 at 5:36 PM
Which is why this battle will be won or lost in the House.
TxAnn56 on January 26, 2013 at 5:40 PM
I just made a puddle of vomit that is an inch deep.
Pork-Chop on January 26, 2013 at 5:42 PM
i wanted to congratulate jen on her column ripping apart mitt for hiring illegals, but couldn’t find it.
renalin on January 26, 2013 at 5:44 PM
What’s the cost of adding 12 million more poor people to Obamacare?
El_Terrible on January 26, 2013 at 6:00 PM
Do let it burn people think more illegals is good? More shop lifters and rioters is not good to me.
Mormontheman on January 26, 2013 at 6:07 PM
The people STRONGLY oppose amnesty and strongly SUPPORT defending the borders.
The opposition is an inch deep only in Washington. The democrats want the new voters, and republicans beholden to corporations want the cheap labor.
Just proving that voting democrat or republican… “what difference does it make?”
wildcat72 on January 26, 2013 at 6:12 PM
They could add the rest of the Planet to Obamacare, medicare, and socialist security at this point, it wouldn’t make the programs any LESS solvent, they are already doomed.
I heard Mark Levin read a report last week on his show that if the federal government had to release financial numbers in the same way that businesses have to (using accepted accounting practices) the annual deficit is over 7 TRILLION (because businesses have to include liabilities, the government doesn’t have to account for the unfunded liabilities of medicare and socialist security).
wildcat72 on January 26, 2013 at 6:14 PM
Might as well support women in combat too, Jen. Go for the trifecta.
Seth Halpern on January 26, 2013 at 6:29 PM
immigration != illegal immigration. JRubin writes in bad faith. She knows what she’s doing. She is not an honest broker. She is a propaganda merchant not an honest editorialist(is that a word?). Shame on her for having such little respect for us.
BoxHead1 on January 26, 2013 at 6:35 PM
Another twit speaks. Sigh.
This is the same old BS. Anti-illegal is not differentiated from anti-immigrant, and if you oppose HER form of reform, you are against any type of reform.
Amnesty rewards lawbreakers, and the borders aren’t protected, so what is the logical conclusion? There will be more lawbreakers and more illegal immigrants. That kind of reform is not only useless, it’s potentially damaging.
