Let’s thank the French for intervening in Mali
The French deserve our thanks for repelling Islamist advances in northern Mali. What they do not deserve is a Pentagon bill for the limited military support we have provided in recent days. Indeed, if it is true, as reported in the French media, that United States has withheld larger deliveries of military assistance until assured of payment, then Washington ought to be ashamed of itself.
In recent days, U.S. transport planes have begun moving French troops and equipment into Mali—two planeloads on Monday, one on Tuesday; and defense secretary Leon Panetta has assured French officials that more can be made available. But the painfully grudging American response to French appeals for help is embarrassing and unbecoming for a superpower supposedly in the vanguard of the struggle against global terrorism.
France is doing the heavy lifting in Mali, because Mali was a French colony and many Frenchmen still live there. It became clear a few weeks ago that Islamist radicals were moving into position to seize the capital city of Bamako. The pathetically inept government of Mali could do little to stop them and requested urgent assistance. The socialist French prime minister, Francois Hollande, though opposed to military intervention and besieged by economic crisis, sent planes, tanks and thousands of troops to Mali. Frenchmen were threatened, and he acted promptly and courageously.

Yeah, because everybody knows what team players the French are…

France acted decisively in their own interests and with the support of their allies. It worked out well so far.
Mali still needs a political solution to the North South divide which allowed this problem to become a crisis. They really are two different countries with different people. Peeling the secular MNLA away from the AQ types made a huge difference but it will be a problem again if the French leave without a long term solution to the problem.

No, let’s remind them of being duplicitous and working against us in Iraq.

Okay, I think I’m starting to get it… We should cut our defense spending while simultaneously using our military to courier french people to their former colony to fight a war against the enemies of their preferred dictator.
How about 1) the french invest their own resources into troop transports, and their own military in general
and 2) if we must help the french with another tin pot dictator situation, we charge them for it.
We’ve been paying the bill to keep Europe safe since WW2. Now we’re paying for colonial powers to fight wars in former colonies? Ridiculous.

And lets not forget that these are the same people that constantly want to cut our military budget. Now, I agree we can trim back a lot of fat at the pentagon, but I say we start by trimming back on using our military cargo jets as an airline for the French army.
The Libya thing should have been eye opening for the Europeans — without the US providing the logistics and much of the money, they couldn’t even overthrow a third world tin pot dictator. Maybe it’s time for them to figure out a way to pay for their own militaries.

The French should thank us. The language they treasure so is still alive for one reason. Good thing for them we could move their hapless asses over to the theater. Thank us.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but did not the french intervene in Indo China wherein the U.S. had to pick up where they left off?
How did that work out again?
