It’s not a matter of Europe being “next”; obviously Europe only has a coin flip chance at best to be considered part of the developed world in 30 years.

It’s a matter of America abdicating the field completely and suddenly from the post-9/11 high of leadership. This has happened because, in equal parts, a) it has elected a liberal leadership that still preens as the anti-Bush on the strategy level*, which means never using force except when America has no material interest and is supported by an equally effette coalition b) we’re totally out of money and can’t maintain our level of spending without a war.

*(though it’s perfectly willing to go far beyond Bush or even Putin at the tactical level)

I’m not laughing. I find it extremely sad that America has squandered its greatness to such a point that anyone would even consider the possibility that Europe might overtake us as the next superpower.
