Is Trump trying to buy the New York Times?
Now Trump is exploring ways to make news in a more literal way: by acquiring the New York Times. According to sources familiar with the situation, Trump has engaged in more than one meeting to discuss how he might buy the Grey Lady. Details of Trump’s strategy remain scant. And it seems unlikely, to say the least, that the Sulzberger family, which controls the company’s voting shares, would welcome his offer.
A spokesperson for Trump declined to comment. The Times also declined to comment. The newspaper has long been rumored to be a coveted trophy for acquisitive billionaires, with Mayor Michael Bloomberg commonly mentioned as a potential buyer.

This would be the single best thing Donald Trump could do as a political gesture.

And all the Journos would just jump ship and go work for Slate or MSDNC.

Holy crap that would be awesome.

I like.
Pork-Chop on January 23, 2013 at 12:42 PM
Lulz-burger and crew probably wouldn’t sell to Trump. Lefties do like to sell their media outlets, however, to Al-Jazeera, so maybe Trump has connections in Qatar that he can use as a front group.
JimLennon on January 23, 2013 at 12:46 PM
They’d never sell to Trump. The Grey Lady is a Whore for the left. They wont’ share her.
portlandon on January 23, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Trump has figured it out….don’t beat them, just buy them.
William Eaton on January 23, 2013 at 12:49 PM
Well, I doubt Carlos Slim would go along with that.

Perhaps if Al Jazeera acted as a straw puerchaser for The Donald?

Is he hoping to get his hands on Øbama’s birth certificate that the NYT has locked in their vault?
Odysseus on January 23, 2013 at 1:00 PM
The Microsloth Strategem really does work, if you have the money to do it.
MelonCollie on January 23, 2013 at 1:00 PM
You say that like it’s a bad thing.
The Rogue Tomato on January 23, 2013 at 1:00 PM
Sulzburgers won’t sell it to him. He’d have to use Al Jazeera as a straw man to buy it.

Sorry, that’s what I get for posting before reading.
But last year I tried reading the threads first, and I always ended up with nothing left to say.
petefrt on January 23, 2013 at 1:06 PM
Trump is a master troll.
Good Lt on January 23, 2013 at 1:06 PM
This is the right idea. We need to take over their messaging apparatuses from the inside.
crrr6 on January 23, 2013 at 1:09 PM
Could he do a hostile takeover of the NYT?
ChunkyLover on January 23, 2013 at 1:10 PM
This is exactly what we need.
One or two news sources can be isolated. The more news sources the more they can play off each other and site ‘studies’ and such.
If we each buy a couple Comcast shares we can take over the source of news.
GardenGnome on January 23, 2013 at 1:13 PM
This.
Red Cloud on January 23, 2013 at 1:14 PM
It’s amusing in a ‘that’s pathetic’ sense how after Trump has disappointed conservatives so many times, they still jump into his arms for every little bone he throws at them.
Remember the earth-shattering revelation, the huge announcement that would change the course of the coming presidential election?
lester on January 23, 2013 at 1:14 PM
What is wrong lester, worried that your one of your three sources of news might be taken over by Trump.
William Eaton on January 23, 2013 at 1:18 PM
Sounds like someone’s a little cranky about the idea of someone taking over their propaganda arm.
I could well get used to the NYT op-ed page looking more like the WSJ’s, and the “paper of record” actually reporting stories that are disfavorable to Obama.
crrr6 on January 23, 2013 at 1:18 PM
yeah, kind of like how many people voted for obama just because of his skin color.
ChunkyLover on January 23, 2013 at 1:19 PM
The announcement that your overpromoted garbage man was running for POTUS a second time?
MelonCollie on January 23, 2013 at 1:19 PM
Yes he could, the Slimes is so deeply in debt that if Trump was willing to spend the cold hard cash required he most definitely could.
SWalker on January 23, 2013 at 1:20 PM
The one where Romeny mentioned he had a folder with some women’s resumes in it? Yeah, I remember that.

China to buy Boeing…just a thought.
Schadenfreude on January 23, 2013 at 1:21 PM
i wish he could! i can’t stand the NYT…
Sachiko on January 23, 2013 at 1:37 PM
Is it true that Trump would hire Glen Beck to be his managing editor?
BuckeyeSam on January 23, 2013 at 1:39 PM
Ha!!!!!
Can you imagine the terror going through that newsroom at the thought of Trump having editorial control of the Times?
They’re falling in to two camps. Those that are $hitting their pants and those whose a$$holes are so tight they can’t.
BacaDog on January 23, 2013 at 1:46 PM
Buy Comcast instead. Rachael Maddow…YOU’RE FIRED!
OxyCon on January 23, 2013 at 1:53 PM
That’s a thought. Plus Trump is probably sharp and tough enough to pull it off.
petefrt on January 23, 2013 at 1:56 PM
If this is true, then I love Trump for trying. This is precisely what Conservative billionaires should be doing, buying the damn media.
Daemonocracy on January 23, 2013 at 2:06 PM
Too funny if it happens.
The Paper of Record might actually sell enough copy to be viable.
CorporatePiggy on January 23, 2013 at 2:14 PM
I’m not a Trump fan, but this would actually be constructive. I’m all for it. We need more zillionaires buying up media up for our side.
juliesa on January 23, 2013 at 2:17 PM
Remember too– look at your local paper anywhere in the country, there is very little original reporting any more, it’s all reprints from syndicated articles in AP or NY TImes
Control the NY Times, you get a voice in papers around the US overnight
Start by gutting their disaster of an editorial section. Burn it to the ground.
We need more billionaires buying media, making movies, etc– not wasting more millions on SuperPAC TV ads
