Phil Mickelson: I probably shouldn’t have talked about leaving California over taxes
In a statement to Fox News late Monday, Mickelson apologized to anyone he may have “upset or insulted” with the comments that his high tax bracket was causing him to consider “drastic changes” in his life, including possibly moving his family out of state and even retiring from the game of golf.
“Finances and taxes are a personal matter and I should not have made my opinions on them public,” Mickelson said.
Mickelson also said he is currently working on learning about the new tax laws that have raised his rate, and is relying on the advice of experts to make decisions for the future.

C’mon, Phil! I’ve seen your game! I thought you had a pair!

Speak your mind, and don’t apologize.

Lefty needs to apologize for apologizing.

Disappointed
bernzright777 on January 22, 2013 at 12:43 PM
The left has made the environment extremely hostile for anyone who disagrees out loud.
We are now ‘the other’ and they will ostracize and marginalize us all the way into cattle cars if we let them.
Washington Nearsider on January 22, 2013 at 12:43 PM
Phil, I still like ya, but come on man!
22044 on January 22, 2013 at 12:43 PM
Y’know… good for you, Mickelson! Step right up and apologize. As an act of contrition, never set outside of the state of California without written permission from the department of transportation (or your bureaucracy of choice).
Jeddite on January 22, 2013 at 12:44 PM
Why in the world would phil feel the need to go back on what he said on the gosh horrible amount of taxes he pays? I guess telling the truth gets you no where in the US any longer?
phil, you just lost any respect I had for you, but I bet you don’t give a flit about that either?

sauldalinsky on January 22, 2013 at 12:46 PM
Well the guy did make a pr commercial to encourage people to move to California so it’s a little hypocritical. Just another liberal who got mugged by reality. See you at the 2016 GOP convention Phil.

I’m guessing a posse of libs drove by his house revving their Priuses threateningly.
TexasDan on January 22, 2013 at 12:47 PM
And why on Earth would you NEED to apologize. You are entitled to an opinion; give it and, if some people don’t like it, shrug it off.
Jees, Man up!
michaelo on January 22, 2013 at 12:47 PM
Interesting, I didn’t know that. I end up chuckling when I see one of those commercials. It’s been a while.

This one is the craziest: a retroactive tax going back FIVE YEARS on people who have sold a business. Tax back to 2008 must now be paid … WITH INTEREST!

because…
a) My liberal friends are giving me sh*t about it
b) I’m scared I won’t get invited to groovy parties anymore
c) Both a and b
FIFY
Meaning, you want to minimize your tax exposure like any rational individual would. Funny thing about Estate Planning; it would seem like only evil Republicans would care about doing that. And yet, I wonder, do wealthy Democrats also have Estate Plans? I can’t imagine why, because they are so into paying their fair share. Which means, to me, you wouldn’t bother with estate planning because you would have no problem paying your default, maximum rate on everything, right? Hmmm…

He makes a living playing with balls but is unable to locate a pair of his own. Not surprised.

Pathetic. Totally pathetic.

I love that static analysis lovers refuse to consider people like Mickelson actually changing their behavior.
They’re shocked, SHOCKED, when they do. Every time.
Washington Nearsider on January 22, 2013 at 1:03 PM
because if he plays in a tournament in CA, he’ll have to pay taxes on what he wins anyway.
Also doesn’t help that his main sponsor, Callaway, is in SoCal as well. He certainly has numerous commitments with them and thus add to his in-state tax days. To relieve himself of that tax burden, he’ll have to sign with a new equipment manufacturer at the end of the year. Talking about it now certainly won’t help with those negotiations.
phreshone on January 22, 2013 at 1:03 PM
Phil, my advice to you is stop talking about your taxes and stop talking about leaving California. And never apologize for speaking the truth.
Just leave. Go to Texas, enjoy the warm weather, and keep more of your money and wave bye-bye to California as it swirls down the drain.
UltimateBob on January 22, 2013 at 1:05 PM
He already has millions of dollars and psoriatic arthritis. I don’t think he’ll be playing professional golf much longer. He should just leave California and live elsewhere.
UltimateBob on January 22, 2013 at 1:09 PM
Well, if he doesn’t like playing for $60 million a year, he can pay to play on a public course, like the rest of us. The repubs talk about high tax rates stifling business, but I don’t think they do for the stars of sports, stage, screen, music. and politics. There should be a special category just for them that takes 90% of what they make. They only employ an accountant, manager, trainer, and possibly a caddy. There are not 100 people sitting in a productive factory somewhere because of them. Sort of like politicians.

Sadly true…

Being in California – Phil found out that speaking negatively about the GOVERNMENT is now frowned upon.
Incredible.
California has become a leftist mecca. ALL BAD – everyone is leaving
jake-the-goose on January 22, 2013 at 1:31 PM
He’d be a fool not to move to a state with low or no state taxes.

So was it some State of CA goon or PGA goon?
I don’t know crap about pro golf. Does the PGA micromanage their behavior or care what they talk about?
