New idea from New Zealand: Let’s eradicate pet cats
Morgan called on his countrymen Tuesday to make their current cat their last in order to save the nation’s unique bird species. He set up a website, called Cats To Go, depicting a tiny kitten with red devil’s horns. The opening line: “That little ball of fluff you own is a natural born killer.”
He doesn’t recommended people euthanize their current cats — “Not necessarily but that is an option” are the site’s exact words — but rather neuter them and not replace them when they die. Morgan, an economist and well-known businessman, also suggests people keep cats indoors and that local governments make registration mandatory…
For thousands of years, New Zealand’s native birds had no predators and flourished. Some species, like the kiwi, became flightless. But the arrival of mankind and its introduction of predators like cats, dogs and rodents has wiped out some native bird species altogether and endangered many others.

Why don’t they just deal with outdoor cats, like laws and licensing?

BAN HIGH CAPACITY KITTENS!
YOU DON’T NEED 4 CLAWS TO KILL A KIWI!

Maybe I should read the whole bit presented, but still that’s like killing a fly with a hammer.
kim roy on January 22, 2013 at 3:44 PM
He would have better luck eradicating cats by calling for less vigorous restaurant inspections.

And when the rodent population explodes, what then?
Dusty on January 22, 2013 at 3:53 PM
Then you import some other rodent-eating invasive species and bitch about that in a few years.

Ok, now that crosses the line. You can take away my money. You can take my dignity. You can take my guns. But don’t even THINK of taking away my pu$$y.
The Rogue Tomato on January 22, 2013 at 4:00 PM
Yeah exactly. We’ve been spoiled for so long by seeing mice only in labs or on farms or in really run-down houses that we’ve forgotten how horribly common rodents used to be! Ladies of HA, imagine seeing mice on a regular basis. *cue the girly screams*
If people are stupid enough to follow the bad advice of this greenie doofus, though I don’t think they will, mother nature will promptly plant her foot up their backsides so hard they’ll fart shoelaces.

I never liked Kiwis…

Cats will seduce, torment and ultimately enslave you.
Oh wait, I’m thinking of something else entirely. Or am I?
Seth Halpern on January 22, 2013 at 4:07 PM
By all means, restrict pet cats to indoor life if you want…they live longer, healthier lives that way. But don’t say they can’t exist in your country.
James on January 22, 2013 at 4:13 PM
The last bunch of superstitious nitwits who made cat ownership illegal caused a rodent and vermin population explosion that carried the Black Death into Europe, killing more than a third of the population.
Then again, people who believe in such fantasies as cat owning women being evil witches are of the same intellectual level as those who believe in the man made global warming scriptures of the Goreacle.

There is a huge difference between clean domesticated pet rodents and dirty, wild, plague and disease carrying ones.

@wildcat72: You don’t know what kind of rats she keeps.
Seth Halpern on January 22, 2013 at 4:30 PM
It was a joke, folks.
I know there’s a difference. Just said it to make the point that not all women are scared of rodents.
I keep the nice ones you get from breeders or pet stores, not the cranky ones in the dumpster.

Oops, wrong thread.

They can have my cats when they pry them from my cold, dead hands.
UltimateBob on January 22, 2013 at 4:51 PM
I own a cat.
With that out of the way, I do think that feral cat populations should be, ahem, “controlled.” And no, “catch, neuter and release” doesn’t work. They can damage bird populations. In a unique ecosystem like NZ, this could be a big problem.

Since I’m not a New Zealander, I say let them govern themselves however they like. The world has plenty of cats, but most of NZ’s native species are unique.
flataffect on January 22, 2013 at 5:41 PM
Ban cats. Go for it.
Apparently a leftie hasn’t been born who can be reasoned with.
Maybe, possibly, real life can teach them something.
vityas on January 22, 2013 at 6:01 PM
I have a cat as well. It requires some diligence and keeping them in a safe place. It was hard at first with this cat (our previous cat wasn’t remotely interested), but it’s getting much easier and she cares less and less. Hopefully in about 5-10 years she won’t at all!
It is possible. Just a bit more work and definitely more with three cats. That might just be a bit too hard.
