Remember when schools had gun clubs?
Up until the ’70s, especially in rural areas, it was commonplace to see kids entering and leaving their school campuses with rifle bags slung lazily over their backs. Guns were left in school lockers, and rifles and shotguns were routinely seen in high-school parking lots, hanging in the rear windows of pickup trucks. A good friend of mine is from North Dakota. His father was telling me recently that in the late 1960s he would hunt before school and then take his rifle — and his bloodstained kills — to school to show his teachers. He and his friends would compare their shooting techniques in the school grounds. Nobody batted an eyelid. In North Dakota, school shootings were non-existent; in the country at large, they were extremely rare…
Such attitudes would no doubt be regarded as alarming today, as unthinkable as the old — and true — slogan that “America grew up with a rifle in its hand.” So widespread has been the shift in educators’ attitudes that in 1990 Congress legislated to render all schools “gun-free zones.” The law made reasonable exceptions for weapons that were taken to school “for use in a program approved by a school in the school zone” and, regardless, it was struck down on grounds of federal overreach in 1997. Still, that such an exception needed carving out at all would have astonished many a few years earlier, not to mention inconvenienced hundreds of thousands of harmless students who, in the process of going about their business, innocently and safely kept rifles in their cars.

Like I said, you sound like a liberal troll, and how exactly is someone supposed to discern the difference unless they know your posting history?
sharrukin on January 21, 2013 at 8:09 PM
Uh. We were doing this in the 90s. In California.
besser tot als rot on January 21, 2013 at 8:09 PM
Tactically an interesting approach, trying to put your opponent off their game by leveling this charge, but strategically I’m not sure it makes that much sense. Pfleger/Wright or a host of other folks it works on, because of their double standards, but you gotta demonstrate the double standard or the racialist assumption to really make it work…just saying “Racist” doesn’t work so well these days.
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:11 PM
LOL.
GWB on January 21, 2013 at 8:12 PM
Poor little JFKY made himself look like the idiot. Poor boy.
CW on January 21, 2013 at 8:13 PM
TS Eliot ruined me, I kind of expect the audience to have a little knowledge….
And, of course, by the second posting with the ALL CAPS “sarcasm” I thought would reveal to all but the densest, that this was meant to troll…I mean surely the whole “hitching post” line might have been a clue…I don’t think I’ve seen that even at HuffPo or Daily Kos….
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:13 PM
JFKY has to much pride to admit he was the one who phucked up. Sad.
CW on January 21, 2013 at 8:14 PM
The problem is that lefty logic is so absurd that it can be difficult to distinguish snark from serious “argument.” I take the tack of almost always assuming snark – that’s why some of the lefty trolls crack me up.

JFKY just keeps proving himself the idiot. Lovin’ it!!
CW on January 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM
This whole conversation is pretty stupid.

I’m the idiot for falling for the obviously loaded troll-post….YOU might learn something form this, notably that your opponents aren’t all fools or idiots…and you seem to think they are, if you honestly believe one of your opponents would seriously raise that line with you.
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:15 PM
Yep,
AND now back to the THREAD about the article instead of responding to the troll…
I just shot an email to an old high school friend. He still has the rifle from back then and just used last summer to teach his granddaughter to shoot. She was getting a 2 inch group at 25 yards…he was so proud of her
I remember shooting cans on the weekend. Bottles we forbidden since we had to keep the area clear of glass. We had a good time..and no one ever got hurt..well, other than one guy, but he just dropped a block on his foot. No firearm accidents.

It is illegal to open carry a BB gun in California.

From now on, I’ll note Galt2009 is sarcasm-challenged…
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:22 PM
We can all remember a time when guns weren’t an issue.
Recall that repeating firearms were invented of over 160 years ago – and yet these massacres in gun-free zones are recent phenomena
Why is that?
Could it be the cultural rot borne of the Left?
Galt2009 on January 21, 2013 at 8:22 PM
Don’t know the guy. I registered on Hotair around the 2008 election.

*WHOA* now you are being sarcastic, right? Please tell me that Cali has not sunk so low as this…
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:23 PM
JFKY– Do you hear violins?
Poor little troll got caught in his own trap and now has been spending the last half hour trying to convince just about everyone he isn’t the idiot. Friggin hilarious.

Amen to that.

Still bouncing around in the cooler, eh CW? Trip home will calm you down, once the oxygen level falls low enough in the box, I guess.
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:25 PM
Unfortunately it doesn’t come across as sarcasm because liberals say stupid crap just like that.
ButterflyDragon on January 21, 2013 at 8:25 PM
From now on, I’ll note JFKY a Racist – and a troll.
A Racist Troll that doesn’t wish to debate the issue at hand but that of it’s own warped Racist agenda.
I’m not one to call for the banhammer, but in this case..
Galt2009 on January 21, 2013 at 8:26 PM
In all seriousness, read “Up from Slavery” by David Boaz (Cato Institute). It addresses, well, this whole “I remember when this was a free country” lament…
It IS a free country…ask yourself this question, “If I were Shoshanna Washington, lesbian, woman of colour which Tuscaloosa Alabama would I want to live in, 2013 or 1913?”
In many ways it is a MUCH freer nation than it once was…I think as Conservatives we might think closely on this essay and that sort of question.
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:32 PM
JFKY the Racist:
What does that and your previous trolling efforts have to do with the issue presented?
Galt2009 on January 21, 2013 at 8:44 PM
You can grasp the connection, now, right Galt2009? That Boaz addresses, JUST that sort of lament…and does it via the medium of pointing out that WHITE men, like to say things like that, but that woman and people of Colour see it differently…and that UNTIL we conservatives recognize this difference and can explain, incorporate it into the argument for conservatism, we will be lacking…
again, lesbian, Black…which Tuscaloosa would you live in? And would you say that you would be freer, as one, in 1913? And unless and until we begin to see that there are groups who DO NOT see America s “less free” that lament is pointless.
JFKY on January 21, 2013 at 8:50 PM
I don’t think you grasp what “to be free” really means. Your example imposes upon others – that’s not free.
OldEnglish on January 21, 2013 at 9:04 PM
I have no problem doing it.
This lowlife should not be making unprovoked and off-topic charges of racism or accusations of slave owning.
It is not necessary, not polite conduct and morally reprehensible.
Some things go beyond the pale.
BAN HAMMER PLEASE!
turfmann on January 21, 2013 at 9:05 PM
Yet, when the left begins to crank down the vise, even that lesbian colored woman in Alabama in 1913 will have been significantly more free.
Nice distract with the lesbian bit, btw. Being able to indulge your perversions doesn’t make you more free. That’s ultimately one of the two big problems: confusing hedonism for liberty. It’s a cultural problem.
The other issue – which is the one bgibbs was addressing – is the trading of independence for some measure of “security”. Independence *is* freedom. I believe it is Thomas Sowell who has written so eloquently about blacks being more independent and self-reliant before the civil rights movement culminated in government programs. Those government programs – no matter the good they are intended to accomplish – diminish our freedom… *everyone’s* freedom.
GWB on January 21, 2013 at 9:30 PM
Oh, as for which Tuscaloosa? I’m not sure on Tusacaloosa, but I know which Detroit or New York or Chicago she would rather live in, and it isn’t the 2013 one.
GWB on January 21, 2013 at 9:32 PM
And sometimes they make that history up as they go along. For example, we have it on good authority but with no evidence that I have a shrine to Sarah Palin set up around here somewhere, and that I have sexual fantasies about her.
Anyway, JFKY, you are henceforth a liberal troll, whether you like it or not. ROFL
ddrintn on January 21, 2013 at 9:39 PM
You know, actually I think the answer to that isn’t as easy as it may seem.
ddrintn on January 21, 2013 at 9:41 PM
^ The point being, for every gain there is a corresponding loss.
ddrintn on January 21, 2013 at 9:42 PM
It’s official.
The LSM killed satire with its performance in the ’08 campaign.
And now six weeks worth of spittle flecked ranting by the hoplophobic progressives has beaten sarcasm to a bloody and unrecognizable carcass.
Services will be closed casket.
Damn shame.
soundingboard on January 21, 2013 at 9:53 PM
How does that disprove that you are a Racist?
Galt2009 on January 21, 2013 at 9:57 PM
Fact is there is no one around here who could be rightfully charged with what the Racist troll JFKY has charged.
That and a deliberate thread hijacking into spurious territory should be justification for the ‘hammer.
Galt2009 on January 21, 2013 at 10:01 PM
That was all BEFORE schools routinely supplied drugs to their students.
It’s time we all paraphrased Homer Simpson’s favorite toast: “To the federal government: the cause of — and solution to — all of America’s problems.”
logis on January 21, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Part of what this site does is provide us with an unfiltered look into the dark, twisted psyche of the radical liberal. And there is no more dark and twisted psyche than that of the troll.
Of course “Shoshanna, Alabama” – whoever or whatever that’s supposed to represent – is not an individual “person” or a specific “place” in any normal sense. Radical liberals must assiduously avoid thinking in those terms.
That’s why KY’s friend Shoshanna — like Obama’s imaginary girlfriend “Julia, New York” — is a composite. “Julia” was used to demonstrate how central control of the economy will cure all of society’s ills. She had to be; because whenever Communal economics is examined from the point of view of the individual, it always turns into a deranged nightmare.
Does “Shoshanna’s” imaginary life prove that the only possible reason students could bring guns to school is so that white students can murder black lesbians? Of course it does; inside this guy’s head, that connection is as direct as any the line between any two thoughts ever can be.
We need to be reminded of that. Granted, not nearly as often as this particular nutcase does it. But if he’s to be banned, it should be for the crime of Spamming; not for doing the only useful thing he knows how to do.
