They are the sorriest excuse for allies we’ve had since we funded AQ to fight the USSR. Saudis are the epitome of Arabs: one arm out to shake your hand and the other behind their back holding a dagger.

If one or more of the oxygen-wasting extremist groups they’ve been funding since God-knows-when actually decides that THEY would make a good target, I for one say “reap what you sow”.

America has no serious options for effecting gradual reform in the kingdom.

America, no. The Saudis have a couple of options, but not things the US can just do for them. They can go from the bottom up, holding control over the important things while charging municipal governments deal with most of the spending. Actually, local spending scandals would go a long way toward taking pressure off the central government.

To be fair, the majority weren’t Saudis because the Saudis hate us more than the rest, it was that Saudi passports were not scrutinized as much as other Muslim countries because KSA is such a good friend (cough, cough).
