Please take away my right to a gun
I am one of the millions of people in this country who live with depression. I knew that in the gun registration form there would be a version of this question: Have you ever voluntarily or involuntarily been committed to a hospital? The answer is yes — voluntarily. But because my hospitalization was years earlier and I wasn’t in treatment at the time, I could have gotten a gun.
My depression appeared for the first time in the late ’90s, right before I began writing for politicians. It comes and goes like fog. Medicine can help. I have my tricks to manage and get through it. Sometimes it sticks around for a day or a week, and sometimes it stays away for a couple of years. But it never leads me to sleep all day, cry and wear sweat pants like the people in the commercials. You’d look at me and never know that sometimes my fight against the urge to die is so tough the only way I get through it is second by second; I live by the second hand.

How about we take away the First Amendment from you so this nonsense doesn’t get published?
nobar on January 19, 2013 at 11:04 PM
What? Is she to stupid to figure out to get rid of hers on her own?
Wait, I read the piece. She is that stupid.
cozmo on January 19, 2013 at 11:06 PM
Well so much for the emancipated, liberated, woman…that didn’t last long…thanks Mr. Government for taking care of me, I am helpless…
right2bright on January 19, 2013 at 11:07 PM
This is just like the Low Info’s who want their taxes to go up – no one is stopping you from not having a gun.
But that isn’t it for the Oppressive-left, They want to take away all the freedom’s that other’s have and want to given kudo’s for doing it.
Too bad she didn’t say ‘Please take away my right to Free-speech’.
Galt2009 on January 19, 2013 at 11:08 PM
I’m sorry that this woman is suffering, but she is also an ignoramus.
With rights come responsibilities. If she’s not feeling up to having a gun around then it is her responsibility to stay away from them.
Her illness has no bearing upon her inalienable right and certainly no bearing upon the rights of others.
turfmann on January 19, 2013 at 11:08 PM
Julia, is that you?

Since the pen is mightier than the sword, shouldn’t we also take away her First Amendment rights?
sharrukin on January 19, 2013 at 11:10 PM
Other things Wendy should forfeit the right to buy: a razor blade, a rope, a hose long enough to extend from the tail pipe of her car to one of its window, her depression medication, an apartment higher than the first floor, a plastic sack, taxi fare to a bridge, shoelaces…
RMOccidental on January 19, 2013 at 11:10 PM
Genuine LOL.
I’m not going to perform contextual analysis of this here, but I think this story vibes about as real as Tea Tray’s girlfriend.
CorporatePiggy on January 19, 2013 at 11:11 PM
“Wendy”
Do you know how hard this narrative hurt Bishop?
You might as well have dumped a high capacity military style barrette into him.
Fo’shame girl.
CorporatePiggy on January 19, 2013 at 11:14 PM
So she shouldn’t own a gun because she might commit suicide?
Have we removed all sharp object from her home as well? No?
Well nobody tell her that a knife can break skin; clearly brainiac here hasn’t figure that piece of information out. And I’m not convinced we should take major policy recommendations from someone who can’t figure out how a knife works.
gekkobear on January 19, 2013 at 11:14 PM
Another non-sequitur. Several, in fact.
Many people who killed themselves used firearms. Some did not. Not one mention of the fact that many of those who killed themselves with firearms would have found another way to end their lives had they no access to firearms. Many who go the route of suicide aim to do it, regardless of the means available. Inferring that many who killed themselves would not have had they no access to firearms simply is disingenuous.
It is also extremely disturbing that this person also infers others 2nd Amendment rights should be taken away because she wants her taken away. She can already voluntarily choose to not exercise her rights if she so chooses
Even more disturbing is this person, who fears she can’t control herself, is comfortable with granting the government that ability unilaterally.
She wants to be a slave.
And she wants to drag others in with her.
catmman on January 19, 2013 at 11:15 PM
Ok, you aren’t allowed to have a gun.
Are we done here?
Is the New York Times picking up the slack for shuttered Newsweek or something?
HitNRun on January 19, 2013 at 11:20 PM
How hard is it to not buy a gun. This female is not too bright. I think this story only got published because it fits the media’s current meme. This reminds me of those “rich” people begging the government to please raise my taxes (and on those like me) when they have the right to donate more of their own money to the government if they so choose.
Corsair on January 19, 2013 at 11:23 PM
Are you sure it wasn’t right after you started writing for politicians? That would make a lot more sense.

We should also get rid of the Golden Gate Bridge.

I don’t have a gun because I’m a klutz. How hard is it for this woman to take responsibility with her life?

Good grief. On a side note, we sure have messed up that whole natural selection thing, haven’t we?

I fully support stripping all liberals of 2nd amendment rights.
Darth Executor on January 19, 2013 at 11:32 PM
Poor Wendy. We should also remove her right to have sharp objects and garages with doors.
LilyBart on January 19, 2013 at 11:40 PM

And there is liberalism in a nutshell folks. Please lead me. I don’t know how to manage my life, I need someone to do it for me.
Once again, liberalism is a disease and there are two types of liberals. The paternalistic narcissist who believes they know what’s best for everyone and the codependent (such as the author of this article) who want someone to tell them how to live their life.
It’s a sickness. And I’m not joking or being hyperbolic. It’s a disease that needs to be stamped out.
ButterflyDragon on January 19, 2013 at 11:51 PM
Or don’t. I really have no compassion for someone who wants to rid me of my rights.
Ronnie on January 19, 2013 at 11:53 PM
The “mental illness” tag will now be used by the left to prevent “normal” people from getting guns. I have noticed that some left wing nuts are now pushing the idea of mental check-ups for all new gun purchasers. Of course Psychiatrists (and the mental health industry as a whole) will be happy to nail every law abiding American who wants to buy a gun with a mental disorder of some kind or another thus preventing you from getting a gun, plus they will take your cash and cause all sorts of other problems for your future once Obama Care kicks in fully.
I am all for keeping guns out of truly insane people, but for simple depression, no, and god forbid if your kids are on all those idiotic personality modifying drugs for stupid things like attention deficit disorder. Yes boys tend to be out of control, that is why they are called “boys”! You have basically prevented them from getting a gun in the future or worse yet signing them up to a life time of being screwed by the government.
Be careful with progressives they always have a back door plan to get your freedoms. The “Most of America has some kind of mental illness plan” for depriving you of your liberties sounds like something tailor made for progressives.
William Eaton on January 19, 2013 at 11:56 PM
Her government should lock her in a rubber room wearing a straight jacket at all times except for eating and bathroom duties.
That should solve all her problems and do wonders for her depression…
It’s for her own good, she’s asking for help, give it to her.

Mentally unstable and suicidal leftist speech writer wants to take rights away from everyone because she doesn’t think she can handle them herself. Okay, I got it.

These are the people that need the crutch of religion. I would suggest Christianity. I am a Deist, but some people seriously need religion to keep them safe. Christianity worked great for the western world for hundreds of years and did a lot of good.
The problems with ditching Christianity as we have done over the last 100 years is these people who have weaknesses mentally or need structure in their lives or need the group support which the Christian faith offers, end up turning to other ideologies that are worse. They get drugged up by psychologist and are taken in by cults of personality. See the Obama cult…it is a perfect example.

Women don’t typically kill themselves with guns. More often its pills or slitting wrists.
LilyBart on January 20, 2013 at 12:10 AM
I don’t have a gun handy, they are locked away and I doubt I could get to them before someone broke in…however, I have a bat, and that guy better be bigger than me and a bigger bat…ever been hit in the knee? That boy is going down before he gets through the window…and I wouldn’t have to feed my dog that day.
right2bright on January 20, 2013 at 12:27 AM
A perfect summary…

The Slimes, of course. Why did I know this before I even checked the link. No clickie.
So everyone else has to take a hit because a few have no ability or desire for self-control?
Lowest common denominator wins again. Only in liberal-land.

It never occurred to her to get rid of her gun if she no longer wanted it? Waiting for the govt?
Tasha on January 20, 2013 at 12:52 AM
Exactly the point I was going to make. This is 100% propaganda. God damn if the ends don’t justify the means. These people are sick. They have mental illnesses. Here’s the rare case that admits it, if only to take one for the totalitarian team.
I thought liberals were in favor of euthanasia. Do you have to have terminal cancer to qualify? Why are liberals so discriminatory against mental illnesses. A sane, sorted, optomist with cancer suffers less than the poor soul with chronic, severe depression.
Kungfoochimp on January 20, 2013 at 12:54 AM
Exactly. Well said.
GWB on January 20, 2013 at 12:57 AM
Because I need the government to protect me from myself.
I cannot evaluate my own mental health and voluntarily choose not to own a gun knowing that owning a gun makes a higher risk for suicide.
I must have nameless, faceless Washington drones do that for me.
I am utterly, totally, helpless and incompetent.
“I’m done on the potty. Wipe me, Daddy.”
Seriously, this HAS to be a Swiftian satire piece. Please let it be so?

Don’t let her drive, either. Of course, if she is from NYC, she probably doesn’t… so don’t let her ride the subway or walk around near the speeding buses and taxis, either….

Obama gun order triples Cabinet agencies required to track guns
Section 1.e of his executive order released Wednesday adds State, Treasury, Interior, Agriculture, Energy, and Veterans Affairs. It reads: “For purposes of this memorandum, ‘Federal law enforcement agencies’ means the Departments of State, the Treasury, Defense, Justice, the Interior, Agriculture, Energy, Veterans Affairs, and Homeland Security, and such other agencies and offices that regularly recover firearms in the course of their criminal investigations as the President may designate.”

I don’t know, I figure the problem of people who can’t keep from shooting themselves will take care of itself without the government’s help. While I feel for their families, I see no reason to punish everyone else for their flaws. Governments that ban guns to reduce suicides find out that, while gun suicides may go down, overall suicides don’t, as suicidal people substitute other means. My mother was a firm believer in strict gun control. She took her own life with an overdose of prescription drugs. Maybe these people would prefer we took all medicine out of the hands of people to make sure that can’t happen.
As for some of the commenters there that felt they didn’t have the self-control to own a gun, by all means, don’t buy one. I deliberately didn’t learn to ride a motorcycle until I was 45 because I didn’t trust my self control enough, self-restraint is something everybody needs to exercise. Just don’t judge others by yourself.

Another person who wants to be a subject and to be ruled. She should find a country where they do that, we are a free people and seek to remain that way.

By all means, lady. Demand that they take away your right to drive a car while you’re at it. One day you might decide to drive off a bridge or into a building. Or own knives of any sort, lest you decide to slit your wrists.
