Whole Foods CEO: On second thought, ObamaCare isn’t “fascist”
“I made a poor word choice to describe our health care system, which I definitely regret. The term fascism today stirs up too much negative emotion with its horrific associations in the 20th century,” he said.
Mackey, in an interview with Fox News, reiterated that he used a “poor choice of words that resulted in a lot of blowback.”
He said he was trying to describe “government-controlled health care,” or “the opposite of free-enterprise capitalism.”

Yeah – I saw him walking this back this morning. BS. It is fascist. You may have offended fascists who don’t wish to be called fascists when you said it. But that doesn’t mean it’s not fascist.

Obamacare’s IPAB is plucked directly out of the Fascist Manifesto.
So, yes, Mr. Mackey, you were correct the first time.

Obama and his family s/b on Obama’care’.
If it’s that great why are they not on it?
No politician s/b allowed to be exempt, nor that they exempt anyone else, from the laws they push onto the free people.
Yes, “free” is the key word.

Wow. I guess we add “fascism” the list of perfectly good words with an appropriate meaning that conservatives can’t use anymore because it might offend a liberal, but liberals can use inappropriately and erroneously at any time. That list is getting pretty damn long.
Amazing that the left, through political correctness and feigned offense, continues to do the same thing to the 1A that they want to do the 2A. Kinda fascist if you ask me …

While Mackey may have had to pull back on using the word “fascist” to describe Obamacare, he still is in favor of market-based solutions, as he was when he wrote in this opinion piece for the WSJ in August, 2009:
He then went on to list eight reforms that closely match what Republicans were talking about at the time.

He caught a lot of flack from the left when that WSJ piece came out, too.
Reno_Dave on January 18, 2013 at 1:38 PM
I agree with you, but since he really only walked back on his usage of the word and not what prompted him to correctly use the word in the first place, it’s not a big deal to me.
What’s funny to me is seeing superficial idiots on the Left touting his walkback as some kind of victory!

Or Sukarno-ism. After all, Barky always dreamt of becoming a new Sukarno. It’s a shame he couldn’t have stayed in Indonesia where he belongs.
But the regular “fascism” still works perfectly well to describe the Indonesian Imbecile’s perversion of America and it elicits all the correct associations.
ThePrimordialOrderedPair on January 18, 2013 at 1:40 PM
Uh, I think he’s saying that they’re fascist but he’ll use a different term that means the same thing since people have a hizzy when the word fascist is in play.

Which is why it is bad. Time for influential people to call a spade a spade. The pussy-footing favors the bad guys, because it softens the image of what they’re actually doing.

He wants less government involvement in health care then touts the Swiss system which forces individuals to buy health insurance.
Mark1971 on January 18, 2013 at 1:44 PM
No, that’s not what he said. If you read the article, he says “…in fascism the means of production are still owned by private individuals but they’re controlled by the government. And what’s happening.” He only says that there’s so much baggage associated with that word (unless the liberal media (BIRM) is talking about GWB), that he should have used another phrase.
Another example of shoddy Hot Air headlining.
RoadRunner on January 18, 2013 at 1:56 PM
How do you believe it would have benefitted him if he had continued to use the word? Who do you think he reaches by saying it?
I am no fan of PC, but as a businessman, he realizes that not every way of expressing an opinion is equal.

Pregnant women in one southwestern Pennsylvania town will soon need to look elsewhere to deliver their babies, after a local hospital announced it will end the practice in March — blaming ObamaCare in part for the decision.

He was technically right, Obamacare/Romneycare are fascist, but I can understand why he would back away from it, he has a company to run.

Exactly. Tens of thousands of people could be have anything happen to them from being harassed to losing friends to losing their jobs if he’s not careful. His personal feelings HAVE to take a backseat most of the time.
And I would not be surprised if got an anonymous note/call/email saying “Remember Chick-Fil-A?”

FloatingRock and MelonCollie touched upon why I don’t expect from a businessman like Mackey what I do from GOP politicians like Boehner. Mackey has a different responsibility regarding diplomatic usage of language, which is why his walkback doesn’t concern me much.
