Roll Call
Tom Cole: It’s time for the Redskins to drop their offensive name
“Come on. This is the 21st century. This is the capital of political correctness on the planet,” he said. “It is very, very, very offensive. This isn’t like warriors or chiefs. It’s not a term of respect, and it’s needlessly offensive to a large part of our population. They just don’t happen to live around Washington, D.C.”
He noted there is precedent for changing a name: The Washington Bullets changed its name to the Wizards out of sensitivity to the high rate of murders in the city. Other offensive ethnic terms attached to team names would not be tolerated, Cole said, so neither should this.

I support this idea. Let liberals choke on their own political correctness. Hope they get a name as equally stupid as the Wizards.

I’m pretty sure my 1/32 Native American heritage entitles me to say “NO SHUT UP GO AWAY FOREVER”

BTW, a squad of lankey black men pretending to be mages is insulting /offensive to both fat D&D geeks and actual wizards.
more like ROGUES amirite?
Jeddite on January 18, 2013 at 8:13 PM
I vote they change the name to “Honkies”, wear all white and hire John Gibson as head coach. None of 220 million Caucasian Americans would be offended- at least on the basis of race.
Or maybe “Rednecks”.
BKeyser on January 18, 2013 at 8:13 PM
Only if we can rename them to the Washington Elizabeth Warrens.

I like the name Redskins.

Just a thought, how about asking, you know, actual redskins what they thinks of the idea?

What is Elizabeth Warren’s opinion on this.
Maybe name them The Casinos?

He has a 97 ACU rating. It’s not like he’s some RINO. He is actually speaking about the name from the perspective of an ACTUAL native American. (Which he is).
Raquel Pinkbullet on January 18, 2013 at 8:26 PM
Ha, good one…better than “Broken promises”…
A more fitting name would be the Wannabe’s, since so many want to be Indian…watch the post, amazingly most everyone has some
Indian in them.

And I am also an ACTUAL native American, I was born and raised here, as were my parents…

So do what Stanford did, they changed from a the Indians, to the Cardinals…oh, btw, that’s cardinal as in a color, not bird.
They have no mascot…so call Redskins, Reds, or Skins…or call them “A moderate hue”, or to strike fear “Rainbows”…
right2bright on January 18, 2013 at 8:37 PM
What is up with this kind of stuff? We know that the formation of the United States as a bounded land territory came into being because Europeans killed, forcibly removed and broke treaty after treaty. These things are matters of historical record. Why not simply say “I approve of those actions” than deny their existence by claiming “we’re all Native Americans.” You can frame or contextualize the language all you want. There is a distinction between the people who lived here upon Europeans arrival, and Europeans. And you know who really believed that? The Europeans! Who came up with all kinds of ways of framing the people who were here as sub-human, from the fact that they did not wear clothes or wore different clothes, to their different notions of territoriality.
libfreeordie on January 18, 2013 at 8:38 PM
For context, and comparison, you need to read up on around two thousand years of European history. America may be exceptional, but it’s not unique.

Pal, we laugh at your pathetic attempt to invite yourself into every discussion as if you actually did half of what you claim…yeah, I know, you also marched with MLK, and sat next to Rosa Parks…and now you are suddenly a “doctor”…HAHAHAHAHA!!! you are a doctor, as I am the President of the United States…
A doctor of habitual lies and pathetic attempts to be relevant.

I thought they went with the Sequois, as in tree, because that’s their mascot at the games…great school, but like most universities, run by little people with little ideas…but great scholars, Thomas Sowell be one of the greats.
The name that almost won was the Stanford “Robber Barons” a jab at Leland Stanford the industrialist, it almost made it through but the administration, caught on.
right2bright on January 18, 2013 at 8:49 PM
Ah, that may explain it, thanks.
OldEnglish on January 18, 2013 at 8:49 PM
BFD. I’m a native American. I don’t care what the team from Washington is called.
Maybe you meant American Aboriginals. It is more accurate, you know.
john1schn on January 18, 2013 at 8:52 PM
I wish you liberals would stop re-writing history.
The Native American peoples had no chance against the Europeans, because they were too busy waging endless wars against each other. In some cases they used the Europeans to fight their wars for them, which was a very short-sighted strategy.
Gelsomina on January 18, 2013 at 8:55 PM
And the Indians were at constant war with each other to obtain their land, and the Mexican’s were trying to claim the land from the Indians, and, and, and, and, and, and…Hey prof, you might want to pick up a history book and see how all of the countries were created…duhhhhh, and they were sub-human, many barely hanging on from extinction.
Plus they raped the land, destroyed much of the wooded timber, they were the first people to destroy an ecology…we came in time to save the land from their greedy “we own the land” attitude, as they almost single handed destroyed a country…every resource they got their hand in they abused…no wonder it was so easy to give them “fire water” and take back what should have never been theirs. They had no self control, no rule of law, they were exactly what they were…savages, killing anyone they considered an outsider, and the times they were a changin.
right2bright on January 18, 2013 at 8:56 PM
Call them the “Filth” cause it’s Washington.
john1schn on January 18, 2013 at 8:56 PM
There’s quite a bit of difference between European-Native relations in the 15th-18th centuries and the way things worked in the 19th century. In the former years, no one can claim any kind of innocence. In the later years, we’re pretty much the aggressors. Its fine, its not about condemnation its about being honest, and that includes being honest about what teams like The Redskins symbolize.

Yes, you jogged two other names that would fit, both describing their society:

xblade on January 18, 2013 at 10:21 PM
I can see how it could be construed as offensive. We don’t call the DC team the “Washington Darkies” for obvious reasons so “Washington Redskins” would seem to be a bit much as well. Yet even if its original meaning was intentionally meant to be offensive (I’m not saying that it was), I don’t think it’s perceived by many today as being so. Some American Indians are quite proud of the name, others not so much. Words do change their meaning over time. Eh, I’m not worked up about this much one way or the other. Yet if we are going to change the name, how about the Fighting Whities? I personally love that name and the history behind it…
