Iran is the #1 strategic defence challenge right now, and therefore Hagel’s views on Iran are the most relevant to his confirmation as SecDef.

I don’t know what Obama is thinking in that head of his, but the SIGNAL that this is sending, is that of “I’m picking a secretary of defence who has been against Iranian sanctions, attack on Iran’s nuke installations, the surge in Iraq, and has had a testy relationship with Israel”.

The mullahs in Iran would view this as a relief and continue to develop their nuclear weapons capability.
