Gun control’s Potemkin village
One thing hasn’t changed: The agenda includes mostly measures that will have little or no effect on the problems they are supposed to address. They are Potemkin remedies—presentable facades with empty space behind them. …
But the most notable ones fall into three categories. In the category of “useless” is the ban on “assault weapons,” which has been tried before with no evident effect. The administration is fond of demonizing a style of firearm that the gun industry likes to glamorize.
What they are talking about, though, are ordinary rifles tricked out and blinged up to resemble something else: military arms designed for the battlefield. The “weapons of war” Obama wants to ban do nothing that other legal weapons won’t do just as quickly and just as destructively. …
In the “probably useless” realm is a ban on ammunition magazines holding more than 10 rounds, which was part of the 1994 assault weapons ban. A mass shooter can overcome the restriction by carrying multiple magazines or multiple guns—as many of them do anyway. The notion that an attacker can be subdued when he stops to reload works better in movies than in real life, where it is virtually unknown.

No it wouldn’t.
The dubious statistic of guns that avoided background checks — which is actually 36 percent — comes from a small 251-person survey on gun sales two decades ago, very early in the Clinton administration. Most of the survey covered sales before the Brady Act instituted mandatory federal background checks in early 1994.

True. To expect evil men to obey laws just because more laws are enacted is, itself, lawlessness. Worse, it is wickedness because the statists don’t really see Lanza and Loughner as the problem; they’re an asset to their cause.
To the statist, YOU – the quiet, law-abiding ‘bitter clinger’ – are the problem that needs elimination. Lanza and Loughner are mere victims of YOUR stubborn bitter clinging.
Hypocrisy, lawlessness and wickedness in the highest places. Sign of the times.

Several points that commenters often miss, including the author of this piece.
1) The Second Amendment is not about hunting, but about holding an abusive government in check.
2) Historically, most hunding weapons are surplus or derivitives of military weapons. What do you think the pioneers shot their game with, a bb gun? Almost all the long guns that the gun control people are willing to accept have Mauser action – you know, the one that killed a million allied troops at the Somme and in the Argonne.
3) The government gave and sold M1 Garands and M1 carbines to the American public to encourage self defense and marksmanship.
4) To get these turned back in, the Clinton assault gun ban defined any rifle with a bayonet stud as an assault gun, How’s that again, the black panthers in Philadelphia can stab and slash anyone the want without fear of recourse, but if I have a rifle with a bayonet stud on it, I better not nick someone with the stud. I guess it is better that I shoot them?
5) Virtually all “automatics” automatic pistols are automatic only in their reloading. They are all semi-automatic in their firing – one trigger pull, one bullet.
I think that before any politician can talk about or vote on weapons restrictions, they must be forced to go through a basic training marksman course, on post, Army and Marines only. This is what we get after allowing the marxists to disarm us and make our children pacifist dummys.
