Obama’s new frame: Gun rights versus the right to life
I can’t remember a time when “gun rights” — the rights of people to buy, own, and carry pretty much any gun and in many cases any number of guns they want — did not dominate debates about gun policy. The phrase has been part of the political lexicon for what seems like decades.
President Obama turned that argument in an interesting direction, away from the Second Amendment and toward rights and themes at the core of other foundational documents, as he unveiled his package of gun proposals. The Declaration of Independence, the First Amendment, and the Gettysburg Address all made appearances in a speech that cast a new and different meaning on another familiar political phrase, the right to life. …
Obama did not leave out the part of the Declaration about Americans being “endowed by our Creator with certain inalienable rights that no man or government can take away from us,” as he put it. But he added: “As we’ve also long recognized, as our founders recognized, that with rights come responsibilities. Along with our freedom to live our lives as we will comes an obligation to allow others to do the same. We don’t live in isolation. We live in a society, a government of, and by, and for the people.” That final phrase comes from Abraham Lincoln’s impassioned Gettysburg Address. …
“There will be pundits and politicians and special-interest lobbyists publicly warning of a tyrannical, all-out assault on liberty,” he said. In fact that strain of thinking and rhetoric is already full-throated. How effectively Obama can defuse all the “don’t tread on me” bombast with the words of Jefferson, Madison, and Lincoln is unclear, but it can’t hurt to remind people that gun rights were not the only rights the founders had in mind way back when.

This should be utterly transparent. There is nothing in Obama’s past to suggest he has a respect for life. Zip. Zero. Zilch. Nada. But we’re supposed to believe he has more concern for children now than he ever did unborn children?

Well, that commentary was typical leftist tripe. Take a bunch of familiar words and phrases, conflate them ,twist their meanings and present them as a justification for statist overreach.
Was quite audacious, even for Jugears, to actually use “right to life”. Actually a little frightening too; that kind of attempted redefinition and twisting is very stalinesque.

Considering that we’re coming up on the 40th anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that’s resulted in the loss of over 55 million Americans, that was incredibly cynical and disgusting.

Obama doesn’t give a flying chit about the “right to life”.
This whole attack on the 2nd amendment is more political grandstanding. He knows actual legislation isn’t going anywhere. He just wants to dance on the graves of the kids at Sandy Hook and use their deaths as a bludgeon against his political enemies. He’ll continue to use the kids deaths to demonize the NRA and demagogue the republicans for not “caring” about the children. His ultimate goal is to weaken the NRA’s influence and try to make pariahs out of the republicans for supporting the 2nd.

Yea, right to life…that’s why he’s making taxpayers fund abortions. Crystal clear to me. This guy is unbelievable in what he’ll spew out whether it is hypocritical or not….just look over there at the shiny thing.
When do babies in the womb 8 or 9 months get their “right to life” I wonder.

You, Mr. President, may blow me.

This is where he will run into problems. He can’t afford for the majority of people in this country to become familiar with our founding documents. They would then realize all the other unconstitutional crap he has already pulled. Also, his voters are very stupid and don’t know who Jefferson, Madison and Lincoln are, which could pose a problem.

Especially since all that “don’t tread on me bombast” comes from Jefferson, Madison and Lincoln. That’s some needle to thread, eh, moonbat?

I really hope the Democrats try to steal the “Right to Life” mantra.
EVERY conversation they do it in will immediately be about abortion. Every. Single. One.

That sounds kind of like the deal Cubans get, if they can make it to land.

Who’s right to life? The criminal assaulting you? I find it a real stretch that one can justify the restrictions on guns as a pro life one. I know what they are trying to say but it just doesn’t cut it for me. I just don’t get this double standard that every life is sacred except for those in the womb.

This is such a fresh and cerebral tactic! You don’t see the same trope trotted out by the low-information peons on Facebook, Reddit, or in the comments of any of the liberal rags at all!
This is brilliant!

In fact, Obama so strongly supports the Right to Life, he defunded Planned Parenthood and ordered a Federal investigation into political connections between PP and the Democratic Party.

The liberal slogan: “Let’s all kill babies and coddle criminals!”
The thing we must always keep in mind is that liberalism is not JUST stupidity and craziness. It’s millions of people collectively being as intentionally perverse as they possibly can be.
That’s because liberalism is The Cult Of The Ego. The goal is not to BE smart and good; that takes hard work and risk. The goal of liberals is to FEEL brilliant and Godlike. That is literally childishly simple; and, at least from a purely subjective point of view, it entails no risk of ever feeling wrong.
The way to do that is to (A) always agree with the perceived concensus (i.e., the media) and (B) collectively believe things that will never make sense to any normal person. Then, vioula: inside their own heads, the stupidest and craziest people in the world magically become the smartest and most sane; and they get to treat the people who make the world work as the worthless losers of society.

Framing it so that the two rights are somehow opposed seems rather dishonest. If the fear is that one may use an instrument to take away another’s right to life, then the specifics of that instrument (or even if an instrument is involved) are irrelevant. The primary concern is that the right to life is being denied, and the laws should reflect that by outlawing murder, not possession of particular instruments.

Right to life… unless of course it’s the trigger of a vacuum cleaner in a Planned Parenthood center. Then it’s all okie dokie. Nothing to see here.
Hypocrites.
