Why is Obama spending so much political capital on gun control?
But the gun lobby has been explicit that it won’t be giving in. The fight will consume valuable political oxygen, perhaps all of what’s available to a reelected president whose party controls only half of Capitol Hill.
That means other ambitious subject areas – immigration reform, energy and environmental policy, a major infrastructure initiative – will have to wait. Moreover, the coming brinksmanship over spending and budget issues could further poison the chances of action, potentially grinding Washington to an effective halt.
President George W. Bush found out the hard way that political capital doesn’t last long into a second term, even if the president tries to spend it with a friendly Congress. Bush’s push for Social Security reform not only went nowhere, it helped sow the seeds of the Democratic takeover of Congress in 2006.
This fight over guns has the potential to be more than that for Obama, though. After a campaign devoid of much inspiration, a passionate debate that gets to the heart of the nation’s culture may be what the recently reelected president needs.

He’s got big plans.
The Rogue Tomato on January 14, 2013 at 3:01 PM
He is not spending any capital. It is a diversion from the rest of running government to get us to the point where the debt ceiling will be a crisis that must be done overnight. Basically, he is building political capital at the moment.
astonerii on January 14, 2013 at 3:05 PM
Because the yellow patches are not ready yet?
faraway on January 14, 2013 at 3:06 PM
As usual, the capital he’s spending isn’t his. He’s a lame duck and won’t run for public office ever again. He’s just sitting back and spending all the other dimocrat’s political capital.
Flange on January 14, 2013 at 3:06 PM
I theorize that he has 2 reasons:
1) He needs to distract the nation from the most pressing domestic issues of the day. Namely the insane amount of debt we’re piling, the clusterfark that is Obamacare, and the lousy economy. Guns and immigration allow him to do that.
2) He wants to limit the distribution of guns as much as possible in the increasingly likely event that the economy crashes in the next few years and civil unrest ensues. People always say we’re on track to become Greece. I disagree. At least the Greeks don’t have 300 million guns amongst their citizens to worry about.

Indeed, on both.

Good points. I would also add that he plans on doing a lot via EO which doesn’t spend any political capital nor the approval of Congress.
Dr. Frank Enstine on January 14, 2013 at 3:16 PM
He’s so arrogant that it doesn’t occur to him that political capital is limited. I mean, GWB didn’t get it either, and there have been times when he has shown a great deal of self-effacement. Obama is a total stranger to the idea.
INC on January 14, 2013 at 3:17 PM
nor need the approval of Congress.
I guess it was a bad day to give up glue sniffing.
Dr. Frank Enstine on January 14, 2013 at 3:17 PM
Here is hoping we get the senate in 2014 and impeach Obama.
LOL, like the Republican would ever defend the Constitution of the United States of America… They want to defile it as much as the Democrats the moment they get back into power!
astonerii on January 14, 2013 at 3:19 PM
I thought you meant decrease the approval of congress. Since they ir fingerprints would not be on any EO…
astonerii on January 14, 2013 at 3:20 PM
I also don’t think Obama doesn’t realize that the changes in people’s paychecks will sour some of his voters.
The guy is a total narcissist. Narcissists are incapable of reading the handwriting on the wall until the Persians have breached the gate.

Nah,…instead you’ll get Pelosi back. The land asks for total demise. She won’t learn until it happens, when it will be too late.

Another voice from the Oppressive-Left that puts the LIE to the talking point that no one is out to destroy the 2nd amendment and Confiscate our guns:
BTW, are there any leftists out there that still try to traffic in that pantload of barack?
Galt2009 on January 14, 2013 at 3:24 PM
He’ll never realize it. He’ll even make another speech about how we should be thanking him.
The Rogue Tomato on January 14, 2013 at 3:26 PM
Indeed, how can you ‘Fundamentally’ transform a free nation into a Socialist purgatory and redistribute the wealth if the people can resist your benevolent rule?
Galt2009 on January 14, 2013 at 3:28 PM
Sounds like some reporter buys Obama’s “above the fray” act.
He’s an ideologue.

He just likes to spend.

This. And stirring the pot is his way of getting there. Manufacture the crisis, then exploit it.
petefrt on January 14, 2013 at 3:36 PM
It’s actually in Obama’s interest to burn ALL of his political capital on getting rid of guns.
If he can disarm the populace – no matter what the political cost – there is literally nothing to stop him from doing whatever he wants.
The only roadblock between Obama and the dictatorship he craves (see: China’s government, Obama’s comments on) is an armed nation.
He knows it. We know it.

Obama is a fraud, he bets on bad hands, in fact over bids on bad hands, he thinks he can make it all up and lie his way out of any fraud he does.
Call the fraud hand, he’s got a pair of 4′s and We The People do not need a pair of Kings , we have a stright flush in our hands.
Call his ass.

Here is why:
”All political power comes from the barrel of a gun. The Communist Party must command all the guns, that way, no guns can ever be used to command the party.”

It isn’t like it’s his money or anything.

The only thing that makes sense to me is that he thinks he can demoagogue the issue enough to split the House Republicans and get Democratic control of the House again.
Still doesn’t look like it will work.
Maybe we’re overthinking it. Maybe he just is that arrogant.
