Maryland to gun owners: We want your fingerprints
Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley will seek to institute some of the nation’s strictest gun-licensing requirements, ban assault weapons and restrict visitor access to schools in one of the most expansive government responses sought to last month’s school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Perhaps most controversially, O’Malley (D) will ask the General Assembly to force prospective gun owners to provide fingerprints to state police, complete a hands-on weapon-familiarization and gun-safety course, and undergo a background check to be licensed…
“This looks like crass opportunism from politicians who want gun control,” said House Minority Leader Anthony J. O’Donnell (R-Calvert), who would need to peel off support from several Democrats to derail O’Malley’s plans.
“The reality is Martin O’Malley is trying to get to the left of Cuomo in New York because he wants to run for president in 2016,” O’Donnell said.

Gun owners need to tell Maryland kiss our asses this is what we want. Time for a Mandatory Federal Firearms Law, Enter the Affordable Firearms Act.

Some psychotropic drug-fueled maniac is going to shoot up some “gun free” zone, this idiot thinks that having fingerprints on file is going to stop them?
Rebar on January 14, 2013 at 2:43 PM
Hey, start with the prisons, then go into the gang-bang areas. I mean, you’re talking all gun owners, right? Or is it just the legal gun owners.
What a jack-ass

Gun owners to Maryland: You can have our fingerprints after you pry our dead, cold fingers from our firearms.
Bitter Clinger on January 14, 2013 at 2:45 PM
Once again, is the identity of any of these mass shooters ever in doubt, such that there is some reason to compare fingerprints?

New business opportunity! Selling latex stick-ons of Martin O’Malley’s fingerprints.

Didn’t Frank Duntz find out that 87.2% members of the National Recording Association wanted gun owners to be treated like common criminals?

Let’s just drop that word for accuracy.

Take them from a crime scene. If you can’t find them at a crime scene, then piss off.

My goodness it appears that the governors of some states are trying to out-do each other on their krap gun grabbing agenda?

They know this won’t prevent crime. As with the national registry, the endgame is the resulting chilling effect. This idea smacks of Sunstein.

i’m in line after all the criminals.. I’m sure they will rush in to get fingerprinted once this law is signed. /s

Great. As if my state could get much worse…
Gatsu on January 14, 2013 at 3:02 PM
Why would Gov. O’Malley do that sort of thing to so many of his loyal constituents and voters? Next thing you’ll say he ought to try and get prints off of dead people.

where were you when they came for MD gun owner fingerprints?
gatorboy on January 14, 2013 at 3:05 PM
They take full finger prints as well as full trigger finger when you get a Class A permit in MA. Class A includes hand guns but may not include CC.
Dr. Frank Enstine on January 14, 2013 at 3:12 PM
they already do this in hawaii, too. i bet in CA as well…

Texas demands your prints if you want a CHL even if they are kicking around the system anyway.
It isn’t appropriate but then neither is having to go through the CHL-CCL-CWP process.

I’ll say one thing for O’Malley: he certainly is effective at driving Marylanders out of Maryland. I have never seen so many Baltimore Ravens bumper stickers and hats here in Lancaster County PA in my life.
DRayRaven on January 14, 2013 at 3:34 PM
Fine, as soon as they start collecting fingerprints from voters and journalists.

Fingerprint welfare recipients and women who have had abortions first.
The right to gun ownership existed in the Bill of Rights long before the right to an abortion was discovered there. I guess it’s only a matter of time before the right to welfare is discovered, though it apparently exists as a practical matter.
BuckeyeSam on January 14, 2013 at 4:22 PM
They’re more concerned about who has a gun than they are about who votes. Way more concerned.

right2bright on January 14, 2013 at 4:35 PM
Right now, background checks for handguns in Maryland are taking three weeks or longer. The normal waiting period is seven days.
In fact, it’s almost impossible to buy any kind of firearm in Maryland, because the dealers are all sold out. One of the FFLs in Montgomery county had a few surplus P228s and some .22 target pistols last week, and pretty much nothing else. There’s also a Dick’s that has a few .22s and shotguns.
Judging from the way people are buying, I think this backfires in MD. Maybe not in Baltimore, but I think the rest of the state is going to be fairly unhappy about it.
