It’s time for Democrats and Republicans to get a divorce
Yes, every situation in Washington, no matter how seemingly trivial, does evolve into a fight. Just look at the recent fight over a couple of billion dollars worth of pork in the recent Hurricane Sandy relief bill.
Yes, both parties do continually refer to hurtful events in the past. The Robert Bork hearings, the Justice Thomas confirmation, President Clinton’s impeachment, the Bush tax hikes, the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, Obamacare, etc., etc. Not an hour goes by in Washington without both parties dredging up past partisan fights.
The art of compromise? Gone. Forging a path together that is acceptable to both? Hasn’t happened in at least a decade. And shared “moral, ethical, or lifestyle values?” Not anymore.
According to Pew, the gap in political values between Republicans and Democrats has never been higher and has grown worse than the gaps between other groups. Since 1987, Pew has annually asked Americans 48 values-based questions (e.g. “Do you think that most poor people in the United States are people who work but can’t earn enough money, or people who don’t work?”).

The Bush tax hikes? Does he mean the Obama tax hikes?

HW’s tax hikes
dforston on January 13, 2013 at 9:40 PM
I think he meant the “Read my lips” tax hike.
Flange on January 13, 2013 at 9:41 PM
Unless he’s talking about the first Bush in which case it’s not an example of partisan fight but an inner party fight. Democrats weren’t upset by the Bush tax hikes.
Buddahpundit on January 13, 2013 at 9:42 PM
It is funny how the media is now rewriting history and making Democrats the low tax party. It was the same way they were able to blot out their anti-Civil Rights and racist history.
melle1228 on January 13, 2013 at 9:44 PM
Probably meant “cuts”. It’s chronological that way.
theperfecteconomist on January 13, 2013 at 9:45 PM
HW’s tax hikes were partisan in that it was the democrats who wanted the taxes hikes, got Bush to sign them, then turned around and used the “read my lips” ad against him.
Flange on January 13, 2013 at 9:48 PM
We have a problem when billions of dollars of pork are “seemingly trivial”.
theperfecteconomist on January 13, 2013 at 9:51 PM
You mean the one on the charges that got him disbarred in the Supreme Court, and was only stopped along party lines? Yeah, that Supreme Court was really partisan back then.
I agree that there needs to be total, all-out war against the liberals and the MSM (BIRM). But our current crop of politicians are not up to it.

Serves him right for being bipartisan with Democrats. You’d think a lesson could be learned from that.
Buddahpundit on January 13, 2013 at 9:57 PM
Several lesson really, and I suspect that in another generation or two the GOP will figure some of them out.

I understand the Internet copyright and censorship legislation was approved unanimously. So there’s that.

FIFY.

No sir, in fact they down right shot a load over it and then used it against him in the 92 election. I hate dems but admire their ruthlessness. Well they aren’t really ruthless unless dealing with repubs—-other countries, lefty dictators are fine.
arnold ziffel on January 13, 2013 at 10:18 PM
Hey! That’s my dad and mom they’re talking about.
I remember the glory days pre-1996 when neither if them cared too much about politics.
JadeNYU on January 13, 2013 at 10:23 PM
Actually, it is time for the Republican party to come out of the closet and admit that they are the exact same political gender as the Democrats they are married to.
astonerii on January 13, 2013 at 10:27 PM
We were doing okay until the progs hijacked the Democrat party. Until then, there were largely shared values and a shared vision for America, with the main differences being over the means to that end.
Now the progs, led by the red diaper community organizing punk in the WH, have a foreign ideology, adversarial values, and the dream of radically transforming America into the antithesis of its traditional self.
There is no compromise with an adversary who wants to eliminate you. Not just divorce, but war.
petefrt on January 13, 2013 at 10:32 PM
Outstanding. In the past we could agree to disagree. They want us gone and the same here—-only more painful to them.
arnold ziffel on January 13, 2013 at 10:43 PM
We get the house.
HitNRun on January 13, 2013 at 10:45 PM
Both parties have been turning commie since HW Bush. The Republicans are just slightly behind the Dems.
Actually, it started long before that, but we got a nice break with Reagan.
The Rogue Tomato on January 13, 2013 at 10:57 PM
Nope, he’s talking about how the Democrats talked GHWB into doing the tax hike then blamed him in 1992 on a tax raiser and a liar. Typical leftist strategy.

Hope they’ll share custody of their ‘No Labels‘ baby.
Ladysmith CulchaVulcha on January 13, 2013 at 11:16 PM
Please, let’s split it up and see how long Democratland lasts.
WisCon on January 14, 2013 at 12:26 AM
Both are the party of higher taxes. The republicans just agreed with dems that our citizens are not taxed enough. Why would they divorce?
