Study: Diet soda linked to depression
The study researchers analyzed information from more than 263,900 U.S. adults ages 50 to 71 who answered questions about their beverage consumption between the years 1995 and 1996. About 10 years later (from 2004 to 2006), the same people were asked if a doctor had diagnosed them with depression since the year 2000.
People who regularly drank four or more cans of any type of soda a day were 30 percent more likely to have received a diagnosis of depression than people who did not drink soda. The risk of depression was especially high for people who drank diet soda — a 31 percent increased risk compared to a 22 percent increased risk for those who drank regular soda, the researchers said.
Those who drank four or more cans of diet fruit drinks were 51 percent more likely to be diagnosed with depression compared to those who did not drink diet fruit drinks.

Maybe it’s the ignorance that led them to believe that “diet” meant healthy that is also causing their depression.

Maybe lots of people drink diet soda because they are self conscious about their weight thus the source of the depression?

That is the choice with me. The only thing that depresses me is what is going on from the wh/dc!

I think Diet Coke tastes better than regular Coke. Does that make me depressed?

Clearly, diet sodas in cups larger than 4oz should be banned. And fruit drinks should just be illegal.

I’ve had 3 non diet sodas today…I’d better stop.
My experiment with no-cal sweeteners was with a couple of small bottles of Mio with electrolytes – as a replacement for Gatorade.
The drink wasn’t bad, but I felt empty after that. A little later, I went to the fridge to grab a soda. A couple of hours later, another soda.

The good news is that fat, happy, welfare recipients can buy full sugar drinks and snacks.
Food Stamps are a wonderful thing. The food companies love them, too.
Buy junk food for your “friends and family”. He//, sell the stamps and buy beer.
It’s all good, ‘ cause Big MO don’t care about the Homies. She knows they ain’t buying arugula….they’re buying garbage….. for their pals and for the usual dinner of Fritos.
Well, it ain’t Wagyu Beef. That’s for the Ultimate Welfare Recipients …. BO and MO, that is. The rest of the homies chow down on junk, but it’s OK because they know someone else is paying for it.
Ain’t no big deal, right?

I thought it caused global warming.

That’s a lot. There must have been data collected in such a large study that compared those who drank no soda to those that drank 1-2 cans–a more typical amount.

Any health study that still regards BMI as anything but voodoo science should not be taken seriously.

Which is the cause and which is the effect?
Is it really that people that in a depression drink more sugary drinks to feel better, not that drinking sugary drinks make them depressive.
And the non-depressive people are more active, thus stay way from the calories and head for the coffee?
And what about us tea and water only drinkers?

I wouldn’t be surprised if Nutrasweet had something to do with it. Nutrasweet is of da debil.

Or maybe Sacchrine Blue.

They surveyed people age 50 and 71. What was the percentage of people 10 years later who were dead? And of those, how many drank the soda with sugar?
An Objectivist on January 10, 2013 at 7:57 PM
. . . cause alive with a self-reported history of a previous depression diagnosis arguably beats dead.
An Objectivist on January 10, 2013 at 8:02 PM
So how much more gubmint money got flushed down the toilet funding this pointless piddling study that no one will remember when next week’s pointless piddling study comes out telling us that people who drink diet sodas are happier than everybody else?
