The GOP faces irrelevance unless it changes on guns or something
None of these ideas strike me as out of the mainstream. None would impact the ability of law-abiding citizens to buy firearms and participate in gun-related hunting, recreation, or self-defense. And while it may be a debatable point about the extent to which any or all of these ideas would have changed the circumstances or outcomes of any of the horrifying massacres in our recent history, if the ideas are reasonable and don’t limit legitimate activities, then why not consider them? Under what circumstance would you need more than 10 rounds of ammunition in a clip?
And yes, we need to look all the contributing factors to violence in our society, including mental health interventions and violent media. But recently 11,000 Americans lost their lives in gun-related deaths in a year. During the same period in Japan, 11 died. And last time I looked, they play videogames too.
Unless the GOP comes out with a proactive plan that has some appearance of responding to recent events, then it continues to play defense and digs deeper the hole it has been digging for itself in recent years. On issues where the physics are moving irrevocably forward, like immigration, gay rights, and guns, the Republican Party continues to look backward. And backward is a sure path toward irrelevance.

To a “No Labels” douche like McKinnon, being seen to “do something” in reaction to a news story, whether it’s productive or not (hell, especially if it’s counter-productive) is the abiding principle. No bigger waste of space than a “moderate” GOP consultant-type.

We don’t need pornography either. Why isn’t that being taken away?
Is “pornography” mentioned in the Constitution?

Unless the GOP decides to be a strong supporter of the 2nd Amendment, then this country could be facing troubled times that words alone won’t solve.
For a person from a country that has the HIGHEST violent crime rate among the whole of the E.U., you’d think Morgan would be grateful to be in a country that has one of the LOWEST violent crime rates.
You know, other than in places like Chicago where law abiding citizens aren’t permitted to properly exercise their Rights as recognized by the 2nd Amendment.

These people don’t get it, the 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting or even self defense, except from your own or a foreign government.

It’s alway the GOP, or the Right, gun owners, Christians or other religious folks (not the Muslims, mind), and others who disagree with the who need to “evolve” or otherwise get in line.
Funny, that.

C’mere, let me axe you a question. How has your advice in previous electons worked out? Why don’t you just go polish Begala’s forehead and wash his balls?

Does that include gun suicides?

Someone needs to do a demo video for these morons to show the insignificant difference of firing 50 rounds of 9mm from 3 magazines and 5 magazines. Might add all of 3 seconds to the firing time.
michaelo on January 9, 2013 at 10:49 PM
You’d think if this were an issue on which the GOP was out of the mainstream, it would have come up in the election or something.
Did it come up in the election? Did Obama win election promising to grab guns? Did Sandy Hook happen before the election? It’s so hard to tell for the media: these events happened “over 100″ days ago. Probably.
This might be the dumbest sentence on the issue yet. If an idea is “reasonable,” why not consider it? What the heck does that even mean? The eat-your-broccoli proposition of last summer’s healthcare debate would be reasonable. A policeman searching your property when he knows you’re up to something is reasonable.
In a free nation with a government constrained by a constitution, there needs to be an impetus for a law, not a lack of suitable objection against it.
I say it only might be the dumbest sentence, because there is this:
So leaving aside the completely nonsensical comparison of gun rights – which are a fundamental civil right and more popular than they’ve been in the era of polling – to other issues, the Republican Party needs to surrender their defense of gun rights where they hold the majority view because of some hackneyed metaphysical notions of “forward” politics and linear history myths from an 8th Grader. Got it.

At least he didn’t run with the 30000 stat that includes suicides.

If you first have a limit of 10, it’ll morph into a limit of 5 and the a limit of 3.

Would the Oppressives have preferred that women and her children been dead today on account of their stupid ideas?
Galt2009 on January 9, 2013 at 11:13 PM
Ha.
Q: Why do the media call Mark McKinnon a Republican operative?
A: Because Republicans don’t consult with him anymore.
Sounds much more like double agent he is, now.
Dusty on January 9, 2013 at 11:17 PM
Operative word with these idiots is “appearance”, not results; otherwise, he would have written something like “…plan that provides for intervention with the at risk mentally ill…”
AH_C on January 9, 2013 at 11:21 PM
Yes. Definitely yes.
Slowburn on January 9, 2013 at 11:23 PM
1. Because the extent “to which any or all of these ideas would have changed the circumstances or outcomes of any of the horrifying massacres in our recent history” is not just “a debatable point,” but THE point.
2. Because considering gun control arguments presupposes that the ideas can even be held to be reasonable, in light of section 1, listed above.
In short, piss off. Passing useless laws to get your self-righteous rocks off only adds to regulatory confusion and does nothing aside from satisfy your seemingly masturbatory impulse to feel morally superior to those you disagree with.

Under what circumstances do you need a car that can go faster than 100mph?
Under what circumstances do you need a mancave, complete with home theater?
Under what circumstances do you need a HD big screen in every room?
Under what circumstances do you need the latest smart phone every 6 months?
Under what circumstances do you need a second home/car or more?
Under what circumstances do you need a 4-figure bicycle when 3 will do to be green?
Under what circumstances do you need a 6-figure piece of jewelry, when 4 will do?
Under what circumstances do you need a waygu steak when black angus will do
See? We can play this pursuit of happiness game all day long.

Mr. McKinnon should heed the widom of Mark Twain and his old saw:
“It is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and remove all doubt.”
Jack Deth on January 10, 2013 at 5:32 AM
So what he’s saying is “When the GOP becomes a second Democrat party.”
Very few firearms take “clips” … a moonclip for a few revolvers and the M1 Garand. Heck, some even take “belts.”
The rest of them that have removable ammunition container and it is called a magazine.
Yeesh!
BTW, check: http://GunFacts.info for vetted information on those oft-misused stats.
GunPolicy is just another anti-gun hack site, right up there with Brady and VPC.

Why don’t these morons just come right out and say, “Unless the republicans become democrats and completely embrace the liberal/leftest agenda they are doomed.”. It would save having to read the trash they push off as reasonable analysis.

Uhhhh, until about a month ago Obama’s stated position on gun rights (as put forth in the 2008 campaign) was pretty much the same as the NRA’s. So what “physics” could this guy possibly be talking about?
