Politicians love simplistic answers that appear rational at first glance, but are actually intended to avoid discussing or dealing with the real problem.

AKA, excuses.

Excellent example from an old Republican administration: Saying it wasn’t really necessary to depose Saddam at the end of the first Gulf War because his enemies would do it for us. Then we had to go back and finish the business.

And then there was Neville Chamberlain declaring “Peace in our time” because Hitler promised he would stop with Czechoslovakia. Which leads to one of my favorite Winston Churchill quotes, “”You were given the choice between war and dishonor. You chose dishonor and you will have war.”
