Dem senator introduces bill that would require background checks for ammunition
Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) introduced legislation on Tuesday that would require background checks for buying gun ammunition.
It’s currently illegal to sell ammunition to fugitives, felons and people suffering from mental disorders. However, while background checks are required for selling firearms, they are not required for selling ammunition. Blumenthal’s legislation would require background checks for selling ammunition as well.
“Ammunition sales should be subject to the same legal requirements as firearm sales — instant background checks using the FBI’s national database,” Blumenthal said in a statement. “There is no rational reason why a person can walk into a store, fill their shopping cart with hundreds of rounds of ammo, pay up, and walk out without so much as giving their name.”

The government seems really worried about citizens having arms all of a sudden.

There’s a bill that’s gonna go real far. These guys are hell bent on screwing their party in the next cycle.

Hey look – more politicians ignoring all the evidence of what actually solves the problems they pretend they’re trying to solve and instead propose blindly ideological solutions that strip law abiding citizens of freedom.

Betcha the same senator thinks it’s wrong to ask a voter to show an ID. “The ballot is stronger than the bullet” ya know.
apostic on January 9, 2013 at 11:43 AM
Are there background checks for buying powder? Or brass? Or lead? How about drill presses, lathes and grinders?
GWB on January 9, 2013 at 11:49 AM
On the issues of guns. Any here from NC and if so have you read or heard of this? I have no idea if true or not, or if the radio show is legit?

Someone should tack on a voter ID clause as a rider. Better yet, a clause calling for background checks to vote.
CurtZHP on January 9, 2013 at 11:50 AM
It’s easy to regulate lawful citizens, it’s hard to actually solve problems. This way this useless politians can claim they “did their best for your children”.
NickelAndDime on January 9, 2013 at 11:53 AM
Hmm, I was just thinking it was about time to buy more ammo…
yubley on January 9, 2013 at 11:53 AM
The justification for this law is a mass hooting where the shooter expended around 100 rounds. That’s Richard Blumenthal logic for you.

How ’bout the Second Amendment?
SAZMD on January 9, 2013 at 11:58 AM
How about “I go to the range several times a month but only to the ‘ammo store’ once every couple months” as a reason?
Yeesh. Does he buy toilet paper one roll at a time?

so thoughtful of the ruling class to be concerned about us little people.. I suppose reloading your own will be banned soon as well.

Sure there is and it has nothing to do with self-defense, hunting, collecting, or sporting purposes.
/but i think you know that, dick.

No ’cause that’s rayciss or something.
roy_batty on January 9, 2013 at 12:03 PM
No offense, but I like the “mass hooting” typo. Sounds like art on a Queen album. (prolly not safe for work)
apostic on January 9, 2013 at 12:04 PM
Showing their ignorance again. If you filled a shopping cart with ammo, you wouldn’t have hundreds of rounds, you’d have thousands of rounds, and the damn thing would be too heavy to push.
More to the point, there’s a perfectly rational reason why a person can do that. BECAUSE THEY WANTED IT!
CurtZHP on January 9, 2013 at 12:05 PM

Also, boycott them. The old man turns in his grave. May they all go to Hades.

CurtZHP on January 9, 2013 at 12:20 PM
Yes, it’s called Freedom.
The second amendment was clearly written to hold the government in check.
So why should the Government have control on a check on it’s own power?
The restraint on an oppressive government power will be negated if the government controls that restraint.
Chip on January 9, 2013 at 12:23 PM
Instant, huh? Anyone who’s ever purchased a firearm, especially in the recent rush or around the holidays, knows that instant it is not.
Dead Hand Control on January 9, 2013 at 12:23 PM
The Walmart near my office suspended all ammo sales. The one near my house did not. Hmmm…
?
stvnscott on January 9, 2013 at 12:24 PM
This is starting to really piss me off – the Oppressives keep on flapping their collective gums that there are limits on our right of self-defense.
Well, don’t we ALREADY have a ton of limits on that right?
Haven’t we ALREADY reached a point where that right is being infringed?
Chip on January 9, 2013 at 12:26 PM
If people are going to have to go through that much trouble to buy ammo, then they’re just going to buy in bulk for the sake of convenience. If I have to go through a background check to buy ammo, I’d much rather go through 1 check for a case 1000 instead of 20 separate checks each time I want to buy a box of 50…
Shhh…don’t give them any more ideas. If they make it too much of a hassle to buy ammo, expect interest in reloading to surge.
Also, they already have a problem with straw purchasers of firearms; do they think they won’t also have a problem with straw buyers of ammo? Maybe the local crime lord can keep an ammunition reloader on retainer to circumvent the background checks.
JimLennon on January 9, 2013 at 12:32 PM
I’m starting to wonder if we’re gonna make it through four more years.
petefrt on January 9, 2013 at 12:35 PM
Then the Oppressives will just mandate HOW much you can buy as well.
Has anyone noticed that Democrats really don’t like the concept of Liberty?

The “help of the Attorney General? The guy that cannot answer questions about Fast and Furious or provide requested documents?

Men who would be gods.
I’m really getting tired of Bloomberg. He is just a freaking mayor. Who cares if it’s a big city. Why does he get a national stage and not the mayor of a city of 25000?
Basically who gives a crap about NY state other than those that live there. I think that the rest of the country should tell them to STFU and stop bothering the rest of the Union.
Dr. Frank Enstine on January 9, 2013 at 12:56 PM
Well, the Oppressives have always wanted a disarmed and enslaved America – El Presidente Downgrade just kept quite about until his re-selection was assured.
But you do have to ask the question – Why do they suddenly consider this to be a Crisis?
There have been other mass murders in self-defense denial zones before, what is different about this one?
Was there a magic number of kids that had to die (in Non- abortion cases) before they felt they could spring into action?
Chip on January 9, 2013 at 12:58 PM
Their recent tendency to joke about shooting gun owners and other political opponents is also getting really disturbing.
