Rick Perry’s second chance
If Texas GOP Gov. Rick Perry is serious about running again for president – he has said he might take another bite at the apple in 2016 – or even running for re-election in 2014, the business of rehabilitating his damaged political brand will begin in earnest Tuesday when the legislative session opens.
From a Houston Chronicle report:
The legislative session that opens Tuesday will give Gov. Rick Perry a chance to burnish his credentials if he chooses to make another run for president in 2016. …
“On the one hand, Reagan, Bush, McCain, and Romney all lost on their first nomination try, and they came back to fight and win another day. The problem for Perry is that he crossed a line from contender to punch line,” said University of New Hampshire political scientist Dante Scala. “My guess is that the window is closed for Perry.”

I think he’s as likely to get a second chance as Palin is.

What he needs to do is fight for independence.

I like some of the things Perry has done – Im a Texas resident – and hate others. Forcing stupid vaccinations that amazingly benefitted a family member financially, and his pushing through of the NAFTA super highway which has been grabbing peoples land since day one.
MoreLiberty on January 8, 2013 at 9:47 AM
Please. Palin quit less than 2/3 of the way through her first term. Perry barring health issues will complete 3 terms as governor of one of the largest states in the union. And it’s just been reported that unemployment has plummeted here while the government is running a huge surplus after slashing spending. If that’s not the ideal record for a fiscal conservative Republican Presidential candidate, I don’t know what is. He just needs to prepare better next time for the debates.

Rick Parody’s awesome. Gas jets and all…

I would like to see Perry take another crack at it.
Kataklysmic on January 8, 2013 at 9:48 AM
The best way for republicans to run for president is to not run for president during the next two years. The best way to run for president is to actually Function, Achieve something, Save something, Preserve something, Show wisdom, Make good choices, Help us out of this hole. If you do, then come with your hat in your hand. Rand Paul is absolutely annoying this week looking like he is running for president. Successful actions will speak louder than trips to Iowa, let’s see who does something for America in the next two years.
Fleuries on January 8, 2013 at 9:51 AM
I would love if he would give it another shot. I still think hands down he was the most qualified of any of the primary contenders.
Damn debates.

Y’know, I really like Perry. He so had my vote and if he tries again he’s likely to get it again. But I doubt he’ll win over the low information voters as long as the LSM already has a proven template to make him look stupid regardless of what comes out of his mouth. Same problem as Palin.
He just needs for every conservative to take over the LSM.
apostic on January 8, 2013 at 9:55 AM
I too think the window has closed for him, but I also think it’s given him a better shot for re-election in 2014. The election before last, he squeaked by. People were pretty tired of Perry but since Obama’s re-election, Perry has been going full on states rights. He’d be a lock for president of the new Republic of Texas (I can only dream….)
TxAnn56 on January 8, 2013 at 10:02 AM
With a bit of coaching, Perry would be a strong candidate for ’16. The GOP always goes for retreads. So come ’16, the eventual nominee would in all probability be someone who ran in ’12. Rising stars may enter the race, but they won’t win the nomination.
tommy71 on January 8, 2013 at 10:04 AM
I don’t know. The low information voters kinda like that folksy, regular guy persona that Rick Perry exudes. He just needs to not have those disastrous moments at the debates. C’mon, not being able to remember the third department he wants to eliminate? Even Bush for all the grief he got was actually pretty solid in his debate performances(save for that first one against Kerry).
Doughboy on January 8, 2013 at 10:04 AM
It’s going to go as well as Dan Quayle’s run for the Presidency in 2000.. for the same reason. Sorry Perry, you don’t recover from that disaster. Why this is even coming up again is beyond me. Son politicians live in a delusional world, not the real world.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 10:08 AM
so i’ll put you in the doubter column then.
Palin 2016

Perry’s got his BIG ROAD plans going full steam ahead.
Either support this “transamerica superhighway” and get behind Perry or don’t do either because Perry’s big deal appears to be making that superhighway happen.
At this rate, I’m going to support any individual who can out-slick Obama and the DNC and all their communist crud.
Lourdes on January 8, 2013 at 10:09 AM
Agreed. That’s why Perry was my pick in the primaries, because he had already done all those things, plus his 2A record was A+++.
I don’t know if he’s a viable candidate or not, but he would be a very good president. I think these horrible presidential campaigns often just serve the function of weeding out the best people, and discouraging good people from even running.
juliesa on January 8, 2013 at 10:09 AM
The RIght has to get the intelligence ‘community’ so-called to align with us.
Presently, intelligence is largely Leftwing and responsible for most of the feeding to media of such Leftwing prejudicial perspective.
Lourdes on January 8, 2013 at 10:10 AM
Correct! These next two years has to be all about deconstructing Obama and his supporters as to the crud they’re preaching. It’s all over social media, has to be deconstructed. Expecting entertainment industry to help out is a fail because they will be as they have been right there to ridicule anyone who tries to deconstruct the Obama, Communist, we’re angels narrative.
Lourdes on January 8, 2013 at 10:13 AM
Well anyone who’s a governor(aside from maybe a blowhard like CRISTie) should do ok in that regard. Just do your job, fight the feds every step of the way, and then throw your hat in the ring at some point in 2015 or 2016.
Doughboy on January 8, 2013 at 10:16 AM
But I do think the GOP needs new talent. It needs a younger candidate in 2016 than Perry will be, someone who has the sheen of showing up at the right moment. I don’t want to see the GOP run anyone from among already-exposed talent.
Lourdes on January 8, 2013 at 10:16 AM
Agreed. Palin and Perry are not serious contenders. Neither one comes across as all that bright.
bluegill on January 8, 2013 at 10:20 AM
I am just hoping Romney can run again in ’16. He is so smart, he deserves to get his butt kicked twice on the national stage.
portlandon on January 8, 2013 at 10:25 AM
They are both a waste of time.
I still think Palin makes a run in 2016 though. She is that delusional, as is her fan club.

…and appearances can be deceiving.
annoyinglittletwerp on January 8, 2013 at 10:27 AM
No, this is in fact wrong. We saw in 2012 that Romney won because he sealed up most of the big money donors early and was building ground support as well even before McCain lost in 2008. He also made sure to attack any potential rival through surrogates in the media to ensure that entry into the primaries would be very difficult. Several of the alternatives to Romney who ran had decent achievements under their belts (Herman Cain in business and Newt’s welfare reform success), but most of them had no money or GOTV operation. They were easy targets for the combined attacks from the “conservative” media and the MSM, and Romney’s negative advertising.
If conservatives are going to contest Jeb Bush in the Republican primaries in 2016, they will need to find someone who is running now. Or better yet, stop playing with the useless GOP and start a new second party.
Doomberg on January 8, 2013 at 10:30 AM
Well at least Romney got through debates without stuttering all over the stage.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 10:32 AM
It seems to me there are two classes of candidate: Those who want the job because they have something to accomplish and need to be President to get ‘er done, and those who just want the job for sake of having the job. A lot of good people are in the first category, but they tend to get swept under the rug. The current POTUS seems to be in the second category.

Lucano on January 8, 2013 at 10:35 AM
As a pragmatist, I’m predicting that the eventual ’16 nominee would be someone who already ran in ’12. If I’m right, who would YOU like to see as the nominee? Pick your poison, folks.
tommy71 on January 8, 2013 at 10:43 AM
Geez.. Romney won because he was the best candidate in an incredibly flawed field. There weren’t any plots by the evil GOP. It’s in the GOP moneymen and intelligensia’s interest to choose an electable candidate
Let’s go through and review the candidates:
1. Hermain Cain – He had a grabby problem with female coworkers. He also gave some stupid answers about Libya and collective bargaining for federal employees.
2. Newt Gingrich – Does any one not named Newt Gingrich believe he can be President? The guy is a smarmy jerk and a hypocrite who none of his former colleagues like. It took Romney about two minutes to destroy the guy in Iowa.
3. Rick Perry – The debate. Full stop. It’s Perry’s potato moment.
4. Rick Santorum – He enjoys lecturing others about their morality. People really don’t like it when politicians do that.
5. Jon Huntsman – He is auditioning to be the next Charlie Crist.
There are better candidates this time. If Jeb Bush is seriously that delusional, he is in for a surprise. He does strike me as actually living in the real world, so it wouldn’t shock me if this is just a ploy to up his speaking fees. The Bushes can just use Rubio to get whatever oil money or other goodies they’re looking for since Rubio is a Jeb Bush creation.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 10:58 AM
Don’t know. But if she does, I don’t think you’ll like the result.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:00 AM
Mitt Romney.. sarc off/
Sorry the 2012 field was pathetic. There are about 20 or so better candidates. Geez.. we’re really going to pick from that field. The 2016 race will be like the 2000 race as in no also rans are getting close. Unless Republicans enjoy losing in a landslide.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 11:01 AM
That field was “incredibly flawed” because everyone was put on notice that it was Romney’s turn, and any serious opposition was going to be nuked off the stage. That said, no one in that field — including Ron Paul — would have done any worse than Romney, given the spectacular failure Romney was even with all the advantages he had accrued over the previous 4 years.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:03 AM
Romney was boring vanilla in the debates, just like he is as a politician. More people were just ready to pounce on Perry for any mistake he might make, since, you know, it was Romney’s turn and all.
Perry should have just lowered the boom on Romney for attacking him from the left on entitlements.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:06 AM
Bush, Rubio and Ryan all have GOPe stank on ‘em. They’ll never win.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:07 AM
Who would want to run for President in ’16? The country is gonna be SO EFFED UP by then, it’ll likely be unrepairable.
Of course, we could repeal term limits and see if Obozo wants another term to finish us off.
44Magnum on January 8, 2013 at 11:13 AM
Perry couldn’t even get his boy Dewhurst elected..:)
Palin +1

CW on January 8, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Sure, why not Perry? Who would’ve predicted Reagan in 1980?/
sauldalinsky on January 8, 2013 at 11:18 AM
So Romney’s Mormon rays made Perry self implode in debates. Maybe he did give that lady cancer.. sarc off/
Yep.. I really hated that debate Romney had; the one where he wiped the floor with Obama.
Republicans generally run for the Republican nomination.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 11:18 AM
Listen I supported Romney with everything I had when he became the nominee but I was first and foremost a Perry supporter.
The GOP is going to have make a decision in 2016 – go with someone that is not all neat and polished but has the fighting spirit, the willingness to call a spade a spade and will tell the progressives to take a long walk off a short pier
OR
another “package” candidate that will lose.
At this point I’m not closing my mind to anybody that is conservative – Perry, Paul, Palin, Jindal or someone else who steps forward.
gophergirl on January 8, 2013 at 11:19 AM
Like the Bushies aren’t looking for something.. Otherwise, why the hhell is Jeb Bush and President in the same sentence. I also take a sarcastic view toward politicians in general.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 11:20 AM
Perry didn’t “implode”. He was just imperfect enough for Romney pimps to SAY Perry had imploded.
Romney was simply less bad than Obama in that debate. The outcome of the election wasn ‘t changed.
Yeah, and GOPe-approved empty suits generally lose in the general.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:21 AM
HotAir ain’t very good at pragmatism. I am. You could have a better bench strength for ’16, but they’re never gonna win the nomination. The ’16 nominee will be someone who has already run in ’12. Other than the loser Romney, who would you want to be the nominee?
tommy71 on January 8, 2013 at 11:22 AM
Are you kidding? HA loved them some pragmatic Romney. “Pragmatic” is just another way of saying “looooooooozer”.
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:24 AM
Being able to put together two sentences in an intelligent manner is a good thing. Neither Palin nor Perry apparently possess this trait. Paul is interesting for what he is, but he has made some massive slip-ups in the past (Civil Rights Act??). Jindal will definitely not be running as a conservative based on the comments he’s made since November. He is brilliant however.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 11:24 AM
Agreed. Rick Perry needs to start leading Texans into a campaign of civil disobedience against the government. He needs to put teeth into the 10th amendment and call the Federal Government’s bluff.
HondaV65 on January 8, 2013 at 11:26 AM
Of course they do.
You mean Jindal who was almost comical in that SOTU reponse? THAT Jindal?
I mean, if you’re going to hold some bad moments over SOME people forever…
ddrintn on January 8, 2013 at 11:27 AM
I wouldn’t vote for any of the other has beens who ran in the general. I’m on the record of this with Gingrich and Santorum. Would you have?
Forgetting your own talking points in the middle of the debate is an implosion.
Illinidiva on January 8, 2013 at 11:28 AM
Yep – the Romneybot mantra was “Vote for Willard cuz the people WILL VOTE for Willard.”
Then after the results came in …
“F**K the People – they’re hosed.”
