Lefty conundrum: As senator, Hagel opposed abortion even in cases of rape
“I am pro-life with one exception — the life of the mother. I oppose taxpayer funded
abortions. We must promote adoption and support the strengthening of American families. I will vote with and support the pro-life movement,” Hagel said in a piece of 1996 campaign literature, according to the Omaha World Herald.
Then Senate-candidate Hagel said that he “tightened” his position on abortion after he said he discovered that abortion in the case of rape and incest are “rare” according to multiple local press reports.
“As I looked at those numbers, if I want to prevent abortions, I don’t think those two exceptions are relevant,” Hagel said, according to the Omaha paper.

Wanna bet that position has changed? Regardless he is up for SOD.

My, my. This is about to get fun.
Kataklysmic on January 8, 2013 at 10:58 AM
So he’s going in with tow major strikes against him (three if you count the R after his name), but only 1 positive. Will the lefties come out against him?

*two, colds still suck.
nobar on January 8, 2013 at 10:59 AM
I was just gonna say, what does his views on abortion have to do with being Secretary of Defense?
Mitoch55 on January 8, 2013 at 10:59 AM
This is the key – he used to claim that he did, but he is now a full-blown abortionist, or obama would never have chosen him.

Michael Savage made a great point last night. He is nominating Hagel to get shot down and the nominate someone even further to the left and then say Hey these Republicans just block everything. Watch he will end up nominating Janet Napolitano. I say let Hagel through.

Heh. I’m sure we’ll see a missive from the nags at NOW any second now decrying Obama’s war on women. Why does Obama want extremists in his cabinet? /

It matters because the libs would say, for example, that Mitt Romney putting a dog on the roof of his car 30 years ago calls into question his overall character.

Fixed, to reflect the new hipper, cooler word for flip flopping.

I say let Napolitano through!

In other abortionist news: the democrats’ abortion industry is chopping right along …

Dunno. Offer a guy a choice between losing his hand or his whole arm doesn’t mean the guy shouldn’t at least consider looking into an option where he gets to keep the whole thing. I’d say let neither Hagel nor Napolitano through. Pointless of me to say that, though, since our congress critters are the ones we’d have to say that to, and we’ve recently seen what a waste of time that becomes.

The media will step up to the plate and take this pitch.

What does it matter to them? He’s nominated for Secretary of Defense, not the Supreme Court.
ButterflyDragon on January 8, 2013 at 11:11 AM
Given.
CW on January 8, 2013 at 11:12 AM
Maybe. Frankly I doubt the Democrats will care with the election won.

thebrokenrattle on January 8, 2013 at 11:29 AM
Oh, indeed. It will be fun from the standpoint that the left won’t make a peep. And it doesn’t matter that he’s being nominated for SOD which has little overlap with women’s issues. We all know if this was a Bush appointee it would be WW4.
Kataklysmic on January 8, 2013 at 11:35 AM
If the Republicans were smart they would be out in front of cameras right now congratulating the President on making a great choice based on the fact that Hagel opposes abortion. Then when Obama sends Hagel out to claim that his position has “evolved” on that, the Republicans can go back out in front of the same cameras and say, “its ok, we know that he needs to say that he evolved now for political reasons. We know where he really stands on the issue though.” Then shut their mouths and watch the fun start.

I stopped reading.

Hagel is “anti neocon”. Everything else doesn’t matter for some folks.
This really is, for the left, going after neocons. Hagel is the vehicle for it.
SteveMG on January 8, 2013 at 11:55 AM
eh! that is a small minus for me when its the defense secretary we are talking about, but the socons now will now have a harder time opposing this guy.
