How about imposing a breathing tax? Simply force every citizen (via ObamaCare, where poor victimized illegal aliens would be exempt) to have a breathing monitor permanently attached to their person that’s remotely monitored by the never-mistaken IRS!

The obese, asthmatics, the ill, the elderly, and windbags like you would pay more than the rest of us (hey, a good old sin tax to boot!) based on your over-consumption; i.e., your “fair” share.

And if you can’t pay, well we’ll just create a new social entitlement plan for oxygen credits (take from those who use less and give to those who use more) or get you a quick appointment with a Death Panel.

Now, get right on that (I know, don’t give ‘em any ideas — but I suspect it’s already crossed their minds), and I won’t be holding my breath just yet …

As we need to stop thinking about “entitlements” and start thinking about health care, so too we need to stop thinking about income-tax rates and start thinking about new kinds of taxes: taxes on energy use, on carbon emissions, and on consumption generally.
