Report: White House weighing broader-than-expected gun-control push
The White House is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation’s gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition, according to multiple people involved in the administration’s discussions.
A working group led by Vice President Biden is seriously considering measures backed by key law enforcement leaders that would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors, the sources said.
To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses. White House aides have also been in regular contact with advisers to New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg (I), an outspoken gun-control advocate who could emerge as a powerful surrogate for the Obama administration’s agenda…
In addition to potential legislative proposals, Biden’s group has expanded its focus to include measures that would not need congressional approval and could be quickly implemented by executive action, according to interest-group leaders who have discussed options with Biden and key Cabinet secretaries. Possibilities include changes to federal mental-health programs and modernization of gun-tracking efforts by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

They meat of this law will be to form a database. Nothing more for now.
They know that an outright assault on our guns will be chaos.
The database will be used later to confiscate guns because they will know where each one is and who owns it.
Insidious and true to form for tyrants!
How many lawmakers will not see this plot? How many will fall for this stealth crap!
DO NOT LET THIS DATA BASE EVER SEE THE LIGHT OF DAY!

Are we going to be allowed to talk abotu Fast & Furious now, or will there still be a news blackout?
blue13326 on January 5, 2013 at 7:51 PM
i think the muscle will eventually be these databases. The ones that need more ‘complete’ information on them about gun owners.
the left is increasingly relying on public fear and ‘shame’ to get its way. the Prop 8 business was one of the first. The newspaper publishing the names of gunowners was another.
The WI mailer that showed voting behavior of you and your neighbors was another…and the gotv of oba was another…we know you are registered…we know you voted for barry last time…so what time do you want the bus to get you?
the transactions issue will also be the muscle.

In other words they’ll ignore all the data and experience that tells us what works and do the exact opposite and push for a power grab.
I hope they push for this sooner than later. I’d love to see Obama squander any political capital
he has left fighting to criminalize 100 million Americans.
gwelf on January 5, 2013 at 7:53 PM
Should have thought about that tracking thing when they sold the guns to the ultra violent Mexican drug gangs.
But about those background checks, what exactly, if found, would disqualify a person from buying a gun? A violent felony? Any felony? Drunk Driving conviction? Misdemeanor pot conviction? Disorderly conduct from college years? A speeding ticket? J-walking ticket?

Flash. I’d guess at least half will have enough honesty to turn in their guns because it will be the law. Of the other half only a few will be willing to stand and fight when the jack boots come down their street.Let’s hope that few is enough.

I’ve seen several instances of the media referring to “high capacity ammunition” over the past month. Just shows how unqualified they are to discuss the topic.
Mark1971 on January 5, 2013 at 7:59 PM
Gun ownership is in the the healthcare bill. Just wait until the details come out about that little piece of information. You will be denied service if you happen to abide by the 2nd amendment.
Trust me. It’s in there.
It’s part of the -To Be Determined by the Sec. of HHS-

I dunno. History suggests that it is usually something very surprising and even a wee bit small in the overall scheme of things. It’s just that final insult-to-injury that pushes the people over the cliff.
Resist We Much on January 5, 2013 at 8:02 PM
I get a kick out this “high capacity” nonsense. What that says to me is, they`ll tolerate fewer dead innocents.
Just come out and say you want to strike the 2nd amendment already!

i wish that were funny. Docs will be asking home info on their forms..i’m not so sure that ‘is their a gun in the house’ isn’t already there…but if its not then will be shortly
and, of course, that data will be entered into the Medical Database at HHS/IRS/AFT database in…i guess Utah

And the Dems worry about Filibusters?
CW on January 5, 2013 at 8:14 PM
The next time you go to a doctor and fill out the medical history form, there will likely be a “is there a gun in the home” quesiton, which they will say is just to alert them to a possible health risk, and to “counsel” you about the risks either to children or in case of a domestic dispute.
Wethal on January 5, 2013 at 8:15 PM
How will they “database” the millions of guns that are already in circulation? Perhaps by linking ammo sales. Why would Snuffy Smith buy 20 gauge shells unless he has a gun we don’t know about? Seems to me BATF is getting an EO to force stores to record & track ammo sales. That may be the angle to not need congressional approval. Not good!

Well the logical inference is hey, 10 dead kids is obviously better than 20.
They’re not aiming for 0 dead kids because this isn’t about dead kids at all – they’re just cover.
Much as muslims use ‘holy’ mosques as arms dumps, gun control statists use the dead bodies of ‘some’ kids (typically white, upper middle class, and good looking) as cover for their authoritarian liberty destroying antics.
The holy warriors are gambling you’re too chicken to storm the mosk.
These homegrown tools are gambling you’re too cowed by a tragedy that involves cute kids, bullets, guns, and a crazy guy.

My HHS post had no humor in it. It’s a fact.
I went in to the local medical office down the street with a sinus infection and filled out the triage form. It clearly asked if there was a firearm in my home.
I left it blank. It’s non of their damn business. I was treated. This was 3 years ago.
My feeling is that we will not be treated as time goes on and the DATABASE grows and the law begins to gel.

The Dodd-Frank bill gave the FEDS real time access to your personal banking transaction. Think they don’t have every American in their sites?
Apply for a CCW. Visit a sporting goods store and trigger the database. Visit a local gun show or shop. Take the family to the local shooting range. Buy gun parts online. Everything you do will be gathered and has been gathered for years. It’s all there just waiting for the social trigger to be pulled for them to tie it all together and flip the switch.
katy on January 5, 2013 at 8:27 PM
Yep. The history of revolutions – hot and cold – shows that almost all are preceded by a long string of insults, tyrannies, corruption scandals, etc, that don’t necessarily appear to be leading toward something as they are occurring, but in hindsight, the arc is apparent. It happened in the colonies here, in England, in Russia, in France, in the Eastern Bloc, and so forth. While the revolutions themselves can take different forms, such as the American or French models, there is usually a series of abuses inflicted upon the people by the rulers that, finally, just tries the former’s last nerve. After that, things begin to happen very fast and take unpredictable turns.
