Secret cause of violent crime: Lead?
Like many good theories, the gasoline lead hypothesis helps explain some things we might not have realized even needed explaining. For example, murder rates have always been higher in big cities than in towns and small cities. We’re so used to this that it seems unsurprising, but Nevin points out that it might actually have a surprising explanation—because big cities have lots of cars in a small area, they also had high densities of atmospheric lead during the postwar era. But as lead levels in gasoline decreased, the differences between big and small cities largely went away. And guess what? The difference in murder rates went away too. Today, homicide rates are similar in cities of all sizes. It may be that violent crime isn’t an inevitable consequence of being a big city after all.
The gasoline lead story has another virtue too: It’s the only hypothesis that persuasively explains both the rise of crime in the ’60s and ’70s and its fall beginning in the ’90s. Two other theories—the baby boom demographic bulge and the drug explosion of the ’60s—at least have the potential to explain both, but neither one fully fits the known data. Only gasoline lead, with its dramatic rise and fall following World War II, can explain the equally dramatic rise and fall in violent crime.

There’s more cement in big cities, too. Ban cement.

Yeah, lead is a leading cause of death from a gunshot wound…

When I as a toddler back in the 60′s I ate paint chips and chewed on pencils. How come I’m not a violent criminal? Maybe lead only affects blacks and hispanics?
Tc0061 on January 4, 2013 at 3:25 PM
I don’t know what effect lead has on causing crime, but I do know it has a terrific impact in preventing crime, particularly when cast in 145 gr doses.
JohnTant on January 4, 2013 at 3:25 PM
Lead in gasoline also makes kids drop out of school, form gangs, and wear Nike’s and “bling”.
Also cause girls to become pregnant…it is even worse than thought, lead in gasoline effects minorities, specifically african/american’s in even greater numbers…

Ironically, the cure is also lead.

Just one small piece of information is missing, just a small piece…no medical evidence has shown an increase in lead in our bodies…none, but we have had an increase in liberal education.

It’s better than crediting abortion for the drop in crime rates.

One of the arguments I have heard leftards make against guns is that the lead from the bullets is a pollutant.
Blake on January 4, 2013 at 3:32 PM
But not similar between cities and everywhere else. Violent crime is still much greater in a city.
This is just malarkey. The difference went from more than triple to a little less than double but twice as much is not “largely went away”. I also wonder how much city depopulation has contributed to this trend.
Rocks on January 4, 2013 at 3:32 PM
Not that I agree with the hypothesis but not all paint contained lead and pencils don’t contain any, they’re graphite.
Rocks on January 4, 2013 at 3:34 PM
The drop in crime rates is simple…we are older and it’s harder to crawl through an open window… arthritis makes it difficult to hold a gun, and bad knees prevents us from running…
right2bright on January 4, 2013 at 3:34 PM
He’s wrong. It’s pirates or lack there of. As the population of pirates declined so did crime. Then we started getting all these mass murders over the last couple of decades. Why? Increases of Semolina Pirates. The answer is clear. If we want to stop violence, especially mass murder we must eliminate the Semolina Pirates.

Waiting for some liberal to say the gun owners can’t get the lead from their gasoline anymore so they lick bullets for the lead effect…

There’s a simple answer to every complex issue and it’s usually wrong.
RadClown on January 4, 2013 at 3:51 PM
Yikes. The rise in crime was due to Progressive judicial activists letting criminals loose back in to their communities believing that “society” was at fault and the repeat criminals could be “rehabbed.”
Thomas Sowell has written about this, at length, for literally decades.

It’s true, the Obama E.P.A. tried to get the lead from bullets banned as a pollutant.

I heard this ~2 weeks ago on the radio from a caller but could find no story anywhere in the MSM to substantiate it. It affirms there was a ready-to-roll national media cover story to validate another AWB regardless of the weapon used.
Thank you Schadenfreude for posting it.
