Tom Cole: The House GOP should take the deal
“When you can make 85% of the Bush tax cuts secure for 98% of the American people, give everybody rate certainty, and basically take the revenue piece off the table in our negotiations going forward, we ought to take this deal right now.”

And about the “no tax hikes” pledge, Tom?

Seriously?
Really, seriously?

No, I strongly disagree.
I was strongly supportive of a deal that kept my taxes from going up but now, in lite of the personal pain it will cause, would prefer for us to go over the cliff.
Why? Because its about time we as a nation, but especially Liberals, were forced to face the bill for the size of government we demand. We cannot continue to spend more than we’re willing to tax. The longer we postpone the unavoidable day if reckoning the more damaging it will be.
Obama and the Democrats seem to believe that the GOP will take the blame for higher taxes, and they might, but once people are made to understand this is the price for the government they vote for, they will turn their anger toward the party of BIG government.
My immediate goal is to do whatever I can to protect myself physically and financially.

After last night anyone with a brain is doing exactly that.

Is he really so stupid that hethinks BO is done with increasing taxes on the evil rich? Or that we will ever see spending cuts of any significance?
When the GOP folds on this – in the hopes of not being blamed for hurting all those poor people while protecting those evil rich people – they will have truely become Obama’s bit*hes.
Every time BO wants to dole out another freebie if the GOP doesn’t agree to raise a tax to cover it or ignore the impact to the debt they will be accused of hating the poor. It will be the new race card.

Come on now Charle, They ( the public in general ) still blame Bush for the ills in the economy. The population was ready to blame all of this going over the cliff stuff on the republicans.
I look at it this way people… letting the rates go up on the “rich” takes away a big chunk of the class warfare meme from the liberals. Not only that, the rates for the rest are set in stone now and we do not have to go back willingly to argue on them again.
We need time to get people to turn around to the entitlement modifications. Going over now will be political suicide. Yeah sure, could have gone over and then let the pain hit, what happens then? We have elections every 2 years and let me tell you, if the liberals got full control of all again like they did last time, they would just enact what they needed and then some… meanwhile leaving republicans with nothing.
I know I get flamed for it, but really, reality sucks. Right now is not the time to be pounding our chest about the spending cuts.
People are starting to come around to it…. we just need time…

WHere have you been, the liberals already use the poor card too… but now instead of the whole protecting the rich, this effectively took away a talking point for them…. and I do think of all 3 ( rich, middle, and poor ) that was the strongest one they had.

No you spineless wimp.

Cole’s point is that with this deal when it comes to the debt ceiling deal, Obama can’t bitch about the GOP refusing to raise taxes. The GOP can point that they compromised on taxes and now its the liberals to compromise on entitlement and the GOP will have actual proof of the argument. Obama will not have anything substantial to fall back on especially since they are spiking the football over revenue. Yeah its a crap deal. But its better than raising taxes on 250k and above.

After the strong bipartisan vote at the Senate, the House will follow. Inevitable!
tommy71 on January 1, 2013 at 1:13 PM
Typical RINO/big Govt. GOP apologist argument.
So let’s say the rich is now defined as >$450,000 or >$250,000… what stops the Dems from bringing the bar lower again in about a year and then accusing the GOP of trying to shield their “rich” friends?
See the box the Senate GOP sellouts have allowed themselves to be painted into?
Why can’t ONE articulate Senate or House GOP spokesperson step out in front of the cameras and EXPLAIN that the GOP does not favor tax increases for ANYONE and that includes the so-called RICH.
Why should anyone be punished for being RICH? Is it now a crime? Even France seems to understand that after a court shot down Hollande’s tax increases.
But if the GOP acquiesces to the argument that the rich should pay some so-called FAIR SHARE, they have already lost the argument!!!
TheRightMan on January 1, 2013 at 1:20 PM
Exactly. When we get the inevitable shortfall in revenues, they will scream the the new rich includes those making 250 k, then repeat the cycle with 100k and so on. Like the WH bragged about it., once they got the GOP to fold on raising taxes, next time it will be easier.
AH_C on January 1, 2013 at 2:57 PM
Well, can we really expect them to do anything different at this point?
