An optimistic take on the fiscal cliff deal
But what happens now that Obama has gotten his way? It will soon become apparent that the fiscal cliff deal, including precisely the tax increases that Obama has been demanding for four years, makes hardly a dent in the deficit. At best, it will reduce the deficit by five or six percent. We will continue to run up deficits of close to $1 trillion a year, and the national debt will continue to grow, as Obama has always intended. This fact can’t be hidden; it will be reported. Journalists who have pulled their punches in the past because they wanted Obama to be re-elected will now begin to ask, what are we going to do about the deficit and the debt? At some point, perhaps sooner rather than later, interest rates will begin to rise, at which point the debt issue will become a crisis. And Republicans will say: we told you so.
The Democrats will have only three choices: they can try to raise taxes on the “rich” even higher. But raising them to 100% wouldn’t deal with the deficit, even if you assume all those rich people are willing to work for free. The second option is to restrain federal spending. The Democrats would rather die than do that. The third option is to try to raise taxes on all those millions of Americans who aren’t rich. That is what the Democrats will do once the moment arrives when they can no longer ignore the trillions of dollars in debt they are inflicting on our children. That will be, politically, a very bad moment for the Democrats and a very good one for the Republicans, who can offer the alternative of less spending and who will have been proved right with respect to the biggest policy debate of recent years.
All of this is another way of saying that, with the Democrats’ BS about raising taxes on the rich out of the way, we can have a rational debate about the country’s fiscal future.

It’s still a crap sandwich no matter how much salt and mayo you throw at it.

Will never happen…
Republicans are in bed with the whole big government progressives.
Republicans, when faced with an opportunity to cut the power of Washington always vote, as Ryan showed in this vote, to keep power in Washington.
It is a pipe dream, we will never get what we want as Conservatives.
Let It Burn. Add fuel and fan as needed.

Powerline is under the assumption that the majority aszhats who vote demorat will even pay attention to numbers they can’t understand. Bark will keep throwing out peanuts to his monkey supporters, and when the peanuts run out he will point at us and say to the monkeys “Get them! They are the cause of the peanut shortage!”
And then we all sing along with Nena.

The Dems spent the last four years screwing over the country yet Obama was re-elected comfortably and the Dems picked up seats in the House and Senate. Why would passing another crappy bill suddenly change things?

Fair points. The worst thing about the cliff would have been allowing Democrats get the middle class taxes that they want and need while pretending otherwise to avoid the political fallout. The only bad part from a strategy perspective is that the 250k-400k delta that the rats didn’t get they may try to use as an excuse for continued skyrocketing debt – not sure that will fly but at least it pulls the “millionaires and billionaires” crutch out from under them.

No. They. Won’t.
They’ll find any excuse not to report on it. After this deal, the debt is yesterday’s news. We thought the media couldn’t ignore the unemployment rate but they sure as hell did. We thought the media couldn’t ignore the Benghazi scandal but they sure as hell did. Stop expecting the media to do the right thing. They absolutely will not.

If someone is too dumb to realize that claiming to collect an extra $60 billion in taxes this year won’t make a dent in a trillion+ deficit then I don’t know what you think is going to make such a retard ever come to that realization.
There’s nothing good about this POS bill. Nothing. Stop trying to pick the turd up by its clean end.

There is a point at which “politics” no longer matters. Our debt is over $16T and increasing exponentially. The time to fix this mess ran out a while ago.
There is nothing positive to be said about DC, or its inhabitants, or this stupid “deal” they put together. Until the middle class rises up and, in solidarity, stops these idiots, things will forever be bleak.
Will the middle class rise up?
No.
(I’m starting a new job next week. I plan to look into CCW courses, etc., as soon as my cash-flow improves. My investment advice: Buy guns, ammo, and (real, tangible) gold.)

Sure. When things go sour, Obama and the Democrats will totally get the blame for it.
Totally.

It’s funny some people still hold out hope so-called journalists will actually return to journalism, instead of continuing their open advocacy on behalf of Dems.
Still, the feeble attempt at silver linings is well taken. I don’t agree with the idea that because this passed, suddenly the GOP is seen as OK with tax increases, or that it’s easier to do so again in the future. I think it’s pretty clear that Obama and the Dems were pushing for this increase, and that the GOP didn’t want it. And, with the way this clusterfark went down, I don’t think the GOP will be so inclined to go along with it again when more are pushed for later.

Yep. Just like the “nuanced” morons claiming that the Roberts decision on Obamacare was “playing the long game” and would hurt the Democrats because they’d “own it.”
Tired of looking so deep for hidden “bright sides.” There is none. There is never one anymore.
