C’mon, America: Grab those guns
Thank heavens, then, for the mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg, founder of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, who has fought for 13 years now against this twisting of the spirit of American law…
It is by these actions and others like it that the United States will triumph over the fanatical gun lobby and its criminal insanity.
It is through a mass uprising of conscience that the country may now be able, as it has always done at critical moments in its history, to reconnect with its values and come to its senses.
May President Obama hear and heed this great cry rising from the depths of the nation’s soul and make his second term an occasion for the intellectual, moral, and political reform demanded by America’s citizens, a reform that the president implicitly promised, with tears in his eyes, on the day of the Newtown massacre. That, on the threshold of a new year, is the fervent wish of a friend, not only of the United States, but of the ideals of liberty that it has always embodied better than any other country.

Ah ze great French intellectual.
The French like their guns. They really, really like their guns. All except for the soi-disant socialistes perhaps.

I’ve had liberals tell me that the efforts of Democrats are to make America live up to its ideals and to make it “more American.” With people like this, how can any reasoning take place?

LOL. There are Mayors who are for illegal guns? Bloomberg is against LEGAL guns, you blithering idiot.
Jut STFU you frog turd. You’re no De Toqueville. You’re not even a de Toqueville skid mark. Worry about your own pathetic frogs, who seem ready to pull the guillotines out again to start lopping the heads off of rich folks. You despicable frenchmen have more envy and jealousy in you than any other people on Earth. You are the dregs of Western society.

Someone, anyone, should have taught them that the guns were for shooting your enemies, not for dropping when the time was right for running.
Personally, I am completely opposed to any further attempts on the part of the United States to repair the sovereignty of the French nation from invasion from any quarter.
We’ve done it twice at a cost that dwarfs their efforts on our behalf at the time of our Revolution.

Repost that everywhere you can – it is vitally important that we teach as many people as possible the history of our Republic and the importance of an armed citizenry.
History is now repeating itself upon our shores and we must spread the news.

We won’t welcome them like some folks did.

we have to accept the fact that there are deeply irrational people in this country…and they are deeply pacifist. Enough so that their answer to violence is to throw chalk and erasers at the attacker.
Enough so that they do not want to protect themselves (or others) with a gun….and they don’t understand, or trust, anyone else (except the police) to do so.

The only twisting of the spirit of the law is being done by the radical leftists(like you and Bloomy) that try saying it is limited to muskets, or that it is the National Guard, or that it is no longer relevant. Well if let me have a musket, you are going to get a musket to the junk.
If you want to pass a law banning certain guns, all you need to do is change the Constitution, It’s been done before so go ahead and try it. I guarantee you won’t like the results.

Euro-Dumbass. You have such a great track record of genocidal totalitarians who confiscate guns to assure there is no opposition, all under the guise of public safety. Tyranny starts with sheeple.
By the way, there was a 1000 table gun show here in the Peoples Republic of Fairfax, VA – Home Federal Bureaucrats. The place was swamped with the biggest crowds ever. Some AR/AK sellers did not show up because they were sold out. Everyone else did record business. If I were Nancy or Chuckie I would be terrified. They are courting disaster.

I appreciated Levy’s Who Killed Danny Pearl, which tracked the blood trail deep into Pakistan, AQ, KSM, and ISI. It’s a worthwhile read, and the research took some stones, especially for a Jewish man deep in Taliban country. That was respectable. He’s not a total waste of oxygen. But he’s dead wrong on our 2nd Amendment, on individualism, and what it means for us to be Free.

The Rogue Tomato on December 30, 2012 at 10:24 PM
While it might be a minor point, I think it is worth noting this author has fallen prey to some misinformation.
As I understand it, the Bushmaster rifle was never used in the Newtown shooting. It was in the shooter’s vehicle, but not used in the school.
The point here is anti-gun advocates are waving around the Newtown shooting as an example of why guns need to be banned while ignoring the facts. Instead, the media is content with making up their own to fit the same tired and old narrative that the left has been pushing.
The liberals in this country want nothing more than for the American majority to admit the 2nd Amendment is antiquated. Why? Because if you can outlaw one part of the Constitution for being antiquated, then you can do it to every part.
Does anyone think your Freedom of Speech can be protected under such logic? The Founding Fathers could never anticipate the invention of the internet and the power of a single person being able to communicate to the entire world. Clearly, your ability to speak freely on the internet is too powerful and must be suppressed.
See how easy it is? Doesn’t take much to make an argument that a Harvard Law student would be nodding their head to.
Flashwing on December 30, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Bernard, I realize that you’re a philosopher in the continental tradition, but continental philosophers can and do make arguments. So what is your argument here? Let’s do an easy thought experiment:
Suppose that X legally purchased and registered an AR-15 and keeps it properly secured. Suppose that Y legally purchased and registered an AR-15, but doesn’t keep it properly secured. Suppose that Z steals Y’s AR-15 and goes on a killing spree.
Please explain why X should lose his or her right to own an AR-15 due to Y’s carelessness and Z’s psychotic and criminal behavior. What is the moral principle by which one person loses a right because another person abuses that right or ignores it altogether?
Put a bit more technically, all policy arguments, being normative, require that a moral principle be conjoined to the facts in order to be logically valid. What is that principle in regards to gun control? What is a logically valid argument for gun control? I don’t doubt that such arguments exist, but gun control advocates never make them. If we want to have a rational conversation about guns, we have to go beyond appeals to emotion.
Baerwulf on December 30, 2012 at 10:38 PM
That doesn’t explain the Coroner’s finding that all the victims in the school were killed by high-powered rifle rounds to the head.
I heard the same thing. The police reported the rifle was not used in the shootings in the school because it was still in the car. And, then, the coroner came out with his report. Who’s lying? And is it due to political expediency? Hmmmmm?
We all know that the godfather (who owns at least 500 deaths in Chicago – this year) instilled in the ‘ONE’ that he should never let a crisis go to waste.
Hammie on December 30, 2012 at 10:42 PM
I agree. If there does in fact need to be more constructive gun controls (not knee-jerk reactions), then all must cometo the table and discuss openly about why and why not. Stop the name-calling; stop the blame game. Get it all out in the open.
First thing that needs to be conveyed to those wanting all guns off the street except for the police need to understand that will not work. If that became law, maybe 50% of the known guns would go away in a very short time, but these are not the guns were/are in the hands of those committing all the gun crimes in America. The criminals have them now and they will not give them up.
Second, they need to have the supreme court justices explain to them one more time (because they obviously cannot read well enough to read a SCOTUS decision) about how the police DO NOT have any obligation to protect citizens from crime. Their duty is to investigate those crimes after they occur (and the “gun control law-”abiding” citizen is dead).

That was one of the “facts” that the MSM screwed up in their hurry to get out a story. He did all the shooting with the Bushmaster, evidently, except for the bullet with which he took his own life. There was a shotgun left in the car.
