Dude?
“It only takes a minute for a theft to occur,” American Kennel Club spokeswoman Lisa Peterson told CBS 2′s Dave Carlin on Friday…
But happy endings are rare as dognapping cases rise nationwide by almost 70 percent, according to the American Kennel Club.
“Last year for example we tracked more than 432 pet thefts and that’s just scratching the surface,” Peterson said. “For the first time ever we’ve seen a trend now where shelters are being broken into and purebred and mixed breed dogs are being stolen.”

That is because dogs are huge money makers. Heck my little minature pug ( please dont ask ) was $650.00.

Better that someone should have their dog napped and sold off in the doggie black market than to have it end up on the dinner plate of some primitive, third-world imbecile.

Most of them aren’t solved because most of them aren’t dognappings. They are just fraud. A guy finds out the dog is missing and pretends he has the dog so a ransom will be paid.
I ran across this pic, which seems to be related.

I had a client who stole a neighbor’s dog. They charged him with grand theft because the dog purchase was $400. The public defender successfully argued that the dog depreciated and it should be reduced to a petty thief. Anyway, it went downhill from there. My client rejected a sweetheart deal, went to trial and was convicted. That night, someone knocked on the victim’s door and shot him dead. So, the homicide cops start investigating and determined that my client had one of his buddies give a fake name and commit perjury to give him an alibi. My client was sentenced to prison, was looking at additional charge for suborning perjury, and being investigated for murder. Couldn’t have happened to a nicer fellow. At the time of the theft, the victim was living with his pregnant girlfriend. My client lived across the street with his mother and 7 brothers. So, I can see why the victim did nothing more than call the police. Me, if some one steals my dog, I will do them grievous harm.

20+ years ago my parents – and I – raised English Bulldogs to sell. We valued and sold them at around $500 each depending upon various factors. Today, depending upon where you are, purebred English bulldogs can fetch four times that price.
Yeah, depending upon the breed and the region, there’s a market for dogs. Depending upon the region, there’s also a market for dogs period… bait dogs… dog fighting.
About ten years ago I had a dog a neighbor had left behind which was pregnant. I was saddled with a mutt with a litter of pups. At eight weeks I put out ads for free puppies. On more than one occasion I turned away individuals who tried to take more than one puppy. It was pretty clear to me what the intentions of the individuals were when they were looking for multiple free puppies for “each of their grandkids”.

If people will risk death by stealing live power lines to sell for scrap copper for a few bucks they will steal anything not locked down. Nothing will stop someone with ill intent and the means. If that means stealing live dogs one would hope they have a buyer and not try to sell it on eBay or Craig list for a few bucks they will.

Maybe dog napping is up or maybe micro chipping dogs is down. You just never know.
Nothing like a good dog napping story to boost micro chip sales.

That was my first thought, JT. It’s like the local widow guy going around shooting out windows.

They said that if I voted for Romney no dog would be safe. They were right.
