“The Journal News has placed the lives of these folks at risk by creating a virtual shopping list for criminals and nut jobs”
“The asinine editors at The Journal News, have once again gone out of their way to place a virtual scarlet letter on law abiding firearm owners throughout the region. The immediate elimination of the information posted on the Journal News Website is the only way we can ensure the safety and liberty of these New Yorkers,” said Mr. Ball in a statement. “This is clearly a violation of privacy, and needs to be corrected immediately. The same elitist egg heads who use their editorial page to coddle terrorists and criminals are now treating law abiding citizens like level three sexual predators.”
Mr. Ball vowed to introduce a bill in the State Senate that would ban disclosure of information in pistol license applications except to law enforcement officials involved in active investigations. Similar legislation has already been proposed in the State Assembly. In his statement, Mr. Ball described The Journal News’ map as placing peoples’ lives in danger.

This map provides a better resource for the assorted buglers and petty thieves who will now know which homes DON’T have weapons. A valuable resource to the enterprising residential entry crook.

Amazing how the “Law of Unintended Consequences” shows in Leftist/Libbie actions every time.
Publish a list of gun owners … now criminals know where NOT to go and (LoUC) where TO go for their B&Es.
The list could go on and on about all the “good” things government intends without considering the side effects as well as how the LoUC will kick in.
Things like rent control, rabbits in Australia, affirmative action, calorie lists all have downstream effects that can cause significantly more harm than the good they were purported to achieve.

As Twitchy reported, over the weekend, New York’s Journal News published an interactive map pinpointing all legal handgun permit holders — names and addresses included — in Westchester and Rockland Counties. In doing so, the Journal News not only violated personal privacy but also essentially put those who live in gun-free households at risk. Editor and VP CynDee Royle, responsible for publishing the story, proudly stands by her decision to violate others’ personal safety … by bravely running away.
In a blatant example of “for me, but not for thee” syndrome, Royle has deleted her Facebook profile and maintains a protect Twitter account, meaning only those whom she approves can access her deep, thoughtful tweets. Perhaps Royle just doesn’t have the guts to face the righteous indignation of gun rights advocates.

Let me hop onto my favorite hobbyhorse and point out that since Heller allows states to require licensing before a constitutionally guaranteed right can be exercised, there’s no reason a license to practice journalism, restricted to those who can use one responsibly, can’t be implemented.

I would suspect that anyone that gets broken into could sue the paper. Maybe the paper could also be charged with aiding the criminal because there really was no legitimate reason to publish the information.
I hate to say this but how does it fall under freedom of speech? The paper is not criticizing the government in any way. It is a straight out attack by outing people to the public that they do not agree with. Just imagine if it was a list and map of gays.
The other thing is that they published this as a way to say, “Here are the crazy, paranoid people that are not to be trusted.” Nothing like whacking a hornets nest. I would be worried that one of those crazy, paranoid people would act like I believe they do and come after me. On the other hand she was comfortable with publishing it because she knows that the people are law abiding citizens that pose no risk to her. Just like all the brave media folk that attack Christians and bow to islam. They know that no harm to them will come from the Christians but know the is a very real possibility of harm from the rop. She did this to up her credentials with the liberal elite and just like every liberal she could care less about the collateral damage she causes.

Only for the people in those counties. At least the others should be safer. In a just world the paper would be punished for this action as it poses a very real possibility of harm coming to the people on the list and I don’t mean only the permit owners.

Now we know which paper was trying to go after Oregon conceal carry registrations. We thought it was the NYT, but we figured out it was the Journal News.
Thankfully, in Oregon, they passed a bill that forbids the press from getting that information. Doesn’t fall under “FOIA”.

.
Those fools have no idea what kind of hornets nest they kicked over, there’s lots of public info available, like political donations, that is suddenly being linked to these “journalists.”
.
Everytime one of these fools tries to do something similiar, this is how you stop it.

With each passing day the Journal’s liability for problems resulting from having outdated information on their website increases. I don’t know what the probability is for burglary of a published address is, due to it’s being published, but people move. Heck, people may have been in the process of moving and notified the state of the change of address the day after the Journal retrieved the information or even the day they published. If something happens to a family in their new house that previous had an owner with a CCW permit, that’s going to be a problem for the Journal.
There’s a horse::barn door aspect to this also. Too bad the Journal didn’t think about that.

petefrt on December 27, 2012 at 9:29 AM
Of course it will also be a problem for the journal if a burglary happens to the current resident. I was just thinking about the cleaner, inaccurate problem.

Well then I hope that some people take up the cause and go after them like they are going after Gregory for the magazine. The media is not above the law even if they think they are. Maybe a few well place arrests and heavy fines will start to make them think twice before they pull this crap again. I know, I’m dreaming but, one never knows. It could happen.
Dr. Frank Enstine on December 27, 2012 at 10:05 AM
I think you are quite probably correct. Someone should file a complaint.
I work for the government-certain databases are confidential because they contain personal info-this includes some US Census info, survey data, etc.-in fact it would be a felony for me to give that info out-a fact I have had to explain to certain parties from time to time.
I see no reason why pistol permit info should be different-the legal statute you psoted above seems to me to be pretty explicit.
Someone needs to file charges.
