On what grounds should Piers Morgan be deported?
Whether noncitizens may be deported for speech that is constitutionally protected from criminal punishment is not clear. But to my knowledge there’s no statutory authorization for such deportation; the government can’t just deport anyone it pleases (even when the person is not a permanent resident), but has to follow federal law on the subject. And even if Congress could authorize the deportation of people for speaking out in favor of various laws, it hasn’t done so at this point.
But beyond this — and even setting aside the question whether deporting someone for his speech should be seen as violating the First Amendment — the U.S. Constitution doesn’t just contain the Second Amendment. It also contains Article V, which specifically provides that the Constitution may be amended.
Even assuming that Morgan wants to argue for gun controls that would violate the Second Amendment as you think it should be properly understood, that’s not a “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution,” any more than arguing for repeal of Prohibition in 1925 or the enactment of the income tax in 1910 was a “hostile attack against the U.S. Constitution. He’s not calling for violent revolution. He’s just arguing about what the right policy ought to be, and We the People have the ability to implement that policy, often without a constitutional amendment but sometimes with.

Eugene, why such a party-pooper?
novaculus on December 27, 2012 at 12:02 PM
No need to deport him. Just make him move to the south side of Chicago if gun control is so important to him.
NavyMustang on December 27, 2012 at 12:02 PM
Deporting the stupid Git would be against the spirit of the first amendment. Just because we don’t like what you say we are kicking you out because you aren’t a citizen? The left would love to see conservatives trying to get him deported, that would fit their narrative of us as small minded people.

‘Cause he’s a dumbazz! Canada is recruiting our folks, I see an exodus coming.

CNN should be boycotted until they dump King Troll.
ronsfi on December 27, 2012 at 12:09 PM
Eugene misses the point entirely as I see it. The calls to deport are a silly answer to an equal silly call by an non-citizen to take away God given American rights. Rights that are enshrined forever as being endowed by our creator and are worded as such that they “..shall NOT be infringed”
Folks who are uppity about calls to deport without equal issue with said calls to infringe upon our God given rights are not to be taken seriously in the first place.

Morgan is an arrogant and sanctimonious jerk. Many are simply pleased by the opportunity to make it clear to him how we feel about him. The world would be a better place if Morgan would take his talents to Pakistan, preferably the NW Tribal Areas.
I would support a constitutional amendment that would allow deportation of non-citizens by national referendum. Call it the Douchebag Morgan Amendment.

He’s a mean spirited arse.
Let’s start there.

Attempts by a foreigner to undermine a country’s laws is sedition.
As a foreign national, a visitor to our shores, Morgan does not have the right to demand that we change our laws.
He is a guest abusing the hospitality of his hosts.

A man who publishes and gets fired for fake pictures of supposed British troops torturing Iraqis, should not come to the US to get wealthy. I know that I am beating this to death but it really really makes me angry. We have enough fake “journalist” why import them?
Cindy Munford on December 27, 2012 at 12:14 PM
On these grounds: it’s pretty difficult to immigrate to the U.S. if you are a white British citizen, and a work permit seems to require some evidence of an employer who can’t find the right employee among our citizenry. So is CNN having trouble finding obnoxious, stupid liberals to talk on television?
I suspect not.

Take away his work visa and he will self deport.

I thought the Left whined because they sa Conservatives have no sense of humor.
Piers Morgan and all his defenders should be deported if for no other reason that they’re wussy little snots. Isn’t that a good enough reason?
katiejane on December 27, 2012 at 12:19 PM
‘Cause he’s ugly?!!?! C’mon, Eugene, give us a little wiggle room here. It’s in the Constitution. No British uglies.
Fallon on December 27, 2012 at 12:26 PM
I think the combination of smug and British should be illegal. And judging by his TV ratings if he were to be deported no one would notice.
bannor on December 27, 2012 at 12:26 PM
On what grounds should Piers Morgan be deported?
.
Failure to adapt.
Lack of knowledge of the US Constitution, and US history.
Lack of good moral character.
Unwilliness to bear arms for the United States.
LincolntheHun on December 27, 2012 at 12:28 PM
If he’s not a US citizen then a ‘reason’ shouldn’t be needed. He is only here on sufferance.

Because it’s in the Constitution that we can deport gun-grabbing fascist aholes…see, right there in the document next to abortion rights and free birth control.

Don’t deport him, ignore him.
That will hurt him worse.

For spite.
And the sheer joy of it.
Can we choose to where he is deported?
I was thinking North Korea.
justltl on December 27, 2012 at 12:35 PM
Oh, no one is serious. It’s just a way of telling him he is an ahole. Remember when the brits trashed talked Romney who dared venture an opinion on the Olympics? Well now they can put on their big girl pants.

I am. Why non-americans are given such a prominent role editorializing about how we should run our country is a mystery. I take that back, it’s not a mystery so much as a travesty.
Fenris on December 27, 2012 at 12:48 PM
This guy is trolling you reactionaries for ratings.
The best way to beat Morgan is to ignore him and keep his ratings in the toilet.

Our constitution only applies to our citizens.
Piers Morgan has no American constitutional rights.

Dread Pirate Roberts VI on December 27, 2012 at 12:57 PM
We can barely deport those who commit violent felonies. Terrorists are a coin toss. The chances of deporting a big mouth who has committed no crime beyond opening his dump yap, is zero to none.
Blake on December 27, 2012 at 12:59 PM
On what grounds should a citizen receive a harsher penalty for using a racial slur during an assault?
On what grounds should a lending institution be forced to lend to people who are likely to default? etc. etc.
If the sensibility of the day is to impose rule based on emotions rather than objective reality, then if Piers Morgan makes enough people feel icky, then deport him.

How about because he’s a snotty flying richard?
Boogeyman on December 27, 2012 at 1:33 PM
This is a nice palate cleanser or opportunity to rant…but we can’t deport him.
Best to not watch his show and plan to tolerate his insufferableness when Hot Air decides to blog about him.
Unfortunately, he will get some ratings because apparently so many airports & other public places like to show CNN.
22044 on December 27, 2012 at 1:35 PM
Perhaps on the same grounds George Joseph Smith was hanged in 1914: for lowering the tone of the entire human race.
PersonFromPorlock on December 27, 2012 at 1:42 PM
I see the petition to deport more a reaction/free speech counter to his 2nd Amendment screed.
That you can’t claim the 1st Amendment Right without recognizing the 2nd Amendment Right. And all it entails in terms of the armed citizen.
ProfShadow on December 27, 2012 at 1:44 PM
Socons are such dupes. After CNN renews Morgan’s show he can thank them.
Moesart on December 27, 2012 at 1:45 PM
True. The chances of reducing the size of government, and numerous other things, are similarly unlikely. That doesn’t alter my opinion.
Fenris on December 27, 2012 at 1:56 PM
I don’t think we really have a case to deport Morgan unless we can catch him actually breaking the law. But remember, we have Mark Steyn, a brilliant conservative voice in our nation, who appears regularly on Fox News, Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity and The Hugh Hewitt show and is a Canadian citizen.
