Scientists report faster warming in Antarctica
Of course, warming in Antarctica is a relative concept. West Antarctica remains an exceedingly cold place, with average annual temperatures in the center of the ice sheet that are nearly 50 degrees Fahrenheit below freezing.
But the temperature there does sometimes rise above freezing in the summer, and the new research raises the possibility that it might begin to happen more often, potentially weakening the ice sheet through surface melting. The ice sheet is already under attack at the edges by warmer ocean water, and scientists are on alert for any new threat.
A potential collapse of the West Antarctic ice sheet is one of the long-term hazards that have led experts to worry about global warming. The base of the ice sheet sits below sea level, in a configuration that makes it especially vulnerable. Scientists say a breakup of the ice sheet, over a period that would presumably last at least several hundred years, could raise global sea levels by 10 feet, possibly more.

Merry Christmas to you too!

Uhm, better look more carefully:

Sea level rise 10 feet over several hundred years? Damn scientists can not even project the weather for next week.

Scientists report Newtown and Webster massacres due to global warming.

Awesome. Santa needs a summer vacation spot.

The warming of Antarctica is measured by the amount of sweat on Al Gore’s big, fat, commie forehead – obviously, he is sweating like a pig again.

Weather is not the same as climate. Do you want to insult an atmospheric physicist? Call him a weatherman.
HeIsSailing on December 24, 2012 at 9:47 PM
None of that was in the article I read.

Right, you have to follow the links in that article to other articles and papers and dig it out because what they are spoon feeding you at the NYT is only part of the truth. It’s all in there, you just have to follow the links they give you.

The other way around. It is insulting to weathermen to have global warming advocates called weathermen.
astonerii on December 24, 2012 at 10:18 PM
Even so, the article does not address the issue of no warming for the past 15 years. It says:
So, in other words, nothing. It says “West Antarctica peninsula might have warmed in the 1980s if we did our analysis correctly and if our understanding of the ‘software error’ is correct.” But it does not say that anything is CURRENTLY happening there.

So what you are saying is that an atmospheric physicist is not qualified to predict weather patterns?
From Wikipedia..
“Atmospheric sciences is an umbrella term for the study of the atmosphere, its processes, the effects other systems have on the atmosphere, and the effects of the atmosphere on these other systems. Meteorology includes atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics with a major focus on weather forecasting.”
Sounds like a weatherman to me.

Huh. If the Antarctic is warming, why has the sea ice extent in the Antarctic been at record highs for several years? For that matter, why has the global sea ice extent not varied in an statistically significant way for as long as man has been able to measure it?
If “faster warming” means more sea ice, will a new ice age melt the record-breaking sea ice around Antarctica? I’m confused.

The self-styled climate scientists have done a very poor job of predicting climate so far. James Hansen’s scaremongering predictions in the 80s comes to mind.

So…Global Warming…er…had there been any, would explain the catastrophic break-up of the Antarctic ice sheet…er…had that occurred. Got it.

And they say those who believe in Santa Claus are bad.
I’d laugh, but it other people’s money they’re wasting, a lot of it being taxpayers. They better start showing some spin off benefits for society from their work, like Tang or something, or the hammer is going to come down hard soon.
