Is putting a cop in every school feasible?
“In reality, we just can’t afford it,” said Hayduca, who is police chief in South Brunswick. “There’s a 2 percent cap levy on property tax increases in any given year in any given town, so I don’t know where the money would come from.
“We have 11 schools in South Brunswick. I would have to hire 10 officers at a total cost of more than $1 million to put a cop in every school. It’s just not realistic. I mean, the concept is great, but financially, you can’t do it.”
John Shane, professor of criminal justice at New York City’s John Jay College, said the measure might provide peace of mind but it would require study to determine whether or not it actually enhanced safety.

The question isn’t whether its feasible, the question is whether it is an effective use of resources.
Shocking concept for government types.

Yeah, I want to see a detailed break down of those costs.

Even while media leftists are calling this a crazy idea, other leftists, such as MoveOn-org, have been pushing it.
From the Fox article above:

Not as feasible as letting qualified teachers and staff be armed.
cozmo on December 23, 2012 at 8:14 PM
I think most states have programs for auxiliary police officers or deputies that could be modified to include school personnel. They after all have already gone thru a through background check.
meci on December 23, 2012 at 8:14 PM
In lefty lingo, feasibility was the precursor to sustainability. As used in popular speech, both are mush-headed ill-defined terms signifying nothing more than than the speaker’s political alignment.
petefrt on December 23, 2012 at 8:21 PM
Conservatives support an armed government agent in every school. Weird times.
lostmotherland on December 23, 2012 at 8:28 PM
The money we will have to pay out in lawsuits because we didn’t provide adequate security will be far less than what it’ll cost to hire an ex-cop.–Genius leftie working it out entirely in his head without the aid of paper and pencil.

That’s my preferred approach, too. Concealed carry in plain clothes, so that criminals don’t know who has the guns and can’t target them first. Let them be trained by police and receive extra duty pay.
I think it would work in all but the bluest areas. Let the states and school districts decide. If they prefer to bear the extra cost of police officers, or leave their children vulnerable, so be it.

The town could provide pistols, concealed carry holsters, ammunition (including practice) and advanced training for every single teacher and administrator for less than $100K – bet you dollars to donuts.
And it won’t cost very much to have signs made for all entrances that say:
“Every teacher and administrator in this building is armed against any and all threats of deadly force – enter at your own risk… And be especially careful around the lunch ladies. They’ve been killing for generations.”
turfmann on December 23, 2012 at 8:36 PM
Free training, certification and maybe a few other small perks.
I don’t want it to be about the money.

Removing the “gun free zone” signs from schools and passing CCW in a state costs comparatively nothing and puts considerable doubt in the mind of any would be copycat.
Changing how media covers these events would be the most effective course conceivable.
So how bout it media? Whad’ya say we “edit” the 1st amendment instead of the 2nd?
/
Once the “editing” starts where does it stop?
CCW is the solution.
eyesky on December 23, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Sure its feasible.
Deputize the teachers.
Problem solved.
ajacksonian on December 23, 2012 at 8:45 PM
Gun manufacturers, ammo manufacturers, ranges, instructors and countless other vendors would be competing to offer supplies and services for free.
cozmo on December 23, 2012 at 8:50 PM
Privatize the whole damn system.
CurtZHP on December 23, 2012 at 9:22 PM
It’s not about the money and it’s not about the guns.
Never was, never will be.
CorporatePiggy on December 23, 2012 at 9:23 PM
Offer a lib teacher more money and it will be. Along with all the horror scenarios the people against arming the teachers are inventing.
cozmo on December 23, 2012 at 9:31 PM
Granted, but it’s a 10th ammendment issue.
In Texas a small bill will allow teachers with a CHL to carry and indemnify them along Castle Doctrine lines. That could be passed very quickly whilst the bigger plan is formulated.
CorporatePiggy on December 23, 2012 at 9:39 PM
Dude, read what I wrote. I am all for that.
I ain’t for extra pay to have a teacher carry a gun. It would attract the wrong kind of attitude. Like the TSA people who leave their guns in toilets.
cozmo on December 23, 2012 at 9:45 PM
Agree.

(Democrat) pResident Bill Clinton, after the (at the time) worst ever school shooting at Columbine (funny how these worst-ever shootings happen when Dems are in charge!), endorsed the same very thing.
Speaking of “very”, you’re not very good at this. But have a very Merry CHRISTmas, and I hope you find your lost Mother soon. And where she came from.
Turn north at Seoul, perhaps?

I think the retired police who put in a ton of overtime and got promotions the year before they retired in order to cushion their pensions should volunteer. Some of them retire at 90% pay at the age of 50 or 55 with Cadillac health plans paid for by the rest of us. They could redeem themselves by volunteering at the schools.

Only the political and liberal journalist elite like David Gregory will be allowed to have armed guards protecting their precious children. The rest of you rubes will need to pay off gang bangers, although contraception and abortions will be free.
