I don’t see Ryan as a national figure. He was weak sauce during this last election.

No. While he was “fearless” in talking about SS and entitlements, his plan was nothing less than a leisurely drive off a sloping cliff. 40 freaking years? You’re counting on two generations of voters and a bunch of incumbent politicians to hold a steady course. Phooey. Rand had a better more realistic 5 year plan in a rational world. Besides, for all his wonkishness, Ryan was wrong in supporting many a thing, ie tarp, bailouts etc.

No. Ryan is playing this pretty well. He is a savvy Washington operator.

1. Boehner gets any public blame for this because Ryan has gone radio silent although it is clear he is working behind the scenes. His fingerprints were all over the Bowles letter.

2. It is clear that he is extracting favors from Boehner in exchange for his support.

3. Which candidate is going to attack him on this? Obama’s bff Christie? Jeb Bush? Rubio?

He was probably the only person in the House who could have stood up to Boehner and if not challenged him for the Speakership, articulated why ANY tax increases on ANYONE would be disastrous for the nation and for the GOP.

He sorely disappointed me.

Ryan will be the next Speaker of the House I think. He’ll be great with a Republican president, hopefully in 4 years.
