It’s time for gun owners to be good sports about gun control
All this is old hat, so there is no sense struggling with what exactly James Madison had in mind about the militia when he and his otherwise succinct brethren were marking up the Bill of Rights. Nor do we need to hear how no laws can stop crazy people from getting guns so what’s the point of gun laws in our nation or laws for everything else? And how guns don’t kill people, and so on and so forth.
Rather, it’s just obvious that we Americans possess too many firearms — almost 90 per 100 people, far more than anybody else in the whole world. And obviously it’s too easy for us to obtain these automatic weapons of human destruction — this should also be obvious by now — and that nothing will change unless the very people who are gun owners themselves support the changes the president swears to promote. Hunters are good citizens who want guns to shoot game. Nobody can accuse them of supporting the confiscation of guns.
If the sportsmen would let their voices of conscience be heard above the homicidal fusillade, then some sensible prohibitions could be enacted, for those who have the potential to reduce the gun carnage in the United States of America are precisely the people who own guns and who are good sports.

What part of infringement do you not understand, tool?

One thing as a landowner & rancher I have learned, never ever let the government through your door on purpose.
Badger40 on December 19, 2012 at 9:49 PM
KMA!
How about controlling yourself?
upinak on December 19, 2012 at 9:50 PM
Eh, when talking about the 2nd amendment you should never utter the word “sportsmen”.
ninjapirate on December 19, 2012 at 9:50 PM
Suck it. I’m not giving an inch of my constitutional rights. I don’t care if its the 4th, 1st or 2nd amendment. You aren’t going to take our ability to defend ourselves against an oppressive government.
MoreLiberty on December 19, 2012 at 9:50 PM
I wonder what would happen if one day, someone knocked on their door and said that they were there from the government and wanted their “valuables”?
It has happened before, it will happen again.
upinak on December 19, 2012 at 9:51 PM
You first. Put a sign in your front yard that says “No guns.”
I’ll check back in six months.
LincolntheHun on December 19, 2012 at 9:52 PM
Divide and conquer tactic.
Hunters know full well how libs operate, they won’t be fooled by the worn out tactics of incrementally limiting freedoms, liberties, and rights.
antipc on December 19, 2012 at 9:52 PM
Frank Deford, stick to sports commentary.
Yes, & the RG3 critic, too.
itsnotaboutme on December 19, 2012 at 9:53 PM
How does this lie at the feet of sportsmen…?
NeoKong on December 19, 2012 at 9:53 PM
Said by a dude who probably thinks barrel shrouds are “those shoulder things that go up”.
Ever try to get an actual automatic weapon, I have and it sucked. By the time the ATF got done giving me the anal probe and telling me exactly how they could kick down my door at any time, I said forget it.
Bishop on December 19, 2012 at 9:53 PM
It’s time for gun control fanatics to leave us alone. There are thousands of gun laws and not one stopped what just happened.
Liberals … they always want to take your liberties and rights and impose their version of “liberty”.
darwin on December 19, 2012 at 9:54 PM
The second amendment has nothing to do with hunting and sportsmen.
Shump on December 19, 2012 at 9:56 PM
Yeah, and based on that fact alone we have a remarkably LOW gun homicide rate.
darwin on December 19, 2012 at 9:57 PM
Liberals are quite ignorant of many things yet think they know everything.
darwin on December 19, 2012 at 9:58 PM
This was so full of fail I don’t even want to comment on it.
John the Libertarian on December 19, 2012 at 10:04 PM
I’ll tell you what Frank, let’s make a deal, I’ll give up my second amendment rights if you give up your first amendment rights. What do you say? I mean, ’cause those first amendment arguments are so old hat, you know about yelling “fire” in a theater and all that jive.
Dongemaharu on December 19, 2012 at 10:05 PM
BTW, I’m not a 2nd amendment absolutionist…
I honestly think there is room for compromise here… cities should be able to declare themselves gun free zones where they can lay heavy fines against people who bring a gun into the city… but then the city should be held civilly liable for every gun crime in the city that occurs.
If the state wants a monopoly on violence to guarantee safety then it must pay up when it doesn’t keep things safe.
ninjapirate on December 19, 2012 at 10:05 PM
The above proposal would probably require a constitional amendment…
ninjapirate on December 19, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Ain’t it the truth. Go to a center of ‘higher education’ and you’ll easily find ones that have deemed themselves wiser than God.
And that’s just the easiest example of their mentality. Also popular is railing at the God they treat with less respect than a stray cat to come and save them and their children when the sh!t hits the fan. If He finally got fed up with the Israelites, I can assure you we won’t fare any better!
MelonCollie on December 19, 2012 at 10:06 PM
Let’s try an alternate version of this story. How about if the headline were:
It’s time for abortion rights supporters to be good sports about limiting abortion
And what if the article said some things like:
Rather, it’s obvious that we Americans have just too many abortions — almost 1.5 million per year. And obviously it’s too easy for us to obtain these abortions — this should also be obvious by now — and that nothing will change unless the very people who are feminists themselves support the changes the National Right to Life promotes.
How would that work?
Shump on December 19, 2012 at 10:07 PM
Bite me.
davidk on December 19, 2012 at 10:07 PM
I am with you 110% of the way. There are only two real ways to prevent gun crime: give everyone but felons and nutcases guns, or keep enough trained professionals ready and give them the teeth they need to do their job.
Liberals are trying for the latter with their same-old hankerchief-stomping care for the rights of scum. And guess what? It ain’t working!
MelonCollie on December 19, 2012 at 10:08 PM
Yeah, about that. How many hunters use this incredible automatic war machine of destruction, the Remington 7400, which was in production for almost 25 years.

Detachable magazine: Check.
Semi auto: Check.
Black in color: Check.
All the attributes that the banners want to see gone. Hunters might have something to say about it, you dope.

I don’t have any automatic weapons. Honest.
And I don’t really feel very “sportsman” like against communist.
These people are seriously asking for major trouble. As God is my witness, you aren’t getting ANYTHING I own that I think I need to survive in your effed up liberal/progressive/commie nightmare. I bought what I did BECAUSE OF YOU. I would have been happy with hunting rifles, but YOU exist. You know why I bought all those 30 rounders over the last 4 years, and I know why you want to take them away.
End the farce, the pretzel twisted arguments. I ain’t buying any of it. Ever. You want to take them? Have the balls enough to come take them by the brute force it will take. Quit trying to mind-eff us. It won’t work.
wolly4321 on December 19, 2012 at 10:10 PM
Ask the UK, the came for handguns first, then “assault rifles” then the guns hunters use.
MoreLiberty on December 19, 2012 at 10:13 PM
Now is exactly the time to fight. Because: a) The things you want won’t solve the problem, b) when another event proves they didn’t solve the problem, you’ll be back for more “compromise”, and c) the unintended consequences of your “solutions” will be to push the balance of power between criminals and victims in the direction of the criminals, making things even worse.

clippermiami on December 19, 2012 at 10:18 PM
I’d really like to know how these people who want these firearm bans think this government can find who owns them when they can’t even find out which of their own employees thought selling assault weapons to Mexican drug cartels was a swell idea.
Socratease on December 19, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Bingo.

If that doesn’t work, try selling bacon door to door in Dearborn Michigan.
tom daschle concerned on December 19, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Honestly, when did sports journalists became such effete d0uchenozzles?
Everyone should be aware that he is using one of the gun grabber wedge techniques: split off the hunters from the 2A people. Of course the groups have huge overlap, and we need to stick together in this.
All these lefties saying they respect hunter’s rights are lying. They think hunters are murderous redneck knuckle draggers, but potentially useful tools.
juliesa on December 19, 2012 at 10:29 PM
How come mentally ill people aren’t called to be good sports about committing themselves? Or Hollywood and video game companies to be good sports about changing what they produce?
It’s always our fault.
WisCon on December 19, 2012 at 10:29 PM
He lost me with all of the appeals to common sense and his claims that something was obvious (when the very existence of widespread debate on the topic negates that claim).
If it is obvious that Americans own (on average) too many guns, it should be an easy argument to make.
I didn’t see him make any attempts at demonstrating what the right number of firearms would be. His 90 per 100 people thing is silly. For instance, lets say that for some reason we all thought it over and decided 1 gun was the right number of guns to own. If every one then went out and got 1 gun we’d have 100 guns per 100 people (even more guns!!!!).
JadeNYU on December 19, 2012 at 10:30 PM
No, it’s not “obvious that Americans possess too many firearms”, 10 people out of 100 doesn’t have one. And No, it not obvious that it is easy to obtain an automatic weapon. In fact, it is every difficult to get one. This idiot should know what he is talking about before he tries to lecture anyone about guns.
Dollayo on December 19, 2012 at 10:32 PM
10 million deer hunters hit the fields every fall, how many of them are carrying guns that would be banned under the new and improved bill coming next year.
Bishop on December 19, 2012 at 10:33 PM
It’s awfully hard for me to buy the line that either Hollywood or Silicon Valley has produced anything remotely connected or responsible for mass shootings. But I do hold the media responsible for glorifying the killers. They should stop publishing the killer’s name and likeness.
John the Libertarian on December 19, 2012 at 10:35 PM
Taxes.
Badger40 on December 19, 2012 at 10:57 PM
Be good sports? Then why doesn’t he just suggest they all shoot themselves bcuz giving up their guns may be the equivalent.
stukinIL4now on December 19, 2012 at 11:08 PM
The number of guns and the kind of guns Americans own is irrelevant. The hunting excuse is BS.
It’s about tyranny and I’m sick of all the ridiculous analysis of our rights.
Nut jobs drive cars and kill people everyday and you don’t hear people talking about outlawing cars. Pools kill more children than guns, knives, and cars and no one is talking about doing away with pools.
It’s about TYRANNY and until we have the balls to drive the T word home, this is going to get the best of us.
If the only thing we have left to guard our lives are revolvers and rifles… we as a disarmed people! Do not let the propaganda of the left confuse you into thinking that we can defend our lives against a government that is BETTER armed than its citizens!!
katy on December 19, 2012 at 11:08 PM
I’m guessing we should ask all those women having abortions to be good sports?
ButterflyDragon on December 19, 2012 at 11:10 PM
It’s time for the gun-grabbers to give the guns back to the school employees who need them, before more children are killed by their policies.
Dusty on December 19, 2012 at 11:14 PM
Regardless of whether they are at fault (probably not), they are never held under the same scrutiny that conservatives are.
WisCon on December 19, 2012 at 11:32 PM
Since the National Firearms Act of 1934, there have been tens of thousands of homicides in the United States, but exactly TWO of them were committed with automatic weapons.
What should be obvious by now is that you don’t know jackshyt.
Resist We Much on December 19, 2012 at 11:44 PM
Gotta love how in the very first paragraph he says there’s no need to talk about the things he doesn’t want to talk about, i believe that’s called dishonestly framing the debate.
