Fierce debate after Newtown school shootings: Where was God?
Steve McSwain, a former Baptist minister who is now a nationally known interfaith activist, addressed Huckabee directly, writing:
“With such remarks, you not only show little regard for those broken by this tragedy, but you make God into some kind a cosmic psychopath — vengeful, sickeningly repulsive, one who takes out his madness on innocent little children.
“Your reasoning is repulsive: Because we have removed your god from our schools, this is how your god gets even?” he wrote.
The intensity of the rhetoric underscores how quickly discussions of the religious underpinnings of tragedy can turn heated. Little noticed among Huckabee’s critics is that he didn’t say God turned his back on Newtown; he expressly said God was there in the good works people were doing.

Oh look, first a Christian calls me a F@ggot and now one says I am going to be sodomized. Boy you guys are just great.
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:15 PM
Oh man, this thread is just bringing out all of the awesome Christians isn’t it.
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:16 PM
Thanks for that.
I don’t agree with your interpretation of the first post (it says “allow”, not “cause”).
As for the second, I disagree with MelonCollie, but as I understand there are verses supporting and refuting “sins of the fathers”. You did manage to push MelonCollie’s buttons pretty effectively to prompt that outburst.
malclave on December 19, 2012 at 10:16 PM
No he didn’t.
Listen, Melon says $hit I don’t agree with sometimes, but I do not think he thinks little kids deserve to die.
He’s saying that sin punishes the innocent & that the sins we engage in are responsible for their hurt.
Which if you understood human behavior you’d get that.
You do bad things, your family, kids, etc can suffer for that. Even a whole community.
He is not saying the kids deserved to die.
You’re an idiot.
And BTW-you sit here & insult the hell out of us who believe in God, take a damned look at yourself in the mirror you tool.
If you don’t believe in God, then WTF are you here wasting time insulting us?
Badger40 on December 19, 2012 at 10:17 PM
Your point is banal and overplayed.
God doesn’t interfere in human endeavors. He doesn’t stop the Holocaust, he doesn’t punish gays fro getting married, he doesn’t help your favorite team win the Super Bowl, and he doesn’t stop Adam Lanza with a magic bolt of lightning.
Good Solid B-Plus on December 19, 2012 at 10:17 PM
There is no buttons that could be pressed that would get me to say something like that. He seriously believes they had it coming because God was removed from school. You don’t just say something like that. . . .
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:18 PM
This Jew doesn’t care if you’re sexually attracted to men, he just thinks you’re an ***hole who is using the same overused atheist tropes and would be sorely outgunned in any actual theological debate, especially one that veers outside of mainstream Christianity, because that’s the only theology your talking points are equipped to handle.
Good Solid B-Plus on December 19, 2012 at 10:19 PM
Yeah well your outrage is noted. Ever think there are people here who just don’t want to get involved in a spat, or maybe read and interpret things differently? It’s not as if we’re all physically sitting around a table, there is only so much that can be communicated in a written comment section.
So I’ll tell you what, next time an atheist says something I think is outrageous here I will immediately excoriate the other atheists for not demanding his immediate termination as a commenter, you included.

holy confirmation bias
I’ve never seen you here so I take it you just want to be insufferable
22044 on December 19, 2012 at 10:20 PM
Don’t try to soften what he said. He said that the actions of the parents (removing God from school) brought retribution upon the families. Retribution is “Punishment that is considered to be morally right and fully deserved.”. Anyone who agrees with Meloncollie is a lunatic.
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:21 PM
Brought out all the awesome sodomites, didn’t it?

If I was reading a thread and commenting and an atheist said something profoundly stupid I would be the first one to call him out.
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:22 PM
Act like d-bags, you mean?
Looks like it.
Badger40 on December 19, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Yepper this agnostic agrees as well.
melle1228 on December 19, 2012 at 10:23 PM
Hey, what you do in your bedroom is none of my business. 2/3rds of your comments have included some mention of sodomy. Seems to be your thing.
thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Anyone who fails to deny any comment here at HotGas automatically agrees with the commenter.
Bishop on December 19, 2012 at 10:24 PM
Actually no he didn’t say that. In non-theological terms, he said people make choices, and sometimes those choice are visited on our children.
melle1228 on December 19, 2012 at 10:25 PM
The only regret on this thread is that some people take you seriously. Why are you obsessed with MelonCollie. He’s harmless. I guess you just hate Christians. Enjoy your life.
22044 on December 19, 2012 at 10:25 PM
Maybe not something precisely like that, but I’m sure you do have buttons… everyone does.
And I doubt any belief in the “sins of the fathers” in relation to Newtown is just because of the removal of God from the schools. But, like I said, I disagree with MC’s take on that, so I’m not really in a position to defend the argument.
malclave on December 19, 2012 at 10:25 PM
A particularly nasty thread.
Meanwhile, twenty kids are still dead – with no hope of retribution.

You mean something you “thought” was profoundly stupid.
As I said, these are written comments and often the intended meaning gets lost in how they are written.
I’m a perfect example; I take great pride in baiting the unwary with outrageous comments, but if you were sitting here with me it would never work because I can’t keep a straight face.
Bishop on December 19, 2012 at 10:26 PM

[thphilli on December 19, 2012 at 10:18 PM]
Maybe he does, maybe he doesn’t. What do you care, you don’t believe in God. Why the heck are you even here in a thread discussing the subject of whether someone you don’t believe in did or did not intervene in a tragedy? You add nothing. All you do is subtract and distract from the discussion.
I can’t help but believe it’s to disparage and incite. You certainly aren’t here to learn anything about the subject.
Dusty on December 19, 2012 at 10:27 PM
It’s what I’ve been saying as well.
Fracking crickets from the atheist.
I don’t care if you’re religious or not.
Actions that we do have consequences for even innocent bystanders.
Fact.

tom daschle concerned on December 19, 2012 at 10:28 PM
Good to know.
Back on page 1, someone wrote that the “Christian argument” is that God is a spiteful teenager.
You going to call that poster out, or are you too profoundly stupid to recognize profoundly stupid?
malclave on December 19, 2012 at 10:30 PM
You got it.
He’s just grasping at Melon’s tirade & turning it into something it isn’t.
Badger40 on December 19, 2012 at 10:31 PM
How could you even discern a profoundly stupid statement from any pronouncement an atheist made? LMFAO.
tom daschle concerned on December 19, 2012 at 10:33 PM
So why are you here?
You don’t seem to care about the 2nd Amendment.
You don’t seem to care about the 1st Amendment, as long as the people being censored are religious.
Your technocrat centrist milquetoast messiah got his clock cleaned, even though we were assured he was the smartest guy in the room and would run a flawless campaign buttressed by that Death Star that never quite materialized.
What exactly keeps you here, Pablo? The fact that the Jerky Boys message board only gets one topic for decade?

God isn’t aborting the millions of babies America is aborting every year in this nation. Who is grieving for them? Where is God there?
No. It’s not the children’s fault. It’s not the unborn baby’s fault either, when their mothers have them aborted. It’s not the unborn baby’s fault when Obama tries to deny them medical care if they survive the abortion.
And it’s not God fault when the people of America reap on their children what they have sown. God did not create gun free zones! God did not kick himself out of the public school system! God did not screw up the mental health system in America!
Yeah.. blame God. It feels so much better than blaming ourselves for the mess we’ve created!
Oh.. you want God to show up? He will. In do time. And when he does a lot of us will pray he isn’t too just.
