Federal, state, and local officials can always do more to fund mental-health care programs in their communities, promote screening for mental illness in high schools, and encourage parents to be on the alert for violent tendencies in their children.

Funny, that only one thing in that sentence has anything to do with a real part of the solution: relationships. The reflexive answer is more government intrusion into our lives (funding for programs, screening of those within “the system”); heck, even the last one is oriented on the government telling parents what to do. Or, we can try to rebuild our communities, so that we can see these people and get them help or restraint before they totally go postal. It will entail us actually changing our lives and communities, however, so many will turn to government to solve it instead.

And, yes, only returning to the concept of Natural Law (at a minimum) will really make any difference.
