Barbara Boxer: How about boosting school security with National Guard troops?
SOS “would expand a successful National Guard program in place since 1989 that allows governors to use the guard to assist with law enforcement efforts related to drug interdiction and counter-drug activities. So we take a successful program, and we say we’re gonna add a new purpose, and that’s what we do in our legislation,” she said.
“National Guard troops could be used to support local law enforcement agencies in protecting our children at schools. This could take the form of additional guards at school as well as capital improvements such as strengthening the perimeters of the school and safety procedures,” Boxer added.

How would that help in these gun free zones?

What we need is a Civilian National Security Force run by Boxer under Dear Leader’s supervision…
d1carter on December 19, 2012 at 3:33 PM
Would these National Guard troops be able to carry guns? If not, then what’s the point?
supernova on December 19, 2012 at 3:35 PM
With the large number of schools, that would take a huge amount of National Guardsmen. Considering they are part-timers (one weekend a month), I don’t think this is plausible.
Bitter Clinger on December 19, 2012 at 3:35 PM
Ohio state part deux?
Or Little Rock?
Third time the charm?
Another excellent idea…
cozmo on December 19, 2012 at 3:36 PM
Yeah, because the National Guard has nothing else to do when they’re not in A-stan.

Doesn’t Posse Comitatus forbid the use of the military for law enforcement purposes unless martial law is declared?
Mitoch55 on December 19, 2012 at 3:42 PM
More stupidity from the left.
There are 100,000 (round numbers) of public schools in the US.
There is about 467,000 national guard members. The size varys by state, is California going to send guard members to Arizona? Even if you could work it out perfectly. That’s 4 per school, provided you mobilize the entire National Guard, no one ever goes to a school, or retires, or finishes up their enlistment or gets sick.
.
Yet another idea that sounded good in her head…

So, let me get this straight…
Violent video games may numb our children to violence, but sending them daily to an armed military encampment won’t?
The “logic” boggles the mind.
gravityman on December 19, 2012 at 3:48 PM
Would you put that past Obama?
gravityman on December 19, 2012 at 3:50 PM
Actually, my first thought was that it would be a real change of pace for Democrats to be sending troops to protect children. The other times it happened was when a Republican President was protecting black kids from a Democrat governor too racist to let them in the public school.
txhsmom on December 19, 2012 at 3:51 PM
What an idiotic idea from a registered idiot. How about a sign that says “Staff armed and trained to use deadly force” think some nut job might think twice before entering? Of course you would need somebody on the inside that is armed and trained…
major dad on December 19, 2012 at 3:51 PM
Governors have a little more leeway in this regard, but this is a dumb arse idea regardless. People can defend themselves if they are allowed to do so. Barbara Smellybox is admitting the obvious with this idea, but she can’t bring herself to promote more freedom for citizens as a solution. Instead we get the promotion of a police state.
NotCoach on December 19, 2012 at 3:54 PM
Its one of those things that is nice on the surface, but for what purpose?
The other times I mentioned, there were known threats. This would be for an unknown threat for an unknown duration. Sure, they would start the call-up with citizen soldiers who were already cops, but that would take cops off the street, put them in a different uniform and put them in a single school.
Just add elementary schools to the list of schools with ROTC programs. Let the ROTC leader carry, along with other qualified teachers and staff, problem taken care of.
Much easier than any of the democrat proposals.
cozmo on December 19, 2012 at 3:56 PM
I’m ok with this. Doesn’t have to be someone in full on body armor with a machine gun.
Could just be a national guardsman in plain clothes with a concealed weapon. Assigned to a school a few days each year.
commodore on December 19, 2012 at 3:57 PM
Well, it’s not as if anyone’s ever accused Barbara “call me Senator” Boxer of being smart or anything. Give her a break. She’s living up to expectations.
RadClown on December 19, 2012 at 3:59 PM
Yes. Yes. But, let me just have a moment to enjoy the irony that a liberal democrat is proposing guns in school to protect children. This must be a first.
txhsmom on December 19, 2012 at 4:02 PM
OK, why not qualified teachers and administrators who are there everyday? Why do we need this extra layer of government bureaucracy to accomplish the same thing?
NotCoach on December 19, 2012 at 4:02 PM
What’s the point? Anybody who is going to target a school will know they aren’t likely to be there, so it’s largely meaningless. Why not arm those who actually will be present when a potential incident might occur?
sharrukin on December 19, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Why stop there? The overwhelming number of violent crimes are not committed in schools..if fact it is quite a rarity.
Why not just have the NG wander the streets to keep an eye on things?
A tank or two driving around wouldn’t hurt either. Aw heII, why not just get the full force of the military to go door to door and kinda look around to evaluate what kind of stuff people are into? What could go wrong? Do it for the children.
It wouldn’t have to be permanent….just long enough to get a handle on the “gun problem”.
Mimzey on December 19, 2012 at 4:02 PM
Oh I’m all for that, but someone with military training whose only job is to be vigilant would help as well.
When I said a few days a year, I meant that particular guardsmen having that particular duty.
There would always be someone rotating in to provide coverage.
But local law enforcement would probably be a better option for this.
commodore on December 19, 2012 at 4:11 PM
Why pay for them? Why not ask retired military and law enforcement to do it? I’m certain they can find enough of those in each school district that they could rotate in 1 day per week or less. And be happy to do it.
JeffWeimer on December 19, 2012 at 4:11 PM
She obviously does not undertand it, but she pretty much is admitting that guns are not the problem.
If we have to take such drastic measures to protect our schools from “bad” people, we have a serious problem with “bad” people.
Jabberwock on December 19, 2012 at 4:17 PM
There are about 125,000 schools in the US.
The National Guard would cease to exist if tasked with this. They simply don’t have the numbers required. The police don’t either.
sharrukin on December 19, 2012 at 4:17 PM
This works and its by far the simplest and cheapest solution.

Because those efforts are working so well.
Lost in Jersey on December 19, 2012 at 4:23 PM
Doesn’t apply to state militia or national guard under the control of a state Governor.
As to Boxers’ proposal….the folks in the Guard have jobs right now in the civilian sector. She’s an idiot.
The solution is simple. Let’s let Uncle Joe figure it out.
BobMbx on December 19, 2012 at 4:28 PM
Slo-uncle Joe ain’t ever gonna’ figure it out.
cozmo on December 19, 2012 at 4:30 PM
I know…I know!!…how about not overreacting to a horrible and violent anomaly by trying to figure out a way to stop something that is impossible to stop?
I would like to think that liberal insanity is not impossible to stop, but on the one hand, you have one single nutcase kill 27 people and the reaction is to strip everyone of their gun rights…and on the other hand you have a group of people who’s whole point of existence being to kill or convert everyone to their way of thinking. Those people have killed thousands, just in this country alone, but the liberal outrage level doesn’t even exist. In fact, you can’t even point out the violent and horrible acts this group of people perpetrate on the world at large without the liberals accusing you of being a bigot or a racist.
When this level of cognitive dissonance is accepted norm, I have little belief that insanity can be cured, it can only be fought.
Mimzey on December 19, 2012 at 4:32 PM
First question I’d ask as a reporter:
In the war zones in Iraq and Afghanistan, no effort was made nor policy contemplated for dis-arming the citizenry of what really are assault weapons (AK-47s, RPGs, etc..). Many of our finest children were killed with those weapons.
How does one square implementing private gun control laws inside the United States, but not in a combat zone?
Essentially, the US Government is now deciding how to disarm US citizens after determining that your average Iraqi and Afghani citizens are capable of owning their own weapons.
FU, Washington.

Further proof the ruling class believes they should live by a different set of rules. How about you back the fluke off Babs and allow the 2nd Amendment to do what it was designed to do.
jawkneemusic on December 19, 2012 at 5:08 PM
Well, an interim step would be to allow any teachers or other school staff who are also in the Guard to carry weapons on campus… right?
malclave on December 19, 2012 at 6:06 PM
LOL! Obviously the numbers don’t work but still I support this plan by Boxer, not only can they protect the schools they can teach the children about freedom, serving ones country and patriotism. A great recruitment tool….
That should make all the leftest teachers there nervous.
