After Newtown, four ways the NRA could change
1. Institutions can change. The NRA has become an implacable foe of gun control but that doesn’t mean it will always be. There could be glasnost in the NRA Kremlin, a recognition that the world has changed. It’s not a perfect analogy by any means but auto companies opposed seat belts and then accepted them as standard equipment. They fought air bags and then accepted them.
2. Hunters might triumph over the automatic crowd. At some point, it’s possible that hunters will feel less threatened by the spectre of gun control laws and be willing to assert themselves more. Of course, hunters are no more monolithic than “drivers” or “students” but they may not see themselves as having a vested interest in enormous magazines.

Why does the NRA need to change at all?
Steven Den Beste on December 18, 2012 at 10:34 AM
O_o
The 2nd Amendment has nothing to do with hunting. It has everything to do with keeping tyrants at bay.
darwin on December 18, 2012 at 10:34 AM
Propaganda at it’s finest. What’s sad is many hunters are falling for it. If they want to bring out the soviet analogies, I’m sure I can find some that will fit to the left and gun control like peas in a pod.

Couldn’t help it. I clicked. Divide and conquer I guess.
hawkdriver on December 18, 2012 at 10:38 AM
The NRA is running and hiding at the moment. They should be speaking out and pointing out that more gun control laws would not have stopped this shooting.
Instead the NRA took down its Facebook page and refuses to respond to any questions.
AngusMc on December 18, 2012 at 10:39 AM
I’m still somewhat undecided on this issue, overall, but I must say that analogy is pretty dumb. Auto companies opposed those things because they reduced their profits. The NRA opposes gun control because possession of firearms is a basic Bill of Rights tenet!
KS Rex on December 18, 2012 at 10:40 AM
Why has the NRA been so silent. You’d think if they felt they were on the right side of this issue they’d be all over the airwaves and blogosphere, trumpeting their armed and ready fantasies. But not a peep out them since before Newtown. I wonder why?
lostmotherland on December 18, 2012 at 10:41 AM
Oh for pete’s sake don’t do a darn thing. The attention span in this country is about five seconds. Do nothing and they’ll move on to something else soon enough.

Because we’re not bloodthirsty vultures feasting on the corpses of innocents for political gain.

Why aren’t you silent? You could see leftists twitching the second this happened. They couldn’t wait to start the “Let’s ban guns” hoopla. They, and you don’t give a crap about anything but taking away rights from average people.
darwin on December 18, 2012 at 10:49 AM
Maybe it’s the constant stream of death threats they have been receiving from liberals and gun-banners who are outraged about the…uh…violence and….uh…deaths…at Sandy Hook.
Bishop on December 18, 2012 at 10:49 AM
when the going gets tough, the nra goes hiding. figures – the idea that guns make you a man was always ridiculous.

When will the gay community step forward to take responsibility for Penn State? Why are they silent?
Bishop on December 18, 2012 at 10:51 AM
Oh, they’re as silent as the grave about Dr. Kermit Gosnell. After all, he didn’t need guns to kill children.

And the car companies caving in on mandatory seat belts was a good thing?
COMMIT RIGHTWING CIVIL DISOBEDIENCE!!
Cops can’t see inside your vehicle at night. Almost impossible for them to detect an individual not wearing their seat belt. Unbuckle when the sun goes down, just to thumb your nose at the liberal nanny-state!!
ericdondero on December 18, 2012 at 10:53 AM
What exactly has changed? Have all the tyrants and criminals disappeared? Or is it just your opinion that the position of U.N. thugs and American fascists should carry the day?
Most hunters also own guns for self-defense and carry them as well. But keep thinking they’re one monolithic group and try to divide and conquer the way the left does with everyone else.
What the hell is a gun of mass destruction? One that fires more than one shot in five minutes?
We’ve already had those phony “moderate” gun rights groups and they’ve failed. People don’t like being lied to. Try again.

Idiots. We have a 2nd Amendment – not for hunting, sport shooting or collecting – but for a right and just citizenry can defend themselves against a government that has grown oppressive and tyrannical.
Human beings, regardless of what laws passed by silly little power hungry men say, have an absolute right to protect themselves. I have a right to my life, and my property and no other person has the right to deny me that life and if I decide to defend myself I am just in the eyes of nature or god. A woman being raped has a right to defend herself, a home owner whose home is invaded has a right to defend themselves, and elderly man under attack from young thugs have a right to defend themselves, an African-American under attack from lynching racist thugs have a right to defend themselves. A citizenry oppressed by an over bearing and tyrannical government has every right – if not a duty – to defend themselves and their liberty.

Sorry, doesn’t work that way. The homosexual community needs to come forward and take responsibility for the human weapons of mass destruction in their ranks. No more Penn States!
Some legislation will be required, how about we institute a nationwide “Assault Gays” ban; no more assault gays.
Bishop on December 18, 2012 at 11:02 AM
Well, actually they’re not. But let me ask you, bigot. Why did Planned Parenthood keep a low profile during the Kermit Gosnell story.

The irony. The left really has no concept of it.

The NRA knows that they MUST NOT change, if they want to survive. NRA members will not stand for any weakening, any erosion – the NRA must continue to fight to protect our constitutionally guaranteed right to bear arms. Absolutely nothing has changed in the ‘gun control’ debate; Liberals want exactly what they have always wanted, which is to destroy the NRA and push for a complete ban on the sale of all firearms and ammunition – they want to eliminate the 2nd amendment.
The liberal fantasy of a total gun ban will never go away, and, as we see, they don’t care who they use or destroy to achieve their goal. obama and his liberals are using the tragic deaths of 26 children and adults to pump new life into their moribund ‘gun control’ agenda – and, in so doing, they are taking vital focus and resources away from examining the real causes of this tragedy.

ebrown2 on December 18, 2012 at 11:08 AM
Easy. It is and will always be a 100% no win deal for them. It doesn’t matter what they say. It doesn’t matter what they do. The liberals hate them and for liberals it’s all about hate. They live for it and live to point it out no matter what is said or done. Total destruction of their “enemy” will not make a liberal happy. They will just find something else to hate.
Frank Enstine on December 18, 2012 at 11:10 AM
the logical counterpart to a gun ban would be a ban on sex but your insecurity-rooted homophobia got the better of you.

Great point. Especially considering that the Supreme Court has held (2005) that law enforcement is not constitutionally obligated to protect you.

Why can’t you answer those questions?
Is the 2nd amendment and the rest of the Constitution meant to be a constraint on government?
Galt2009 on December 18, 2012 at 11:28 AM
Ruby Ridge

Fantasy?
the_nile on December 18, 2012 at 11:29 AM
You mean like Ruby Ridge were the federal agents murdered Vickie and Sammie Weaver by using unconstitutional ROEs, not identifying themselves as federal agents, and had no warrants. The government, a jury and Senate Sub-committee openly acknowledged it after the fact. The family was even awarded a settlement after the government lost their case. So in case you are unaware, the 2nd Amendment was passed so that a just citizenry could defend themselves against an oppressive government.
MoreLiberty on December 18, 2012 at 11:31 AM
there’s no reason why we couldn’t ban everything except low-caliber handguns and hunting rifles. i also see no legal issue with taxing and regulating the hell out of ammo. then you can bear .20 pellet gun and punitively taxed ammo all you want, be my guest.
sesquipedalian on December 18, 2012 at 11:31 AM
Yep – just as they do after EVERY mass shooting – because people know that guns is the best protection.
Mass shooting and a push for stricter gun control always increase gun and ammo sales.
